the clay ateak put by rev andrew a mckenzie of knox presbyterian churdi the acton free press wednesday october 1 congregational confucts during ihe past thirty yean in which i have been serving the church of christ a atudcnt and ordained minister it ha loo frequently been my raipoatibiuty to moderate in conflicu thai were disturbing the life of congregation and from these deeply dlttreainf circumstance i have drawn few conclusion which i want to share with readers of this column it is unfortunately true and abo possible that as a minister friend said to toe just yesterday in the church a nobody can quickly become a somebody by virtue ot talent personal magnetism eagerness lo wield influence and control decisions an agg person can rapidly become the leader of a militant group within a congregation and even become ifl the minds of the rankandfile members of that pariah group aaor important than ihe clergyman or the governing body chosen by the congregation or let in their place by superior authorities or by the enabling grace of god which create in a mill of woman deepened consciousness of blessing received and which impel him lo use hii glftl and talents for godi glory and man enrichment a person may suddenly spring from the shadow of the wing into the limelight of the centre stage so much depend on the motivation and every one of ui who serve in the church must ask ourselves repeatedly i believe whose praise and honour we are working for are we servant of the living god who ha called u out of darkness into hi marvellous light or are we servants of ourselves trying to present an image of greatness by our teal and drive are we seeking to bring other person into an acknowledgement of the lordship of jesus christ or are we seeking personal aggrandizement in which we may roughly or subtly auggeit that they should take their cue from us if we seek the utter we have no right to think of ounetvei u redeemed individuals we are hypocrites concealing under a mask of piety our intention of gaining power and prestige for ou nerves almost all communion teach their confirmee and member that jetu christ himself is the king and head of the church this mean that the church is in the final analysis a chrlttocracya fellowship in which christ governs and rule by the free gift of god guiding spirit democracy of a kind is possible in the church only when all the his church as declared fas scripture and revealed by his spirit i recall that in a toronto church of my own denomination many years ago there was an exceptionally gifted minister who ml having curticulty with ome member of hi session these men undoubtedly felt they were quite justified in disapproving very strongly of the tendency of their spiritual leader to become highly intoxicated on occasion and they brought it rather pointedly to hi attention in a meeting of the session this clergyman acknowledging that this was a problem ti whlm h all have concent invited the elder immediately to engage with him ifl prayer to that they might unitedly ascertain how cod would have them deal with the problem if tome si us are inclined lo find such an incident as this somewhat humorous a i do our chuckling should jvot obscure for us the fact that ihe guidance given by this member of the cloth wai an example of genuine spiritual insight when a man bring into the fellowship of believer tome besetting weakness or an inappropriate and selfish lusting for power or tome other telfterving idolatry it should be a matter of concern thought and prayer to the king and head of the church to discover if possible the best way of dealing with the matter to a not lo destroy an individual and to ruin the peace and harmony of the church this is the living out of the redemptive role of the church of christ and for the proper administration of the parish ii much preferred to expulsion of the sinning individual or excommunication the church detnonttratei its awareness of the lifechanging power of god spirit when conflict within it are resolved effectively and happily we should not be surprised then when some deep unpleatanlnes rocks a parish for evil i always aggressive and seeking to operate in good societies what we should lament is the fact that there is sometimes so little real turning to god for the wisdom and strength necessary to resolve the crisis and to bring good order once more and we all realize i am sure that if the local congregation cannot find ways to end iii conflict hi attempts to influence a world where there are indexible ambitions bitter emnitiei and even more profound and farreaching hypocrisies than in ihe church will be indeed pathetically inadequate church notices mattel mm tvanokl hntfcostal tabhnacu paoc 33 churchill road rev s m thoman pastor
