the acton rr prasa wednesday july 2 1969 news and views by lorraine whilst tnontvlns down rustic path in the algonquin park area ihb weekend 1 dunked my toe on a mull smooth object which upon investigation proved to be an indian arrowhead the course we had been walking on was one of the old original indian trails which after our pioneer forefathers moved into this country became a hone trail for wagons and riders alike the arrowhead which i had found was t learned from a resident native only one of many such treasures which have been uncovered by unwitting hiker over the years and i suppressed a feebng of nostalgic and almost reverent awe at my realoed touch with canada past i could envision the indian settlement tents encamped it the point on which i was standing all the horiei i could recall of young braves and wise warriors defending their right lo protect their homeland were triggered by my knaglnitiort as pages of hiilory mentally turned in my mind and the sun warmed arrowhead which i clutched in my hand became a link between yesterday and today more than tome hundred years or so have elapsed since that arrowhead had been sprung from the bow of a canadian native perhaps by youthful hunter on a quett for a prue buffalo steer or in an algonquin raiding party when young braves raced againit their predatory while brothers i thought of the wild game the lakes teaming with fish and the clean pur healthy rrethneu of life only century has elapsed in which a country inhabited by free living indian people who with nature playing lis role as benefactor by providing its unquanlilative supply of vegetation and hunting prey combined with the spiritual stimuli of her natural beauty lias been developed into a white mans land of inhabitance monopoliiatlon greed and we are told progress in a mere twenty years multiplied by five we have polluted a great percentage of the fresh waters absorbed much of the wild life poisoned the healthful air and thwarted the original inhabitants of a canada which war once the free proud and uncomplicated homeland of the indian i juggled the arrowhead in my hand and tucking it into the hock pocket of my jeans i turned back towards the cottage contemplating that this week marks canadas dominion birthday celebrating one hundred and iwo years of so called progress progress for whom menially i shivered at i thought of wlul another century of a similar program of development could bring rockwood deaths host picnic for antique cars despite the weather and the holiday weekend 25 families belonging to the antique cars hope dominion day road rally will become annual event here with the geographical tract between rockwood terra cotta and belfountain u the area of operation the eramota presbyterian young peoples society of rockwood and eden mills presbyterian churches staged 70 mile road rally on sunday june 29 although actual participation in the rally was disappointing the spirit and excitement could not be deterred by the enthusiastic young participants the winning car was operated by don sinclair with navigators june thompson and donna hilts all or rockwood they received individual trophies as well as a plane ride donated by al niched rockwoodt local groceterian the second place car was driven by glen gardiner of eden mills with dons tubman of the unte village acting as chief navigator they alio received individual trophies and a 5 gas voucher from johns texaco station is guelph rockwoods glen gray operated the third place vehicle and was ably assisted by val wright of guelph as navigator the whole event was a ball aajd donna hflta and wa had a srii siattoliwjtl organiser ssjabjajaynement i guess the reason we didnt have as many cars out as we hid hoped for said don was probably due to its being held on a holiday weekend as this car rally is now becoming an annual event the young peoples group hopes that more rallyists will set aside the dominion day weekend to attend and participate regularly and they are just as hopeful that another such evnt scheduled for eatly fall will eneouruge more young drivers to gel their cars into a mobile and condition roadworthy the 69 graduates and said mane ellen saunders no student would pass up the opportunity of celebrating the greatest part of the school year the beginning of the summer holidays approximately 75 girls and boys from grades seven and eight turned out for an evening of dancing in the school auditorium to a dance sponsored by the students council and as was earlier stipulated casual clothes were permitted so many of the students wore slacks with the auditorium gaily decorated by the well known quartette of mary anne waddetl jacqueline gooyers judy devries and marie ellen saunders with plenty of potato chips and soft drinks on hand to quench the thirst and appetites of the participants the evening was a tremendous success and culminated the end of the reigning student council for 69 of the rockwood centennial
