4 i aclort free prw wednesday november 29 197 the world of outdoors art with h a w e s tap scon at maple rock snootlac range this week was 21 shot by brad mainprice sieve gov got 20 two new members joined this week they are gor don johnston who shot 17 and dave boiler visitors at maple rock this week were george harris mike homer roy and bob haley the group causing the most forest fires in the chaplain area this year was railway crews railways caused seven of the 19 forest fires in that area fisher men and hikers were the canse of four fires lightning hunters and woods eraployeescausedtwoeach while children and road employ ees caused one each the ontario department of lands and forests has been ex perimenting with aerial seeding of trees in areas that have been ban or cat off first the area to be seeded is gone over with buudosers pulling steel drams or lengths of heavy spiked anchor chalks to flatten tte remaining growth in the area b takes over 500 bushels of jack pine cooes to seed iso acres for all of us there is a time to live and a time to die and it should be that way for wild game too the problem is that there are humans roaming the woods in the guise of hunters who have never learned when to stop killing we sea evidence of it along back roads a deer carcass with the hind quarters cat away or bits of bones left from a summer kill you see it in the duck mar shes docks left at the laming that would not fit into a marts legal limit we see it in tte hard wood a partridge goo to waste because a man shot too far for a clean kill and we see it also along the creeks and rivers a dead mink or beaver with a wife a bullet hole in its head you hear it where men gather to sip beer and talk about tte big mil the easy kill or the illegal mil we bear it in small and medium sited towns even big cities for the men who cant stop killing are never definable by the site of the community nor by the cut of their clothes you cant set the activity apart by species anywhere there is something wild in the bush you can bet your best shotgun someone somewhere is figuring out a way to kill it with out being caught it happens with squirrels and rabbits as well as deer and the occasional moose the man who kills within the framework and limits of the hunt ing regulations is a different breed of cat he tempers his killing with respect for the animal he pursues he sees a wildthlng not only as a target but as a living breathing creature with more freedom than he himself will ever have he takes that life and that freedom if he can only if the law permits and he may even do it with some regret he stands with the majority of hunters but the others these are socalled men who seemingly cant stand to see any bird or animal alive in the woods they will blast an otter into eternity white hunting for ducks they will riddle a heron with bird shot if there is nothing else in the air to shoot they will kill simply because white car rying a gun they have found something with life which can be rendered dead these are the ones with black and white values a gun is to shoot a bird or animal is meant to be shot the person with thoughts so endowed is no more than a child with a mans body wearing a mans boots no more f f m there is no time to live only a time to die cheltenham victory tanners lose opener harvesters win 51 acton tanners were
