last issue mentioned twostortessbait student loans for university stu dents one about gambling with the money the other about in vesting the money i think that youll find occur rences such as those are few and far between what should be brought to ev eryones attention is the incon sistency with which these loans are handed out i have three illustrative stories one boy i know works during the summer on the boats plying the lakes he nukes between two and three thousand per sum mer hi mother is a widow with an extremely low income he can and does collect the full mount allowable under the stu dent loan plan one girl at he university his a father who practically owns a mining town and is able to give her all the money she needs and more yet because his salary is below the poverty level she can and does collect the full amount from the loan plan yet one boy at the university collected only 200 from the plan because the government was expecting the boys father to contribute one to two thousand dollars towards the boys educa tion each year from an income of leas than 10 thousand dollars even though there are sevenpeo- ple in the family it seems that everyone includ ing the government is lamenting the lack of people wlthunlverslty degrees in this country how can you expect to have enough college grids when a student is judged worthy to attend university on the basis of his fathers income and not his own ability and dont say that if a student is smart enough he can get a scholarship because of the use of the student loin program most of the scholarships and bursar ies are no longer offered id be willing to let some of my tax money yes i do pay in come taxi go for a little gam bling ud investing if it meant that many more deserving and able students could get touniver- slty yours sincerely don long sociology 2 york unlverslty summer school we all know that high school students have two big beofs tight now lack of summer employ ment and academic training that dees not preparo them to bo ready for adulthood in a com plex changing society i would like to suggest that a very important step in the right direction towards helping to correct these beefs would be paidattendance summor school courses in social living manpower schoolboards town councils and industry by cooporitlng in such a project would break the boll before it comes to a head such a pro gramme would not only relievo the burden of unhappy restless kids who feel they are being cheated out of the chance to help themselves but would also help them to learnhowtobemoro productive and committed adults if the minimum age were set at is or is 12 and sly a min imum of 85 per hour of attend ance was paid to these summer students it would pay for itself in fewer dropouts less wanton destructlveness duo to frustra tion and boredom and less re bellion in the near future as well as more informed adults suggested courses for boys motor mechanics common household repairs small busin ess management typing and business machines cybernetics and automation fundamentals leadership training interper sonnel relationships community politics budget and finance and social economics suggested courses for girls child care home management sewing and wardrobe planning interpersonnel relationships community activities budget and finance typing and business machines sales and service techniques home medicine and first aid and social welfare would such courses not lead to happier homes and fewer mar riage breakdowns even more beter and less apathetic future citizens as well it would be a spur to the local provincial and federal economy in the pres ent and the foreseeable future why couldnt acton got on the hall and show the way to other canadian towns and cities by initiating such a program i am suro the parents and the young people would back you up all the way here is a challenge to industry chamber of commerce town council and other interested groups what are
