plugging the town it is entitled this is burlington a picture story of the total living environment of the town as seen through the eyes of its people first copies were distributed to members of council by j gordon blair dir ector of business development stockholders to consider owdgonotion proposal for acton limestone quarries i have just been reading this weeks copy of the acton free press and note with spme inter est the esqueslng council has authorised mr george herring- ton dog catcher to patrol glen williams two days a week for a trial period of six months at a stated cost to the ratepayers i hope they have given him more authority than he appears to have in this area when it comes to carrying out his work early this year i had occasion to call him myself while out for my regular morning walk with my own dog on a leash an other dog from this area attack ed him and before i could pre vent it bit his ear and caused him to have a very sore ear for some weeks this happened on this road not on private proper ty but when i called mr har rington he informed me that be has no authority to pick up a dog on private property now a dog is pretty smart and when he sees a stranger coming towards him either on foot or in a car he is not going to wait for him to catch him he immediately makes for the nearest hideout and it doesnt matter if it is bis own masters property or not so how on earth is the dog catcher going to pick up dogs which are straying around causing annoyance to peo ple and just what does he do for the payment he receives from various townships for patrolling their respective areas less than a month ago i had occasion to call him again this time i did it through mr mc- geachle a dog had attacked my small granddaughter who had just been put out to play in her own garden bit her on the chin and scratched her cheek this same dog was afterwards seen scrounging in garbage cans which had been put out for collection that day also later the same day outside the mz bennett public school vomiting at the side of the highway mr herrlngton eventually came to see me about 830 pm mat evening for details of this happening he again told me he had no authority to pick up a dog on private property what is the use of paying this man ratepay ers money if he lsntglven any authority to carry out the job he is supposed to do as you can probably gather from this letter i am a great dog lover but believe that they should be kept under control as my own dog is he is walked at least four times a day on his leash a proposed amalgamation agreement kindly lent us we used a picture and a writeup about the choir in our local paper prior to the appearance of the choir here in tlllsonburg you may already know that due to a breakdown of the bus the choir arrived in tlllsonburg just as the service ended the congregation had not yet left and they stayed to bear the selections that the choir were to have used in the service follow ing these the choir sang several other numbers and the public was thrilled thank you most sincerely for your kindness and i must add that the town of acton and the acton legion must be very proud of the chorallers again our most grateful thanks to both you and the acton legion choir very sincerely yours eh friend sec treas royal canadian legion royal canadian legion branch 153 tlllsonburg ont democratic right to vote is lost dear sir december in canadas centen nial year of 1967 will be a black black month in nassagaweyas history for the tax payers have been denied their annual vote and the democratic right to elect their representatives to council for in 1966 the majority of the council thought they were doing such a good job that they could dispense with democratic prin cipals and gave themselves a twoyear term it may be argued that at the polls in 1966 these people were reelected and that justified their decision but the taxpayer should have had the right to voteon a one or two year term as a sep arate issue we in nassagaweya have long been envied for our lively and interesting elections now i sus pect the apathy will set in and interest will lag the establish ment will prevail and the park barrel flourish william a johnston rr 2 rockwood harley to halton by harry harley burlingtons industrial mlssloner gordon blair will ha speaker when the acton deveop- ment commission and chamber of commerce hold a joint dtaner thursday november 30 in the music centre since our last column most of the time in tie house of com mons has been devoted to the de bate on capital punishment it is hard to tell what the result of this debate will be as the vote is expected to be quite close it is of course a free vote which means that confidence in the government is not involved and if the bui does not pass the government does not have to re sign as would be the case if it was a normal bill in this way members of parliament- are free to vote astbey see fit this bill vrtttadollsh capital punishment except for the mur der of peace officers and pris on guards onghftvdet the bui will be in effect for eve years at the end of which time it will have to be reviewed by parliament while it was first thought the bill might be voted on after one or two days debate it is now obvious that it is going to take much longer than this on one day for example an at tempt was made to adjourn the debate whichhas the effect of postponing bse debate for that day only as the house was only 30 minutes from the end of the days normal business it is hard to understand what the particular member a credltiste had hoped to accomplish by this maneue ver incidentally it was defeated rela- thgely easily and the house went on to the other business as list ed it is expected that the next it em of business for parliament will probably be the conclusion of the debate setting up the de partment of consumer and cor porate affairs under the regist rar general the hon john tur ner i this does not add a new government department but is an extension and further develop ment of an already existing one the new leader of the oppos ition mr staofield has now tak en his seat in the house of com mons
