in what many termed one of the townships quieter elections just three ballots faced most or the voters three separate school supporters received two extra ballots when they went to the polling booths deputyreeve william hoey seeking the reeves post at the retirement of reeve william coulter easily won the seat when he defeated a l gus goutouski 456 votes to 272 horace myth the only township resident in the race was unsuccessful in winning the position of acton nassagaweya represntative to the halton county superboard which comes into being on jan 1 thomas watson of acton gamed 1 088 votes to blyths 689 and murray smiths 395 to win the seat blyth had a good lead when the votes cast in the township were counted but acton voters swung heavily to watson and gave him a definite victory when the votes were polled with a resounding 496 to 229 votes township voters rejected the idea of sunday racing at mohawk raceway council had been approached earlier this year for a decision and at the insistence of councillor mrs anna macarthur had sent it to a plebiscite the 10 separate school supporters in the milton heights area were also eligible to vote on representatives of the roman catholic county board but only three voted all three votes went to jim langedyk who opposed angelo tonelh for miltons seat on the board about 60 ratepayers gathered at brookville hall monday evening after the 8 oclock poll closuig to await the returns the first poll did not report until about 9 20 p m and three more totals came ui from deputy returning officers within the next is minutes although the totals of the first four wards gave a good indication ot the eventual outcome the crowd waited tensely until 10 30 pm before the final ward fully was posted on the blackboard there were 2087 voters eligible to cast ballots and jusi 728 or 35 46 per cent went to the polls two years ago tl township had 300 less voters but with a lively race for all council seats the turnout was 48 30 per cent called on for a speech when the final figures were posted reeveelect hoey said it was certainly an interesting battle and i hove enjoyed the last two weeks of my life in nassagaweya more that the last 13 years i have met a lot of very fine people i le said he was happy to be elected and hoped that in 1969 and 1970 every resident of nassagaweya would work together and do the best we can interviewed later he suggested the most important challenge facing the township in the new year was reexamination of the zoning bylaws it took us three years to get our zoning bylaw and official plan he said and now it is out or date it has already been challenged and the township must keep it updated he felt loser in the race for the reeveship mr goutouski said he would have been delighted if he had won but even though he lost the race he felt satisfied i gave mr hoey a good run for his money he later told this newspaper his campaign was based on extending telephone calling service in the township and obtaining better safety measures in the township council can go after the bell and have something done in this matter he said and ill be at the first meeting of council to enquire why there is no protection yet at the tirst line c p r crossing goutouski said lie would be back in the election forum again in two years time without fail mr blyth told the small crowd he would have to bow the the majority of votes cast in acton and thanked everyone in the township for their overwhelming support i hope you will all gel behind the new board and give them your supportmr watson is a very good man and he lus a lot of experience he added a hope thehoard members would drop their north south ideas and work for the good of the whole of halton county happiest woman in the crowd on election night had to be councillor macarthur who had waged a long campaign to get sunday races turned down 1 am terribly happy 1 leel viry very happy site said when the results on the sunday racing plebiscite were posted she had spent the weekend campaigning in her ward and urguig the people to vo c no on the racing questioneven through she had been acclaimed as deputyreeve for 1969 and 1970 and didnt have to campaign for herself i just cannot go for the conccpl of betting on sundays she said in an interview the horse races would be alright if money was not involved the people of campbellvillc would be affected and it was not fair to those who worked there to ask them to work on sundays now the people have spoken and this was the will of the people she concluded while the final decision rests with the council mrs macarthur felt they would have no choice but to reject sunday racing after such a decisive vote councillorselect gordon agnew james watson and art gibson were among the audience in the hall during the posting of results all were acclaimed to the seats for the twoyear term mr gibson served coffee to the crowd the halfway point in the first draw eight games season the membership committee is still actively selling lifetime initiation certificates the first and a very important filiate of our financial program lowever the second phase of this program is now being pushed by the tinance committee headed by treasurer kent hallman this involves the securing of a covenant commitment from every curler and prospective user of the new acton curling club to purchase by october 31 of next year 1969 one or more debentures the minimum debenture commitment to be gamed from the club has been set at 40000 and the executive would be highly pleased if the promises to purchase debentures exceeds that amount these arc not attractive debentures when lodge elects 69 officers wor bro c k browne conducted the election of o f ficcrs for the lol at crewsons and only sx thereafter yet the executive is convinced that there are enough interested curlers in acton willing to make a small financial sacrifice in order to invest in a muchneeded recreational facility for our town lets say d man and his wife decide to purchase s200worth of debentures this means they are willing to donate id the club approximately s16 the first year arid 6 the second ycarthe difference in the interest payable on those debentures and a debenture paying 8 from the day of issue this we think is not a very great sacrifice if there are new mombers in the club desiring
