was appointed to two committees of the house of commons by the hon donald macdonald president of the privy council and the minister responsible for assigning members lo the various committees i will be serving on the committee for regional development and the labour manpower and immigration committee in the near future i expect to be appointed to additional committees which i hope will be the committee on housing and- the committee on consumer affair i am very pleased to be a member of the regional development committee because it has many areas iif responsibility which are ofgrcat interest to me for example regional development it responsible for arda agriculture rehabilitation development act and fred funds for rural economic development pari of the regional development work is very much concerned with soil and water conservation as many of you know i was a member of the hallon region conservation authority and held that position until i was elected to parliament last june i have a great concern for the natural resources of our country and believe we should take every possible step to preserve the natural beauty that came with our country i believe that both federal and provincial governments should do everything in their power to properly utilize all our natural resources i would like to take this opportunity to assure members of the llalton region conservation authority that i will have their interests in mind when the regional development committee is discussing matters which relate to conservation as far as the labour manpower and immigration committee is concerned again i am pleased to be a member because of the great interest this committee will have for many people in halton riding in the past few months since i have been your member of parliament a great many people who are immigrants themselves have come to me with problems related to finding jobs fittirlg themselves into the labour force and asking for assistance in bringing their families to canada new immigrants to halton become excellent canadian citizens and are usually very pleased with the many opportunities which canada offers them and it is undetstandable that they want to bringtheir families o share id their good fortune of course- there are many problems associated with labour manpower and liiuiligratioii and therefore as your member of parliament i will take an activj part in dealing with matters which affect people in nry- riding one of thej most recent problcrus is that of the chechoslovakian immigrants who are professional people in particular there has been a great deal of comment recently on the problem of chechoslovakian dentists being qualified to practise in ontario it is my belief that we must not prevent qualified dentists from working in their profession for a period of two and a half years i believe that when a qualified professional dentist arrives in this country he is faced with many problems for example the language problem techniques a different method of dealing with patients etc however i feel that the canadian dental association should give every new immigrant dentist an opportunity to write an examination as soon as he arrives so that he might determine his qualifications and also his weaknesses if he can pass the examination then he should he allowed to practise his profession if he fails one or more categories then at least he will know which areas to concentrate on and he should be given the opportunity to take a second examination within a reasonable period of time in order that he may qualify as quickly as possible many areas in canada particularly the smaller towns and communities have a crying need for more medical and dental services and we should do everything in our power to permit qualified doctors and dentists to practise in their new homeland canada is a country of opportunity and we must provide that opportunity with a minimum of red tape and regulations all jobs will continue under new county board teachers from all north halton jammed georgetown high school auditorium tuesday of last week to hear the new county board of education system explained to them in a brief welcoming speech firincipal m furlong stated he loped any fears or misapprehensions teachers might have would be allayed by the afternoons meeting chairman tom ramautarsingli introduced william lawson chairman of esquesing school board and a member of the interim school organization committee who outline the function of the isoc our main role was to pave the way for the new board said w lawson and try to bring about an orderly transfer of duties he tecalled the job became too big for one group so the staff advisory committee was formed to help out area supervisors made up this committee in conclusion mr lawson stressed the need of communication between students teachers principal and board ii b pluyfair told of the work of the ontario teachers federation advisory committee and w l mcneil of the work of the staff advisory committee o g mcdowell arej supervisor for north halton pointed out the dramatic decrease in the number of school boards in the province over the past twenty years from 5600 in l45 to 1467 in 1967 and finally down to 125 in 1969 thehree retarded school authorities will come under the county board after listing the number of members on the board from each municipality he reassured teachers they would all still have jobs in 1969 every teacher now employed by a school board in the county becomes an employee of the county board he concluded a description of program and special services presently available in schools in the county showed georgetown schools to be well down the list only burlington and oakville have any psychological services whatsoever a e robinson who presented the figures hoped these inequalities would be overcome under the new system j vv singleton demonstrated a recommended model of the administration to avoid the possibility of the new board gradually losing touch with the public he showed how lines of communication must be kept open between students teachers principals and board it is important teachers arc heard and included in group presentations to the board said area superintendent robinson he stressed the necessity of student groups beingable lo talk lo the board at the conclusion of the meeting esquesing supervising
