across canada and on the steamer we iidn t have a chance then travelling up river was the same except at chung kinir here on christ man eve i went with santa onus to visit the w m s chi ncse girls home we cnlcrel a room in the centre of which was a large christmas tree beautifully trim med with t nscl and candles now you will beith nking why that is just like canada but i sten around- that tree hopping lumping and singing were little people wearing long troua era and short coats with bra da of hair down their backs these were chinese girts ohl if only you could have seen their eyes pop as santa came into the room he carried a huge pack on his back with both arms full of stockings after the girts had sung a little song this was in chi nese so i can t tell you what it about santa began to unpack each received her little packet she over to a comer and opene 1 it up secretly then brought t out to shov everyone one little girl brought over a tiny doll about three inches long whose eyes would close to show rae this pleased her immensely i think each one got a testament and a t n doll or some little thing and they were all so delighted then santa left so i did too i wonder if you know who fiilcd santa a pack well some little girh and boys in miss on bands in canada and if they could have sten the joy on those little girls faces i m sun ay would have been well rtpa d for i was talk ng about going to sun day school wasnt i well on the university campus where i am there are both women and men students but many more of the latter i heard a teacher say the other day that the women have a much keener intellect than the men that is one way china resembles canada eh girts each of these nave their separate sun lay school services in chinese of course which 1 cant understand many of notes and comments to have one this summer to see if 1 can learn a little chinese the stu dents in this way earn money for the next term i suppose of j denng if there inn t a sunday school for the little girls and boys there ie in the city but as there arc no chil dren on the campus so no sunday school i havent had a chance to e any in the city yet this is the kite season here sees boys of all ages even students of the university flying them a short time ago they had a contest on the campus there were three p rites prettiest highest and most pull the one which won the first was a large butterfly about five feet across the wings they also have them in the ipe of large birds pennants ana ikes the second was so high one could hardly see it and the lost one in the shape of a snake w th over two hundred segments had a pull of forty pounds this had a double card to hold it now dont you wish you could come here and fly kites well 1 m afraid you wouldn t either there ore realty very few children who can afford them in place of fly ng kites the majority are working we see little girls and boys like dorothy mimms and tc tdy ar nold carrying loads of bricks earth and vegetables etc now there is an addition boing built on the school and boys of ten and twelve are laying bricks and carrying mortar and lum ber just here you might 1 ke to know how the lumber is cut they have no sawmills instead the large tree trunks ore carried into the compound by men then two men with a saw cut them lengthwise think of the tnne it takes to raw one board but they have no other way yet every day one sees little girls and boys here on the campus with bam boo rakes trying to get a little dead grass or twigs to heat their nee very often the tittle girls have babies on their backs as an example of how hard it is for the average chinese to it sufficient to eat his politest term have you eaten yctt just as we would say how do you do nearly every time one goes into the city one sees little children begging gener ally they have hardly any clothes on and those rags sometimes they have large sores on their bodies or a leg or arm off yet we can very irely do anything to help beggary a profession here the parents maim their children so they will pro cure more money can you imagine the plight of these little ch idren it is terrible you boys and girls dont know how thankful you ought to be that you were born in canada and not china but wouldn t you 1 ke to help them and you arc because this is where part of your missionary money comes i wonder which class will be asked this time wishing you success in the com ng emily caldwhl training j avian bnya the toronto star weekly recently gave an illustrated article descriptive of the four hundred acre farm at georgetown where jewish constituting a serious grievance ev dently even in canada the human ele ment must be taken into cons id era tion in the administration of just ce and human judgment is sometimes very fallible would abolish cadets the hamilton conference of the un ted church on monday may 24th wen on record as favoring the de militarization of ail physical drill in canada especially that in force in the schools it urged the govern ment to abolish cadet training in tht lucational systems introduced by rev m e conron and j m dcnycs the resolution which dedicate ourselves to its achievement wc undertake to explore and accept all roads of courage and wisdom wh ch lead to the goal of demilitarix ng the mind as well as eradicating from the heart all roots of bitterness an i strife therefore we beuevc that the training of our young men for war a contrary to the spirit of christ and be it resolved that we take steps to discontinue all the officers training corps in the colleges of the united church and that we urge the government to abolish cadet training in the public educational system ot the dominion mr conron who said he served overseas for four years and rose from the rank of private to that of cap- lam thought ne was qualified to speak tgarding war the argument that iilitary drill made for obedience fell to the ground mr conron said when put to an actual test the only obedience it made for he continued was obedience to brass buttons and tin hats and not to the great ideals of peace for which the empire stands mr conron also attacked the argu ment that such drills were physical and not military the fact was ahat such instruction in the schools was all under the supervision of the dc krtmcnt of militia and defense the itructors had a military mind he said and sought to color the
