the acton free praia wednesday august 6 1969 nonagenarian spent years railroading canadian west funeral service at churchill or mrs gmton swackhamer by wendy thornton the big trail ride at rodtwood it tomorrow july 27 and im not just too sure what shape 111 be in by the tune i finish the 25 miles bi sh hours with trail tests to boot and i thought id belter write some sort of an explanation in cate i dont get a chance to finish thb the youngster and i have had the horses out three or four evening a week leans around the concession block trying to get in shape and im in some thipelwindbuiri on the front tide and blatter on theebewhefe ill vhave to renumber to take along few bandaids just in ease i sometime gel the oddest looks out on the roada grown woman playing the cowboyt and lisdlasu hit iteally horsetiding u a very relaxing pit time no mattef what mood i go out in i always feel belter when i pi hack- its a rnuvelous feeling when the horses boundcovetirig bounds go to a flatopen rhythmic smoothness that has no mote jolt than a menyfofound its like the toothing effect of a locking chair combined with the exhlleerellng power of a harleydavlson now if thb is as far as the column goes i will either be lort somewhere hung up la a tree or incapacitated one broken leg and two broken arms plus a bump on the head and one onelsewhere an d to to bed im back we nude it safe and fairly sound what a dayl it wai like nothing id ever done before to begin with it pouted all daynol rained but poured and me wllh no raincoat cord dug out hit duckhunting flicker army issue but by the look of ii he not only hunted ducks in ii but kept them ttoied in it for tome length of time after i had to wash it and dry it before i could put it on it came down to my ankles and the hood fell down to my note binder twine around the middle helped tome but not much by the time i got sorted out and straightened up it wit 10 lstimetogo velvet didnt puticulaily care for this huge slicker flapping around on her back and i was afraid that if the farted galloping the wind would flu the sleeves and id takeoff i should title here that cord thought i was a complete idiot riding in weather like thtl i wit in good company 87 of ut sel out and almost all were soaked to the tkin within an hour once wet though everyone stopped worrying about it except for the odd comment when their boots overflowed the butliet were weighed down with water and hinging cross the trails the easiest way to travel these paths was to lie flat along the horses neck but that had two drawbacks fint every time i lay down my bindertwine belt got hooked over the saddle horn and i couldnt get up again secondly every time i looked up to tee if the path was clear h watjutt in time to get another wet branch dtp across the face great fun i did just about get hung up in a tree too i put up my arm to ward off a big dead branch and the dang thing wn up my sleeve and lifted me velvet walked right out from under and i wai hanging there with my feet ttill in the stirrups hoping the hotte would stop then something let go im still not t ture what and on i went there was on point where velvet wasnt handling too well and it took a few minutes for me to realize that one rein had come undone entirely from the bit a great help not much else went wrong beth and jim on their two ponies hid stayed right on the mares till for the fint 10 mllei then much to their ditgutt we took them out as they were to cold and wet they could hardly move otherwise we slid down a muddy stretch of path and into a tree which his kept me hobbling since alto at one point velvet decided to get out of the mud by climbing onto a utile plateau with the judget i had some time convincing her that that waint on the marked route the bandaids i took them but when i needed them both they and me were too wet to stick together much to my surprise while i was thinking id be disqualified for being overtime my watch sot waterlogged and quit i nithed in five hours and 6 minutes i felt great and of course none of the family were there to tee the grand entrance that i and my showoff horte made they were home in front of the fire no recipes
