of what is meant by a department of lands and forests lake reclamation program while the old highway skirted the waters edge the new trans- canada was routed somewhat north of tho lake the old roadway provides an ideal turnoff and the stand of jack pine between the lake and the highway makes a welcome resting and picnicking spot only one thing was lacking the lake had no worthwhile fish in 111 perch and bass the only species present were small stunt ed ash severely infected with parasitic grubs on may 21 the department of lands and forests fish and wildlife branch in kenora began activities which will change this lake into a protective sport fishing water the outflow of the lake was dammed and 440 gallons of a special fish toxicant was mixed with the lake water this toxicant which suffocates aquatic organisms which breathe by gills is harmless to all other forms of animal ufe small fish began to come to the surface within two hours after beginning this application many were eaten by gulls which bad flocked lo the lake for a free and easy meal fish killed by this special toxicant will not harm anything that eats them the toxicant will disintegrate within two months and will no longer be lethal to fish the lake will then be ready for stocking several thousand rainbow trout eggs are being hatched at dorlon fish hatchery and the fry will by planted in dixie lake in august or september as these small rainbows will require largo quantities of food to enable them to grow to tacklostralnlng site colonies of fresh water shrimp will be introduced into tho lake these small plank ton animals are very prolific and arc top quality fish food as the trait grow they will be able to tako larger forms of food minnows will then be stocked in the lake dixie lake trout will not be preyed upon by other fish the toxicant has eliminated predators and thoro are no waterways where such fish could migrate into the lake tho grubs which in fected the bass and perch do not attack trout with a plentiful supply of food it can be expected that these rainbows will excoed five pounds within three or four years by charlie thomson acton 711 yearold soccor team played an exhibition
