6 the acton free pratt wednesday october 23 1968 september ceremony in bolton of interest to acton friends by wendy thomson when the youngsters were small birthdays were no trouble at all i just whipped up a cake added the appropriate number of candles and had that for the dessert of an ordinary dinner when the oldest two entered school and had friends in for the narties it was still very little trouble lveryonc arrived ran up and down the hills for on hoiir or so ploying games that kids play came in for a feed of hbt dogs ice crealn and cake investigated the presents and trotted off home all i had jo do was serve then pick the scraps of buns from under renaud- cleland wedding vows in knox church on october 5 the table after pour the wlerjcr water over hiem to give to the dog and throw out the paper plates over the years i heard that other peoples parties were irtr morc sophisticated one mother turtis off the lights arid tells ghost stories and another takes out her fajse teeth and makes faces im afraid i havent the inventiveness for the first nor the means to do the second my usual method for entertaining youngsters is to give them tome fairly complicated item and leave them alone while they become engrossed in trying to figure out what to do with it as this doesnt work too well for a group ive been trying to think urj something new exciting and inexpensive for beths birthday she will be ii in a week or so and every now and then it becomes apparent that she and her friends are on the verge of becoming young ladies ive forgotten what young ladies like to do other than sulk and giggle therefore i will happily shelve the entertainment problem for a few days and get expert help with it from the mother of a 1 3 year old the birthday party menu had a good shaking up and i substituted things that were as filling as hot dogs but a little more fancy a party sandwich loaf can be made up very easily in the morning and served with radishes celery sticks and carrot curls instead of baskets of candies there will be popcorn balls at each place at the table i have already made one batch and will do another up this weekend using a different flavour there will be endugh left over to wrap up f 6 r h a i io we e n trickort rearing to save mejthe usual last minute rush into town to buy candy party sandwich loai prepare the following tantlwltlt ftlllnfs ham lalad cottage cheese and pineapple devilled egg and chicken ulad you can substitute tome of your own favourite fillings futt us long mi they all go together peanut butter and salrncn tastes terrible i usually ute cream cheese and cucumber instead of cottage cheese remove crusts from an untllced loaf of white bread snd cut lengthwise into five slices spread each slice with softened butter spread ham salad between the first and second slices of bread cottage cheese and pineapple between the second and third slices egg between third and fourth slices and chicken ulad between fourth and fifth slices press loaf firmly together wrap in waxed paper and chill in refrigerator for an hour frost top and sides of loaf with cream cheese softened with cream decorate top with whatever you have on handchopped nuts parsley radish slices sliced pickles etc cut into fairly thick slices when serving easy popcorn halls i pice jelly powder small size any flavour vs cup while sugar a cup corn syrup
