were several british and colonial ebldiersbut the canadians were in the majority the esta- minets seemed to be quite popular centres for the soldiers through the open doors i saw them sitting around tables with glasses and bottles of wine trying i presumed simultaneously to quench their thirst and to forget the little pains of their heart whioh they could not satisfy tbe low tile joofed stone brick and stueoo houses were by way of novelty quite interesting the doorsteps and windowsills were ohiselled stone and even the floors of the houses i could see through open doors were large square stones made flat and polished frequently fireplaces were ineasy view from my point of observation for the most part the inhabitants of those- houses did not appear to be any too tidy and children ran about with dirty hands and faces in many instances their olothing was to say the least bad a french cemetery i saw one for the first time after we had gone twelve or fifteen miles along the road is one of the most grotesque things i ever saw in my life so i thought that morning when first my eyes beheld it i have seen many since and find them all to be very tnuoh alike they do not have tbe solid everlasting appear ance which ours with their ever greens and simple yet ornamental marble monuments have these french cemeteries have but little marble unless it be a shrine whioh if there be one is situated not far from the entry gate a first glance at one of these grotesque cemeter ies reveals the colors of black white and purple a closer exam ination shows you that on a stone or white marble base is set to act as a monument of remembrance above the grave of a departed per son dear to other persons a cross of iron whioh is deooroted- in a fashion foreign to canadians with wreaths and other designs made in iron the flowers are represented in glass or some such substance whioh is purple or amethyst in co lor you look about and you find that the entire cemetery is a orowded mass of monuments such as i have desoribed and you notice inscriptions and epitaphs sec in iron letters across the face of the crosses the glistening of the amethyst flowers in the designs strike you as peculiar and awful here and there you will see out flowers laid at the foot of the crosses the french never lose an opportunity of decorating the graves of those departed you have read many a time dur ing the past summer of the ger mans bombing a hospital at a can adian general base in france and now you will read what i have to say about it at least about the hospital some miles farther down the roadway on the side of which i saw my first french cemetery we began to descend a series of hills among jwbioh were a few boors farm- villages these are con sisting of three or four houses with barns etc one or two apple orch ards and many green grain fields finally ahead of us we saw a long large hill showing many patches of bare sand and leading away from the other hills the road turned and led along the level ground not far distant from the large long hill presently we oame to the hospital which later the germans bombed it was a large frame edi fice with a number of wings if i remember correotly there were two stories tp the main ward and the wings there were also a number of smaller out buildings in connec tion with the hospital a beauti ful yard surrounded these build ings not an established lawn and flower garden hut plain walks and simple rows of flowers in that wilderness of hule it did appear beautiful and many a poor wound ed soldier must have felt a plea sure in gazing upon the petite scene when he sat on tbe benches placed against the facade of the big building and dreamed in the sunshine of bis sweetheart and botfie no doubt that many a hubby anil father found a little sunshine steal into his aobing heart as he limped or walked weakly along the path longing to be home once more with hi wife and those sweetfuccd brigbteyed children ho had sadly left behind because of those flowers he felt the sunshine stealing sweetly soft ly into his being in rear of the hospital as 1 have said was the great long sand hill the tops of dome pine trees were visible over the height of this hill there was a wood and some other ridges back behind there so we learned later when not far past the hospital a remark 1 beard made by one of the other oarnpants of the lorry caused me to direct my gaze in an other and opposite direotion what dc you think i saw twas a sight whioh jnade think nrjlionvtaialfftbenttvtaotar of u jopnbib ocupyng agraye among those acreir of very long of graves and cemeteries and besides this we were soldiers and were too willing to carry out our work as soldiers should to think a great deal of any probable serious consequences we were unless it were for a sprinkling of faint hearted onee prepared- to meet the worst at that time we had no idea of tbe locality into which we would go or of the service into whioh we would be placed tbe line of lorries turned off the road we had followed to the left and there followed another road whioh took as in behind tbjs hilly ridges in rear of the hospital there were other hills behind this as i said before and we mounted and deoended these until half a mile farther w entered the base camp on all hands were tents tents and more tents ymca huts catholic clubs and messing halls all frame built in what is known as the adcien style we passed through some of tbe sec tions and finally tbe lorries drew up in a line at the laborpool on the flat plateau like summit of a hill it was then just about one oolookt so after roll call we parad ed to dinner across in the mess hall in the infantry lines then when dinner was over we looked around a little looking down the hill in the direction from which we come i saw the tented aorus tbero and down in the valley on the left was the gare and vide of etaples and on my right ran another or a continuation of the valley on the left and in front of me in whiohrat this particular part was a small woods and sand heaps at tbe back of me was a slight and gradual rising plain of sand whioh was covered with tents and army bpildings and whioh some distance back swooped down to make another valley on the highest part of tbe slope was a large tank oontaining water which i suppose supplied or helped supply the great camp an old fashioned pioturesque windmill was also there i remained at this encampment for a number of days so i will have a few incidents and more scenes to tell and desoribe these i will write for you as soon as time
