noted es in all departments of human enteronse and effort statcsaien churchmen tncn of letters men of affairs soldiers artists and men of science bo that in glancing over thi family rodhajs one meets an array of eminent nanies second to but few in the annals of their native land only the briefest account of the origin and earlier history of the les lies can be given here with some ac count of the achievements of half a dozen or so of the most prominent members of the family among the documents and authorities at the command of the compiler of this ac count there are two different dis tricts given as the first home tarn tory of the leshea the first trace of this scottish house is found be twocn the years 1177 and 1199 ad 750 years ago when david earl of huntingdon and the darioch pro nounced gtme brother of king william the lion granted a charter to one malcolm of the land of tv lesslyn now written leslie a wild pariah of aberdeenshire another account says that the name leslie is derived from the name of a dts trict in fifeshire a county farther south in scotland than aberdeen the most reliable authority cham tiers encyclopaedia gives- abe rbeen shire as the- original home of the fam ily an i this wntcr adheres to that as it is his own native shire or county and the parish of leslie he is familiar with for but one parish lies between the parish of leslie and his own na live parish of rayne to the east of it this establishes the antiquity and original home of the family the home from which they derived their name and it should interest all the members of the large family found now all the world over to know that the present male representative or chief of the clan leslie is sir norman rod enck alexander donald leslie eighth baronet c b e of wardcs a fine and beautifully situated estate and mansion house in the parish of leslie which this writer has often seen to follow the fortunes of even a few of the most prominent members and branches of the family would take many many pages suffice it to say that the name occupied a fre quent place on the pages of scottish history all down the centuries and the pages of the histories of other countries as well for during the 17th century there were at one time three generals of the name in service in as many different european coun tries in 1296 norman dc leslie was appointed sheriff of the county of aberdeen sir andrew de leslie was k eminent in 1620 as an asscrter of c independence of scotland of his four sons george became the ances tor of the leslie of balqubain pro nounced bawhine from whom dfr acended alexander first earl of le- ven another son became the mas ter of rothes from whom descended i a line of dukes and rothes and bo i all down the line i to particuunxe i shall tell a little about half a doion leslies all eminent in their callings and achievement and then deal with a few families nearer our own times among whom or near whom 1 lived in my early first then comes john leslie rc roman catholic bishop of ross a distinguished statesman and historian and a detotod adherent of the most beautiful but also most unfortunste of women mary queen of scots he was born just 400 years ago and lived to the age of 70 ears years filled in manhood with the most strenuous activ ty to comfort cheer and save his queen he was a sturdy champion in early reformation days of the roman catholic religion and held high d spute in defence of the game with the greats scot reformer john knot he was more than once committed to prison in his seal for the eause of his queen and of his re bgion he wrote a history of scotf land in- latin up to hu own time and many other learned books he rose to the dignity of archbishop of rouen france before his death near bros i is in 169t i of a very different faith wap charles leslie alsoa noted church man- but of the protestant belief i and also a not d author one of whose books a snort and easy method f with profit this charles leslie wi son of s leslie of baltfubsin uic father living to the great age of 100 years and he too was like his more illustrious son a churchman but of the reformed or anglican church charles was born in ireland in 1660 getting hefodu cation in trimly col icpf dublin he was a great oppon ent of catholicism so much to that he had to leave ireland to live in england where he for a time studied taw he ardent protestant as lie was strongly espoused the stewart cause and refused to take the oath of allegiance to william and mary at the revolution of 1g8b and so was de prived of his church living for roost of the remainder of his life he de voted himself to the writing of books lin defence of the christian religion receiving the highest praise iron such mm ai lr bamlirl juhiibon acuten aa of hl to scotlan i to lead the forces of the covenanters against the i capo tic forces of k ng charles it would take long to tell of all his doings in the interests of his own and his fol lowers faith but during his whole career he rained tbe highest praise for his bkillfut leadership he wasn t nl ways successful for he was often overruled against his will to pursue courses of which he did not approve ho died in 1661 at an advanced age and his descendants still hold the barldora of lev en next in order comes sir john les lie a celebrated mathematician and professor of natural philosophy in the university of edinburgh he was of the fifeshire leslies and of hum ble origin but rose to fame through hia rich endowment of intellect an i determination to become a scholar he was bom in 17gg and early at traded the attention of the family pastor si being a lad of parts and promise this preacher lent the lad books which he so mastered that he was able to enter st andrew s uni versity at the early age of 13 he was appointed tutor of two young americans who had come to scotland for their education and later went with his charges to their home in the state- of virginia where he bpcnt a year he soon became known to the eminent men of science of his day and the members of several learned societies he did much for the ad van cement of science and invented many ingenious instruments writing learned books on sotral sciences in 1819 he became professor of natural philosophy n edinburgh university apd wrote so manj books that it would take a sheet of this paper to contain even their names he re lived knighthood in 1s32 an i died ti nc year next an 1 fifth on the list comes charles robert leslie oorn it 794 and one of the most popular of eng lish painters his parents were amer leans showing that the leslie family had that early found their way to this side of the atlantic in fact the parents of this famous artist may have been the ancestors of some of the canadian leslies be- that as it may this painter of american parcn tage did not stay long in the united states he found more appreciation and scope for his talents m england where most of hia great pictures were i produced this leslie was not only a noted painter but also the author of popular books on his profeasii besides being the writer of the i of constable a great artist of his uroe he died it might be said with brush in hand in 1869 last but not least on the list of eminent leslies whose careers briefly recorded here cqmes thomas edward cliffe leslie one of the most original and eminent economists of the last century he belonged to that branch of the big family that had set tled in ireland being oorn at wex ford in 1927 among his ancestors were that accomplished prelate john leslie bishop of raphoc the father of an eminent leslie dealt with here charles leslie author of the famous book a short and easy method with the deists cliff c leslie o father was a clergyman of the english church and the famous son got the best of advantages in education through ibis writings on economic questions and subjects bearing upon the science of political economy he became ac quainted with many of the leading men of his day including john stuart mill who recognised tn leslie one of the most profound thinkers on his i subject m his day he became an ardent member of the coleden club a devoted admirer of cobdcn and bright and a pronounced free tra dcr ho died in 1882 in the prime of his powers but left behind him a body of solid writings upon his sci ence that has been a inured by all lents of political econ omy ever since these half doxen of men mentioned here by na means exhausts the list of eminent members of the leslie family they arc given as specimens of what the race has produced at tho i top of the tree in different lines of human enterprise and noble achieve menu their eminent examples should excite members of the family today to make the most of their time talents and opportunities to show that the race is not degenerating no doubt the men mentioned were largely endowed by nature but natural en dowment without persistent contin ual and well directed personal effort will attain to little and lead nowhere these men and many others of the rate did not bury their talents or hide their lights under a bushel be it re mombered that let our talents b many or few we will all be called strictly to account for the use we have made of them the writer of the foregoing notes may be allowed to close with a few words indicating his intimacy and knowledge of some of the members of the widespread leslie family he maysay tnat here in canada he has been fairly intimate with a score or so of them for more than fifty years with their descendant in fact he had throe of them for a t rti under him in his school in the hamlet of shiloh eramosa township and for one full year 187g he boarded and lodged in one of their homes and lived alongside of them for several kara and later still a closer intimacy s anaen for we now have had a leslie three years for a dauahterln law with her two bngbt baby girls iir grandchildren in whom the leslie lood mtnglrs with 6ur own and
