halton mp irtdlwhitiiig ftjrepcats a from this li the first of what 1 hope will become a regular column which you will find both intereatfog and informative before deciding to write a column for this paper i had long diacuasions with the editor to decide on the type of news thought would be of intereit to you the reader the editor wat very strongly of the minion that i ihould not write exclusively about the regular business of the houae of commoni ai after all thl newt la already very well covered by the regular news service it was felt that in this column i should talk more about my personal experiences as the member of parliament for halton and to relate to you some of the background activities regarding committee work and other lessknown public government business i agree with the editor and i feel this should be the prime purpose of this column i believe you are aware of the daytoday parliamentary decisions but are not always able to keep up to date with your members activities i hope you will find in this column items which intereit you and that you will gain a better understanding of how your member of parliament serves you and the country i trust you will write to me about matters i discuss in this column so that i may have the benefit of your views and opinioni from time to time i will specifically ask for your views on certain issues which are topical by including a survey or questionnaire in this column the prime purpose therefore of this column will be to keep you informed of my activities ai they relate to the life of a member of parliament it will phone me in oakville or write to me in ottawa and the necessary arrangements to meet will be made since my election on june 25 i made a trip to ottawa to organize my office and have also seen many people throughout the riding during july and august i was amazed to learn how many constituents were having trouble obtaining passports from the canadian passport office and i was able to assist about 30 of them i securing this important document as a result of direct dealing with the passport office i was personally able to tee some of the problems fsced by the general public in their dealings with the passport office i accordingly wrote a lengthy letter to the hon mitchell sharp secretary of state for external affairs who is reponsible for passport operation and nude several suggestions which i hope will prevent some of the problems which have bothered tb many people in this riding aid no doubt all across canada in their efforts to obtain passports one of the suggestions i made to the minister wat that the pasiport application form be reprinted in a more explicit manner thus enabling the applicant to know precisely what information the department requires of him in many cases the application is returned to the sender simply because it it not entirely clear what information the department requires as an example a passport application was returned became the applicant had staled ontario as her place of birth instead of canada i believe thit type of behavior it quite unnecessary in preparation for the opening of parliament i attended two caucus meellngt these meellngt are moil informative and veryinteretllng following these caucus meetings i attended a number of meetings designed to acquaint freshman members or parliament and briefing on the various regulation which mutt be carried out on parliament hill at a new member of parliament i have been contacted by the president of the privy council the hon donald mtcdonald one of whose duties it to atslgn members of parliament to various committed in hit letter he lilted some 20 committees and asked me to indicate which of these i would like to serve on in keeping with the promises i made during the election campaign i have chosen the following committees as being of particular interest to me the committee on housing urban development and public works agriculture as it pertains to eastern canada regional development induitry and national resources external affairs and national defence labour and manpower and immigration there are many problems facing canada and the world this year and i look forward to helping solve many of them in the house of commons of course one of the most pressing needs in canada it to solve our critical housing problem i am pleated to report to you that a special housing committee hat been formed by members of the halton liberal association under the chairtnanihip of david g butler of oakville this committee hat presented a brief to the hon paul hellyer i was also very pleased to hear that the oakville and district labour council it submitting a brief on the housing crisis i look forward to following the findings of the task force on housing with keen interest and i would urge all interested partiet who have thought on this important matter to submit a brief to the minister responsible for housing the hon paul hellyer when i took my seat in the house of
