are peopje youth page comment mr lambourn doesnt see why he sliould have to stick rigidly to certain conventional styles so occasionally he turns up wearing a turtleneck and sports jacket sometimes i just get tired of u tie and white shirt a turtleneck is more comfortable and 1 think its stylish he doesnt particularly approve or disapprove of current mod fashions and dismisses them as just another fad he concludes we had fasliions more outlandisli than these in the 18th century as an english instructor mr lambourn likes to see mature students who can think for themselves and interpret without a great deal of guidance theres no room in literature tor stock answers because it is dealing with life which is often chaotic its this wide rdngc of interpretation that makes literature interesting naturally be likes to see students take an interest in english and enjoy reading according to mr- lambourn the situation in education today is something of a mess he feels that a certain amount pt student power is good if it is accompanied by maturity and responsibility mr lambourn t he likes working with young people and has concluded that the criticism of the younger generation is grossly exaggerated through the press and its need for sensationalism there is only a small percentage of youth getting into trouble the majority are not corrupt or degenerate he concludes hat hippy protests arc harmless but futile as the cliche statcsthc little dogs bjrk but the caravan moves on i like young people but i disapprove of filth and sexual promiscuity drug addiction is an expression of the death wish a person has the freedom to destroy his health but i think it is rather disgusting in his snaifc time mr lambourn likes golf skiing and sailing he hopes to buy a sail boat in the future he also likes to get up in the north woods away from the rat race on fishing expeditions he prefers semiclassical music the lambourns live in weston which means commuting every day to school its really not very fjr argues mr lambourn he can nuke it in 4s minutes down the 401 and besides he likes driving he lias always had a volkswagen because it is manocuvcrable i dont mind shifting gears it keeps me awake guelph student condemns acton apathy dear sir i have just finished reading neil andersons review of the ontanons controversial high school supplement either mr anderson wrote ins critique under the direction of hii english teacher whomever that might be or he completely misunderstood the supplement s intent and misinterpreted its statements to begin with the supplement was clearly a form of persuasion several persuasive techniques such as repetition and weighted arguments were used however tlui main purpose of the paper wa to act as a stirhulusto try and arouse positive and creative thinking on the part of the student evidently it failedin its purbose w far as the acton students were concerned as in referring to the unions socalled efforts to nuke a mockery of our society mr anderson states and i might add emphatically that they must be suppressed just what docs he intend to mo set up a totalitarian committee to purge the country of these unions members what would happen to our society then mr anderson i say that you arc making a mockery of the idea of freedom of speech by making such statements i sincerely hope that mr anderson and a few others will take the time to really sit down and think about what the supplement has to say and slop all this fuss about u few unnecessary adjectives and u few illplaced comments yours sincerely anthony hurst 85 professor returned from lunch saw a sign on his door saying back in 30 minutes and sat down to wait for himself after a while he went home slammed his wife kissed the door and then struck a match to see if he had blown out the candle before going to bed viceprincipal mr bray pointed revolution out nmetyfivebcr cent of the students were indiffer ent five per cent gave their opinion such little reaction clearly indicates that acton students of today are either uninformed and dont realize what is happening or else they just dont care to return to mr andersons article referring to a student unions spokesmans demands he remarks it is plain to see the good and bad points of these insipidly mane demands i fail to see how such suggestions as withdrawal of all american troops from foreign bases elimination of air and water pollution and the availability of free birthcontrol supplies and information can possibly be brushed aside as insipidly mane demands i impugn mr andersons choice of adjectives and his reasons for his vague and all too general attitude he goes on to say that it shows the communistic views of student unions absurd he continues with it appears to me that the student unions are backed by a semicommunistic group intent upon destroying our structure of society i must say that mr andersons logic is interesting to say the least why on earth would the student unions be striving for freedom of the individual nonconformity the right to oppose the status quo and political and social justice if they were being backed by a socialistic body that desires suppression of the individual strict censorship of the press and completely organized and enforced conformity worthwhile our educational system could stand to humanize and hberalie to survive in a liberal society the tragedy of the present revolution lies in the fact that is is becoming bogged down m ohtics and ideology a small nucleus of farleft activists have taken hold of the power reins it is they who will win all the student power headlines and to whom the power on student democracy is shifting for them the student mass has become the proletariat that must be indoctrinated into revolution they organic the shakcouts foulouts teachins love ins and beins in an attempt to spread the cause many of them hardly make a lecture all year because the crusade is a fulltime effort not only do they complain about non response but also about wrong response they blame that on apathy and ignorance those who dont last sunday evening is members oj the baptist hi i ellowslup met at the home of hill landsborougli for school with art cooper as teacher think as they do are wrong this is pure politics the truth is the majority of students simply do not have tun the conscientious are there to learn not to govern has there ever been a student council that hasnt had difficulty in getting a quorum out to vote has there ever been a school that has not had student affairs controlled planned and activated by a small core of executives how ridiculous to think of student power on the total scope of school administration randy coker was too pooped to pone after comlncj in second in the midgets cross country division exhibits itself in quiet loyally and an understood confidence and superiority complex yet the rah rah kind is definitely there in a small nucleus of students the school tloat in the fall fair parade
