page many are quitting dairy herd picture changes dairy cattle have always been predominant in halton county because of our situation close to urban centres a nigh percentage of the dairy herds have been shipping fluid milk changes have been noticed in these herds during the past few years the greatest change has been in the number of herds last year our records showed 412 milk producers 253 ship ping fluid milk 57 manufactur ing milk and 100 cream produc ers at the present time this has changed to 238 27 and 50 respectively for a total of just 315 milk producers the great est decline has been in the cream and manufacturing milk herds a few have changed to producing fluid mitt while the majority have sold their farms or just quit producing milk the necessity of grade a rating for eligibility to enter the group 1 fluid wllk pool will cause a further decline in the number of these producers many farmers because of age economics or possibility of sell ing their properties will not wish to invest the time and money necessary for renovation of their dairy bairns milk houses or barnyards fluid milk producers whose premises do not meet grade a rating by this november 30 will be ineligible to continue shipping fluid milk a few others may be forced to sell their dairy cattle if their quota allocated by the ontario milk marketing board is not large enough to provide en ough income to continue to oper ate the farm during the past few months many dairymen have been decid ing whether or not they will be staying in the dairy business they must evaluate the extra costs involved the availability of hired labor etc balancing these against the future mark- 1 for milk it is not an easy dec ision safety glasses most of the field work is now completed on the farms but there are still many jobs to do before settling down to the win ters routine do you sharpen your mower knives and other similar equipment before stor ing or do you work the other way and so will be sharpening your axe soon whichever system you use al ways keep a pair of safety glass es at the emery wheel or the grinder and more important put them on before starting work remember your eyes can nev er be replaced safety glasses are available from the halton farm safety council at the agricultural off ice milton 3m stationery robert r hamilton optometrist 116 mountainview road s georgetown production has been receiving considerable at tention during the past few months throughout ontario only eight percent of the dairy herds are on test rop or record of performance for the pure bred herds and dhla or dairy herd improvement associ ations for the grades halton county dairymen can be proud of the fact tbat 52 percent of our producers are enrolled on a testing program there are 103 rop and 60 on dhi a for a total of 163 out of 315 in this total of 315 dairy farms 50 are shipping cream only three of these farms are testing their herds thus if we think only of the fluid and manufactur ing milk shippers with 160 out of the 265 on test thlsgtveshal- ton a 60 percent level certain ly this is something of which we can be quite proud however we must continue until every herd is on test these records rop and d hla serve two purposes tbey take the guesswork out of selec ting the best cows in the herd and they can also be used to sel ect the bulls for your herd for herd
