and a new business starting out in a rat hole he has built a north american market for lutiproduct and has chosen the village of moffat as the base fur ins operations john hammersley onginjlly from st ukeon trent came to canada willi the idea of continuing his ceramics trade and first landed in toronto js general manager of a firm which made dccals for transfer onto pieces of ceramics which gave hem their different patterns he stjrted out working fur this established firm but won went out on ins own and set up shop in the basement of a plumber s store li was like working m a rat hole he said recalling his first canadian business getting fed up with that shop last october he decided to find a larger building and applied to the township of nasvagaweya for help the township combined with christie and woods real fcstatc found him a building in moffat and he moved in to set up delwyn decals one thing youll probably never believe is that 1 travelled nearly 35000 miles in under four months to find out what type of mjrket there is for my ceramic dccals mr hammersley said knowing his market he started to make the decals and now has contract o sell them to ceramics firms alt over canada and the united states basically the decal is used by ceramics firms to decora lc heir pottery in place of the expensive fund painting they are applied by hand and when dry are glazed in a kiln to make them permanent all kinds of patterns can be made into dccals jnd in mr hammerslcys case most of his designs come from a design house back in stokeontrent although he does admit to putting through one a month himself the firm at present puts out 3000 sheets of dccals per week which add up to a phenomenal sum of 1 00 000 dccals per week starting off a design is approved and then pictures arc taken of the design one for each color and this picture is reduced to the size of the actual decal needed the designs ire then multiplied and placed on a presensitued sheet of thin plastic the plastic and combined patterns are then exposed to a might light and the pittern is transferred 16 the sheet 6f plastic it is taken out the unsensitied areas washed off with a high pressure stream of wjter and hen hardened from there the plastic is placed on a silk screener where the pattern is once again transferred this time onto a iheet of nylon then the actual pattern can be transferred onto he decal paper which is called thermaftat paper the decal itself is covered by a smelly lacquer lo keep the colors together and he whole sheet it taken to special racks to dry the paper it gummed and when it it placed in water the decals can easdy slide off with the lacquer keeping he different colors together mr hammerileyt plant none of two in canada now producing the decals and he plant to expand hit operations by bringing in designers from england to wbrk in the plan w moffat he also plans to get into the wallpaper nunufictunngend of the business toon youre never hill in thii business he said you have to go out to find the market ilnce people always want something new we are putting out new patterns every week crediting his bank manager and a pottery dealer in hamilton with his success m this country john hammerdey is well on the way to putting an international industry in moffat the final touch on a piece of pottery it the addition of the docal mr hammertloy very easily slip a flowered decal on the col too pot and says that it is made permanent by firing it in e kiln e process which hit plant does not do staff photos it would probably be ok to lower the voting age to
