jfytt cc5 youth fnesh tracks by barbara mcintosh the great guru hat experienced a marked increase in popularity in the past year boys are wearing nehrutype shirts girls are going in for indian prints yoga clubs are booming and everybody is burning incense yet few really understand the indian tradition in all its mystery and facination while it is impossible to break down all of the various cults and beliefs one can generalize to a degree indian philosophy placet the superiority of man in hit freewill and knowledge jnankamarmadhucarat the human being it not merely a combination of intellect and body but hat two other dimeniionithe moral and the spiritual man it potentially a spirit for the hindu life it not viewed at a biological process destined to end in extinction but rather a period of probation challenging the best in man and offering him the opportunity to grow atjiit best life it described by indian writer dr radhakrithman as a succession of spiritual opportunities the great hindu scripture gita asks man to cherish a reverence for life human experience and reflective meditation enables man to find the meaning of existence and ones personal life man hat a self that it deeper than hit tenses and mind sentepleatures such as seeing hearing and sex are conditioned and shortlived the deeper self in man it not satisfied with physical excitment indian philosophy is not one of free love many young people today claim to be adherents to the guruitm at an expression of their individuality it it in fact the complete opposite by knowing ones true nature we become aware of the mutual involvement of all ghandi pinpointed this truth by stating there cannot be happiness for any of ut until it it won for alljy humanity is indlvitible the moral life it not the tamo at the spiritual life at the moral level the individual- bt aware v choice and hat alternatives in contrast at the spiritual level the individual transcends this duality and is spontaneously virtuous in the indian tradition one should not be an arrogant freethinker or a blind literalist reason steps in to examine the pros and cons reflection removes the doubts therefore reason does not discover the truth it demonstrates it and spiritual intuition discerns it through meditation the individual can achieve intuition into the truth the guru is one who has discovered the truth and should therefore be held in high esteem in many respectt beliefs resemble christianity no doubt if the gumworshippers of yorkville knew exactly what they were worshipping they would be disappointed it it not a disciplinefree selfcentered way of life the universe is not a subjective fancy or a private dream and the individual does not create the worldhe accepts it wild tales of the north acton high by mary ann freuler journeyed all over our immense country canada this summer i was extremely lucky to be part of the federal provincial territorial young voyageurt programme our groups excursion was perhaps one of the most rewarding and advantageous ones of all to see whitehorse a city i hud previously only viewed on weather maps and to see historic dawson city as it was during the gold rush was really an amazingly enjoyable holiday as well as an interesting educational undertaking train to edmonton plane to whitehorse that was the scene whitehorse comprises about 7000 people and is very much like our small cities in respect to general appearance however it is widely spread out into suburbs and right downtown there are no street lights the land around whitehorse has beautiful enhancing scenery huge snowcapped mountains and a beautiful emerald lake line the dusty alaska highway sideroad which winds its majestic way to historic carcrots and carcross cemetery here kate carmacks the wife of the discoverer of gold in the yukon lies other highlights of whitehorse and district were the tahlum hot springs where we swam in 100 degree water the hydro dam miles canyon where the famous author jack bill coats swimming at olsens cabin on the night before our departure to dawson city we were guests of a formal banquet at the edgewater hotel where we were presented with souvenirs speeches of thanks from our group were given the highlight of the night was the speech of j smith commissioner of the yukon outlining the appeal of the territory 1 was looking forward to our trip to dawson city and to staying with some new people in whitehorse my billet was mr and mrs neave in dawson city mr and mrs goul this was an experience in itself most of the time in dawson city was free the wooden sidewalks resounded our footsteps and the dusty streets left our tracks we taw the gaslight follies in the famous son city museum toured keno river boat went through robert services cabin made a bus tour of bonanza creek and panned for gold and taw the trailmgj left by the gold dredging of the past we were guests at a salmon bake and ate heartily of fresh king salmon on the last night of our yukon stay we went to the midnight sun dome 4000 ft above tea level and looked down in wonder at dawson the only thing i lacked now was sleep so on the way home i slept my yukon adventure showed me an idea of the cultural aspect and proved to me how hospitable a society can be at timet i even felt humility at my lack of knowledge of the yukon now i feel respect i will return someday iutik shop the store secondary school system he wouldnt like to see anything drastic he generally likes the way- things are run in acton and he feels that the student tidily ig relatively content with rules at a minimum i dont tee any- student revolt in the near- future- final exams are a must at far as mr coats and mathematics are concerned he concludes youve got to have some test of what students have learned although j dont like to weight them 100 per cent on the exam class work is important while mathematics is a big part of his life mr coats does have other interests he is a bridge fanatic he studies the game organizes clubs at times teaches it and in his words is very much of a bridge fan tliis summer since there are several new courses opened up in the area he took up golf he is known for his active interest in politics especially around election time mr coats admits he forms hit first impressions about girls by the way they dress referring to modern mod styles he says you know its a girl when you look at them thats for sure he adds modern short skirts arent too satisfactory for the classroom especially after an hour of math when asked if he felt school officials had the right to expel students who come in long hair or sloppy dress he states we dont do it here and i agree with the policy as long as there arent too many well live with the few eratics its really not worth an issure as
