and guys have been pre paring for the formal all week by bringing in food for the buffet and getting decorations ready for the gym saturday win be a busy day for miss atkey and the gaa as the gym will be completely redone with fred barens track team doe to bad weather conditions the acton high school trackteam bad to practice indoors in other words they completed twenty- five laps around the school cor ridors this worked quite well and i am presuming that the members of our track team thought that this was quite tne- flclal our best prospect now is jim slaven who is running a number of good races a number of other members are also showing good capabilities soccer team as i mentioned in my last art icle acton needed a more de voted team in this last game with erin the acton players showed more desire to win how ever they were unable to cope with the erin team erin won by a score of 2 to 0 the margin in goal score would have been greater hot two of tbe goals scored were off side acton high school cross country team topped a successful season by winning two titles in the cwossa cross co championships far hatch because of tbe large number ofgirls simptebont hatch was prepared and was ser ved la shifts one half of the girls ate while the others attend ed the workshop in the gym and vice versa the girls were all required to try new cheers while lana demonstrated them some of the steps were quite confus ing but most of the girls were able to catch on after the workshop everyone returned to the auditorium where cheerleading skits for pep rallies and different chants were demon strated booklets were on sale at the clinic with many cheers songs and skits in 1l after this session there was a competition between the 200 acaoola each team went out to the football field and divided into 10 section of 10 teams each the red and white girls were also bme from the cold as they only had their uniforms on each section was judged and the girls returned to the auditor ium the bast earn from each section did a cheer and were lodged from these 20 five war chosen best of the clinic the day proved very beneficial to the acton girls who have only oat year of experience behind them basketball season the basketball season will be yftt on the sixth of novem- bn good back to the teams is expressed by all the students who tally expect this years teams to do as well as last their division with the low score of u points this was the lowest score of any school at the meet jim slaven won the race with a time of 14455 for tbe three mile distance the fastest time of the day hot on his heels were bob andrews in third place mike cooper in fourth and bill field in sixth the senior team was not as fortunate as the others but made a credible showing by placing soap script transform school gym into swiss alps scene the girls athletic association of acton district high school has been working hard this week to transform the gymnasium into a swiss mountain scene for the edelweiss ball saturday what seems to be taking most of the time is the wall to wall mural showing villages nestled among the alps students have been painting at the school after classes and after supper working to make a complete transforma tion of the gym saturday morning at 7 am the students will raise the mural and put up other large decorations which cannot be done any other time because of commencement exercises friday night the mural shows little white churches and cottages brightly coloured chalets and tiny lakes here and there among the mount ains the alps are deep bine and have caps of snow on top blue curtains on windows and bme spotlights will further highlight the scene the gaa would like to make it known that the ball is open to all students of the school and any previous students yon may also bring friends with you if in couples highlight of the ban win he the crowning of a queen nominations have been held and students will vote on thursday to name the top five girls those who attend the formal wiu vote again to deter mine who will be queen of the ball any girl whoisnominatedmust attend and be willing to take part in it third in the competition bob roughly ran sixth gary kelly fourteenth brent marshall sev enteenth and jake pasma nine teenth all boys who have represented acton this year in cross country are to be commended for their fine efforts out of a total of u traces acton has won seven and dropped only tour two of those being lost by lessthanfive points their success however has not been without hard work and sacrifice these boys have given their time to train onunuously tor two hours per day for five and in some cases six days a week for the past eight weeks they have attended 40 practice sess ions in all types of weather and have covered weu over 200 miles in running with one week left in the sea son the team is still busy pre paring for the ontario high school cross country championships to be held inhamiltonthissaturday acton has one of the finest cross country teams in the province and with a little luck and a lot of hard work they just might come home with a provincial title two wednesday calls for acton firefighters firefighters were called twice within a few hour span last wed- newday first alarm at 545 pm sent the acton brigade to ospringe where tbe barn of len buck on highway 24 was threatened then the acton brigade had to play se cond fiddle for erin firefighters who arrived first with a pair of trucks erin had the mate under cootro and were dismantling the barn where it was threatened remov ing mink pens and smoking bed ding about this time another pairof trucks arrived from the hiusburg department making the scene a miniature convention neighbors helped clean tbe barn of pens
