jfkf c t jvrc youth fresh tracks by barbara mcirttosh smalltalk at one time or mother everybody finds thtfflatrves taking an empty teat betide a stranger on a but or train inlllmlly you both open pocket novcli and pretend to become immersed in tlie plot you both glance out the window at alternate ifllervtli nuking ture that eyes never nuke contact both know that converution would relax the atmoiphere but both are reluctant to make the firet move then aa if ordained a book slides off a knee and the itrangera pair of hand picks it up is this book any good he atki and wilh that you are off into converution about general reading habits basically why you are travelling in the tame direction and the general stale of the weather when the trip eitds you both realiu you havent said anything but nullttlk wat all that was necessary a prime complaint of the love generation is our tocalled communication problem people worry because ihey dont talk about important things theres no honest self expression they say souls dont touch vel when it comes right down to it mulltalk is a vital social function i mean you just cant walk up to your mothers friend in the post office and hit her with a stalement like whats your view of the escalation of the exportation of kangaroo fur from australia no matter how vital you think the issue is instead you talk about the weather or the superficial stale of each others health because thats all that is really necessary to be friendly and you dont ask your taxi driver if he thinks war is an economic catalyst you talk about the weather or the superficial alate of roads around town because thats all that it really necessary to make the trip enjoyable granted some smalltalk expressions are sadly overworked take how are you or whats new with you for example at ihe tame time can you think of anything else heller to say when you meet a former acquaintance you never knew very well in the first place and you couldnt care leu about now young people traditionally loathe the tmautalli of first dates wilh those inevitable questions about musical tulet and plans for the future yet any relationship hat to start somewhere a certain amount of smalltalk is inescapable if we kept track of everything we talked about in an ordinary day we would no doubt find a good percentage of ii said very little and meant even leu but then surely we can hope to really know and undertand only a very few people out of all the mils of humanity we meet in a lifetime in fact to really touch souls with just one other person should be enough for the rest laboratories wlien the company decided lo relocate out of acton he decided to change professions while he still had the opportunity njnd enrolled in a general art program at macmatter university he feels he was more motivated at an adult student because he wu f electing a huge investment i igure it cost me 118000 including that loss of regular earnings for the full four years he uys unlike many teachers mr 44 49 9e rrswrnltam 0m tire up for spring see lou hes got tots and theyre cheap lous spur service roacwoot rr rm rrrrrrrtttui j coach skerret j on ofsaa finals basketball coach brian skerrelt had a few comments to make about last weeks ofsaa finals and the threelay frolic in peterborough that went with it i was pleased with the first game with st annes but in the second we choked up perhaps due to the let down of not making the finals and the pressures of a terminal game system in monday nights game the redmen shot a 51 percent field goal percentage and were playing at their best according to mr skerrelt they lost to st annes 7564 and the si annes team went on to take second spot in the tournament tuesday night the redmen dropped their field goal average to 27 per cent and tost to fort william by a narrow 3t5 edge i think we are as good if not better than fort william assetts coach skerrelt we just werent playing up to par fort william went on into the consolation finals mr skerrelt added i would put us in 4th or 5th place in ontario in his estimation the only team that was outstanding above the rest was the top winner from pelham nejr welland with a giant centre of 6 8 they won all their games all in all mr skerrelt wasnt impressed with either the peterborough transportation system or the reception given tlie teams by ofsaa or ihe conduct of the acton spectators 1 1 would be my recommendation not to take spectators in- the future unless they are under ichool supervision one teacher is not enough he said a busload of cheerleaders and fans accompanied ihe team to peterborough but were completely on their own as far as accommodations and activiliet were concerned transportation was a problem and the team had lo rely heavily on taxis to get to and from the games the 10 players who were housed in billets were supposed to have transportation provided but many of them didnt of course the four who stayed with mr skerrelt in the hotel had to find their own way there was no entertainment provided for the teams other than a lour of trent university campus and a banquet held tuesday night aa for the banquet mr skerrelt commented the fried potatoes and cold meal werent what we expected after leading actons senior redmen to their first cwossa championship ever coach brian skerrelt says he it handing in his whistle he explained that while he has enjoyed working with the team he has found it lakes up too much of his time both in school qnd after hours ive been overinvolved in things he says i dont wont to be a hog id like to see some other teachers devote tome time next year he uys he plans lo expand his guidance program instead rognvaldson hu ihe training to teach in either ihe arts or the technical fields for a number of years he chose geography but three yean ago switched full time into ihe industrial arts department at head of ihe department mr rognvaldson cant see aclon developing a larger technical wing because the present building could not be adapted without a huge capital expenditure if industrial arts are expanded in tlie future it will probably be in a centrally located school below the escarpment this was the vision of industrial arts people as early aa 1956 and probably would have come about if georgetown hadnt gone ahead on their own at the present time the school offers training courses in electronics small engines welding machine shop and woodworking on the fouryear plan next year some students on tlie fiveyear program will be able to take shop options as well in addition next year there wdl be a new course for girls called home mechanics mr rognvaldson has set up the program in response to appeals from girls who want lo learn useful utile tips like how to change fuses fix drippy taps mend broken chain and unjam the car gear shift at well at practical training the girls will learn creative arts in woods and metals since its founding four yean ago mr rognvaldson hat been the sole instructor of the high school driver training program and he it convinced that the legal driving age should be raised to 18 i think 16 is too early because i dont think they have developed a mature sense or anticipating a problem yet at the ume time driven should start early when their learning process reflect action and enthusiasm are at hheu highest he adds mr rognvaldson suggests a temporary license at 16 followed by a twoyear period of actual driving experience before the driver assumes full responsibility for a vehicle he is convinced that the school training program it helpful and necessary in the community he regrets that ii it taught on a voluntary basis outside of schoul time and would tike to see more teachers become involved in the four years since it was initiated nearly 200 driven have graduated and out of them there has only been one serious accident and a few minor mishaps he said about so students have taken advantage of the course this year he is the only teacher to complete ihe required course through the department of highways the department of education and the ontario safety league outside of school mr rognvaldson pursues a variety of interesta tie is a member of ihe ys merjvcii kill j ttfaatguc order an avid sportsman he enjoys hunting and fishing and last year took his wife on a canoe trip through the wilds of algonquin paik on the music side he enjoys classical works best but he it certainly not averse to swinging out with a lively gogo beat the one thing he wishes he could do and doesnt is ski it wasnt a popular sport in
