4 th acton free press wednesday november 8 1967 pressure from the nhl ex pansion wasputuponthecanadian v amateur hockey association last may in saskatoon when they pro posed an age change for players la the league vndertne new ruling commencing fohkr68 9 season age limits would be juvenile players born after dec 31 1950 midget born after dec 311952 bantam born after dec 31 1954 pee wee born after dec 311956 and novice born after dec 31 1958 the age limits presently adopted are five months later ttwn those suggested that being alay 31st of the following year a heated debate erupted bet ween the ouha and the ca ha at the annua omha con vention in toronto last saturday over the pros and voas of this over the pros and cons of this new ruling by the caha of the 635 delegates attending the affair it was reported that a good twothirds majority were against the cajla proposition the omha argued the cat back was far too severe in that it would drop nearly a whole year of hockey for some of the players next seasoni its plain to see what the nrlus backscratching will either force or faster that being an increase in the number of junior hockey clubs or in other words it ups a young players eligibility for the nhl uefs take for example the out come of the age change on a juvenile player next season the player who is eligible for his second year of juvenile hockey only if he was born in hay 31 of 1951 will under the new ruling will be dropped from minor hockey without having consumed an important if not necessary second year of juvenile training the only place a player has to go in a smaller town such as acton is to an intermediate league acton is only one of a number of smaller centres which has had to make a choice of sponsoring either an intermed iate squad or go junior either way one form of hockey will be absconded there was some talk last sea son of forming a jr club in acton and dropping out of the inter mediate circuit but acton at that time lacked a team for junior ranks during the heated debate at the convention gary mcleod om ha secretary said the dele gates had two options either abide by the new ruling or adopt their own age limit and withdraw from organized hockey the meeting finally passed a motion submitted by toe chatham assoc iation requesting the oha to seek revision of the caha ruling which would limit the age of juveniles to 19 midget 17 bantam 15 pee wee 13 and novice 11 on the first of january in the season in which to compete another point to ponder would be the money situation in the outcome of this debate six new team franchises were given to the americans and it appears from a distance that it will be them that will milk canada dry of a lot of good hockey material in the coming years if this ruling is past good players make good
