the adon fra prata wednesday may 21 1969 second daaa kail bittntjoa number 05 1 5 by wendy thomson a doctor friend once aald something to the effect that when you get any idnd of animal for a candy pet you must be resigned to the fact that you will outhw not only it but probably many more ive never counted the pcta wve lost but there teems to have been quite tiring of one poisoned run over stolen and lost the hardest loaaesi woe sue cords little hound that loraeone- deliberatery shot and my old mamacat she was the frnt cat we had up here in acton and being tbeunry one in th houae rapidly became a real ttttle character one day when i fcms away the climbed the hydro pole for some leuin or other and that was the tad end i net one thing that make it hard it that we being watd out hie scent back then bath went down to the pasture to feed the hoses and was unperupssusatbu 1tftffa wkrd you become ad attached to an animal the hurt goes very deep wei tfe lost andy our little ferret last week and what made that teem to bad wai the fact thai ferrets die within t few days on their own the thought of him curled up under a bush in all that miserable tain starving to death wet pretty downheartening if you remember we bought andy a few months ago and found much to our delight that instead of being the vicious killer characteristic of the breed he was quite the opposite in fact we had to shut him fat hit cage mainly to get a bit of peace he insisted on climbing into everybodys lap and licking their hands off then continuing up the arm and around the neck to clean a patch of hair that wasnt too bad but when he came to an ear he whuffted fat it and moat people found this intolerable come nighttime more that once ive had to got take him out of 10yearold jims pillow case not to much for safetys take because being a ferret he had that definite very definite musky smell during the day he slept in one of the laundry baskets downstairs and i always had to go through the wash quite carefully before throwing it in the machine once awakened he was overjoyed to have company and insisted on trying to dim up my jeans i suppose i was the only house wife who did the wash with ferttt clinging to bar ive teen him after a good run out in the fields lie down on his back cradled in jims arms yawn two or three times then let himself be rocked to sleep whenever i wanted to clean puddle lie was dirty full of bunt and bone thin lilt pews were worn almost raw and the hair was all worn off the inside of his hind tegs from the constant rtinnlng even hit chin and note were worn hairless i guess from keeping his nose to the ground when he came home he ale for half an hour just lay in our arms being dried and cuddled then went to sleep for two days if we had had any doubts of how tame he is after we spent an agonlifatg hour combing out burrs and removing ticks while andy just lay they were gone to top it all off not only did tansycat deign to sniff him over and administer few licks here and there but when andy came across kitten he licked it all down and gave it the most mothering it s had in a long timet somehow i think were spoiling him for rat hunting in all the resulting exuberance from having things come out right in the end for a change i baked two pies now this isnt anything tp tome people they can bake a dozen piet at a sitting along with 20 dozen cookies six dozen muffins five dozen tarts not to mention the bread but me if i turn out two 2crutt pies i figure im doing well these are two of tny favourites rhubarb pie prepare enough pastry for two crusts rou out one half and fit it into 9 pie nate waih 1 w pounds of rttubub and cut into i inch pieces thus stiouu beatwjour cups 4 a l avtaijrscil add 111 cups suear v4 cup flour 14 tsp mace dash salt u cup orange juice mia well add rhubarb and stir to coal pieces well spoon into prepared shell and cover with lop pastry cut holes in lop for vents seal the edecs place pie plate on cookie sheet to catch the drips and bake at 425 degrees for so retfuitee i ve run out of room so will put the apple pie in nest week the house and couldnt keep an eye on him id have to put him outside in hit cage because the n a i first chance he got hed crawl in aal3 k alq 10 behind the bath tub and go to sleep and wouldnt come out waa5 nosioss then hed come trotting out at the most inopportune times like when there was company and hed scare someone by getting friendly with their ankle bone or appear when one of the cats was escorting a kitten down the hall and such then one day he was gone the hinge had worked loose on the lid to his cage and there was no andy we hunted and hunted but we had no idea even of which way he had gone there it bush to both sides of us and the stream and pasture to the back and our only chance of teeing him at all would be if he ran across an open patch of ground just as we happened to be looking at it two days later and no andy we gave up hope even if hed tried to find hit way back the steady raw would have mrs robert algie was hostess and miss isabel anderson presided for the may meeting of the afternoon auxiliary w m s of knox church in tribute to
