the same school board and a two year council term beginning in 1969 fbuowing mondays election which saw only a disappointing 23 of the township voters turn out to cast their ballot two veterans of the esques ing political scene made a neck- andneck race out of the election before deputy reeve george cur rie got the nod by a scant 23 votes over incumbent reeve geo rge leslie the election saw two former councillors returned to office councillor jim goodlet was de feated in the four man race for three council seats wr bob lawson led the polls for council followed close ly by present councillor cf pat patterson the last seat went to challenger wilfrid les lie who had 78 votes more than mr goodlet ah three members of the pre sent school board up for election were reelected dr c a thompson headed the polls with 814 votes he was followed by lloyd fisher with 694 and ches ter early with 667 challenger jim france a new face in the esquesing political scene polled 306 votes in his first appearance on the ballots voters gave their assent to the two year council term by almost 21 657 votes to 377 the question was defeated in only one poll of 12 and then by a mar ginal two votes presided over by the reeve who was the first to con gratulate mr currie on his elec tion its the first time ive been defeated said mr leslie but if you stay at it long enough you are bound to get it sooner or later reeveelect george currie who has held the top township post on a number of previous occasions beginning back in 1932 spoke next v i knew it was going to be a close race i doubt it theres ever been a time when theres been so much experience running for office mr currie empha sized it was a clean battle all the way with both he and the reeve good friends he said he hoped for cooperation from councill ors in his new position and thank ed ratepayers for the confidence they placed in him although he filled the deputy- reeves office by acclamation councillor tom hill who foll owed the election with keen in terest was also asked to speak he congratulated the successful candidates and reiterated his in tention to give all his support to council and vowed to do his best at
