we enjoyed last weeks edition with its section insight acton this was a very inter esting fend most commendable effort on the part of you and your staff we found it not only interesting but highly informative and we sin cerely hop that tbe free press will be able to handle ether phases of this town in like banner as it continues to grow thanks very much for a most enjoyable treat sincerely yours robert s hart chooses to woik july 30 1968 acton ont tbe editor the acton free press dear sir this letter is in reference to the postal strike now lit effect especially hora in acton in order to clear ho lr 1 feel it is necessary to place a few fhcts before the people of acton as you know there are always two aides to every story t believe most people have heard or read the one side so ifeelthatlnorder for them to assess the situation correctly they should know the other side too if by any chance there may be anyone whodoesnot know who tbe one nonstriker is this letter will clear that up also this is not in any way an attempt to gain me sympathy in the first place i chose not to join their union because i could not see where there could be any advantage for me in it and nobody came up with a good enough rea son to convince me that i should join i have had some experience with unions in the past enough to convince me that i prefer to make up my own mlrylahd not be told what i must do in regards to my work all the staff at tbe post office knew morttnsegowhat my feelings were towards this situation and they knew also that if there wasa strike i would not be going out with mem therefore they should not have been surprised when i came to work tbe day the strike started and each day since i have always been taught that this is a free country and that its eiusens had a right to choose how they wished to make a living i choose to work for myselfand my familys living and nobody has a right to atop me from doing it the attempt was made therefore umehouse birth marriage death all in weeks report by lira a benton lire newton ruddell was a guest at the wedding of ber niece miss wilms harris tour oliver mcenroe in holy name rc church toronto and the reception at fantasy farm on july 20 we astead sympathy to mr charles meredith in the death of nil elder brother mr howard meredith at brampton a couple of weeks ago mrs n ruddell and children visited miss margot ruddell at lasdave lodge bala a few days recently congratulations to mr and mrs ronald clow on the safe arrival of their fifth little daughter recently mr and mrs d a patterson of bryson city north carolina re visiting the a c pattersons and other relatives in this area mr c meredith and thokarns spent holidays on manltoulin island mr and mrs peter schols of toronto and her grandmother mrs wlsmer of washington visited mr and mrs g scholi recently two lest wallets wet recovered yet a womans purse found along highway no 7 last week by mrs stan matthews was taken to the police office the owner called the police here and recovered her property this week two missing wallets were reported to police one was lost by a woman the other by a young girl both contained over 20 upgreie ks murks at summer school i did what was necessary within the law to counteract it i wish to express my thanks to the pollco for the help they have given mo in getting to my job as you know no one ever got anything for nothing and if by chance there is some benefit comes from this strike you can be sure there will be somo dls- advantages too trust thst my fellow workers have thought of that you knew when you grab a tiger w the tail you should be prepared f of tbe consequences i had a fair idea of what to ex- oect when i took this stand and of coursajjjiave not been dlsay pointed in fairness to the staff let me say that except for one girl nb remarks have been made to me by them the outside pic kets though have run true to form with their obscene lang uage insulting remarks and threats i suppose this is their derogative but it really isnt hurting me if they wish to show tbelf ignorance in his way i was told i should join the union and that i should have gone out with them the other side of this is i did not tell them they should not join and not go on strike i respected their opinion so i feel i had a right to expect them to respect mine in regards to wages im no different than anyone olse id like more pay of course but there are other ways to get it than striking and tying up anessenllal service to the people of the country there isarhitratlonand if need be a work to rule system that has proven successful in other disputes of this nature as to working conditions i ad mit there may be room for im provement in some offices but it really lsnt so bad here in acton we all knew before we started working here what the conditions of work were in regards to shifts and changes of jobs i maintain if you dont like the work you are expected to do the only thing to do is change your place of em ployment we have had many privileges grantedusby the post master here that im sure wo could not have cotton elsewhere many times he has permitted us to change shifts whon wo needed some time to look after personal affairs all tho staff must admit to this id like to say i bear the staff no animosity for any inconven ience caused me they are doing what they think is right but then so am i their union isnot going 1o pay my mortgage orput food on my familys table so my only al ternative is to work for it my self which i intend to do as long as im able there was a statement made by a member of the union to tho re porter of another paper to the effect that why should i be inside getting paid while they are trying to get advantages that will bono- tit me too the answer is im getting paid because im working and also when the changes come 111 have to absorb them too even though i did nothlngtocause them as i said before there are two sides to the coin i sincerely wish this situation had never arisen but it is with us so letushope we make the best of it thanking you for your courtesy i remain respectfully vie brlstow leisurely drive in country reveals lots newbuilt homes
