your subscription peter rice and joe pawling peter rice and joe pawling country neighbor of mine represent two com mon type of men in their relation to animal peter 1 just joe u kind another type all too common l the inconsiderate or cruel man but i am not considering that type at the mom ent peter rice owns a hone and cowa they are reasonably well vested in hi younger days he woa something of a sportsman he used to break bird dog and guide hunting parties in our woods he hat always had a dog or two about his place and yet though hi association with animals has been long and intimate i believe he ha no real feeling for them a wounded partridge arouse in him no sympathy of tan x have seen him repulse his dog when the latter came begging for a care there i little room for sen timent toward animal in peters nature on the other hand though i have known him to be harsh toward ani mals when angry he is not inhumane he believes as a matter of principle in giving them ft square deal one day i taw him throwing off part of a load of cordwood on the way up a hill the horse was pulling iturdlly but peter said its too much it aint fair to the boss i think peter rloe may be ere- dlted with a sense of justloe toward animals joe pawling is i believe a man of genuine if concealed sentiment he is typical old yankee countryman shrewd humorous and rough he is not always delicate in speech and i cannot say that he is a man of re fined bneding in matters of senti ment he la reticent i have never heard him express any fondness for animal and yet i believe he wo born with a fellowfeeling for them joe cares for my cow dinah when we close the farmhouse and go away in the winter and she always come back to me sleek and fat and gentle in the spring x know she has not been abused one day last august joe drove down past my house and stopped for ft word of friendly gossip uy cow was staked out in the rowen not far from the road old dinah looking pretty good said joe turning to gaae at her then he chuckled when we come by she looked and looked if she could talk shed say i know them folks by them folks he meant himself and hi old mare and in the word i caught a revelation of joes attitude toward his animals they are all folks with him i rode down with him on the seat of his farm wagon one day through a rough and little used woods road we came to a very steep pitch and i won dered whether we hadnt better dis mount and lead the mare but joe went on tsriklng unconcernedly hold ing the reins slack in his hands grasped the side of the seat expecting any minute to be thrown out but the intelligent animal braced her feet and hgulgged safely down well said i as we reached the bottom she negotiated that pretty cleverly yas drawled joe i let her go her own gait in them places she knows how bettern i do there was complete sympathy and undentmndlng between joe pawling and his mare and it struck me that there wa something more in joe simple creed than a sense of jiutlce there was something approaching brotherhood i am inclined to think that this sense of brotherhood with the animals is a rare as a genuine sense of hu moiir you know how it is with hu mor not one person in fifty will ad mlt that he lacks it and yet we know how few really possess that roadlness to grasp the subtle whimsicalities of life and speech which characterise sense of humor of the more refined type so it is with the feeling for anl mal and yet how few actually possess that sense of brotherhood with the so- called lower creatures which render them quickly sympathetic to animal joy and animal suffering the gradual increase of this feeling of wsponslbulty and brotherhood be tween men and animals is one of the triumphs of our christian civilisation and yet how far wa have still to go how few people feel with the wounded bird the trapped fox the caged lion the overladen horse they have to be preached to before they can appreciate the wrong we habitually do to ani mal even our naturalists seldom possess this feeling their attitude is scien tific rather than personal one may search thoreaus writings in vain for an expression of real kinship with an imal- he wa interested in squirrels and birds in much the same imper sonal way a in the current of the river the toe on the pond they were alike fascinating natural phenomena to him in john burroughs and john mulr on the other hand we get a sense of an entirely different attitude burroughs loved the birds as friends uulr pitied the snakes because he said they were loved only by their creator i ometlma think that it u useless to attempt to inculcate this feeling for animal in adults at least it is as difficult as to try to educate a sense of humor that doe not exist in chil dren perhaps it is possible but if we can preach justice to animals even though without love we may ac complish aoniethlng if the day ever comes when no animal 1 treated un fairly when man no longer exercises hi prerogative of tyranny over them we shall have taken a long stride to ward real clvuuatlon after we have made universal the old testament ideal of justice perhaps then we may hope to do something with the new testament ideal of love walter a dyer in our dumb animals the new year 11m nw yenr find evory one more or iru dlmtatlfled and tome dlmcoui aucd mal unhappy bo tnony of our rcxolutlons of a year ago have eottur to nought and so many or the itleal then before u are still imreallxed that wo find much omtortuntty for lamentation if wp could but be uu- ftatlsflthl without bclnif unhappy or dlftcouragnl we would count it bleumhl duxulit for in ihl uncomfortable manger ha been bom many n lioly thoughtchild wlioiic coming haii meant farreaching regeneration nd kalvatlon but ihl holy discontent cannot exist wlacre tliere luu been a complete nbandonmi nt of every position taken n year ago it is more than doubtful if one can avoid unlutpplneu and a pessimistic view of the new year if lie stand at it beginning where he can we nothing but the collapse of all hi hope and purpose of twelve months nliice to be comfortably dissatisfied we must liave achieved something though wo liave lost more we must nave kept our resolutions in part though we have broken them in part ue must have followed after our ideals though we have come not up on them nothing can be more unrortunale than that we should bci the impression that the new year u purposely given that we may lightly forget the faith lessness of the past the spirit that nally forget the failures of 1m will surely esteem lightly the resolutions jf tlie first day of itrjo nn the poss- uor of such spirit ha no right to be jomrortable on ttie other hand those who have held themselves responsible through tlie year just gone for the resolutions made at its opening who have per sistently provoked themselves to the keeping of them who liave refused to exonerate themselves from blame in the matter of failure and wlio do not count it a little thing that tiiey have failed so often or once have a right to be happy and hopeful as they atep out into a new year though they be dissatisfied with their achievement they have not attained neither are made perfect but they have followed after the dishonest trifler with the resolutions and ideals of 1028 ha no right to be happy at the beginning of utto but honest purposeful effort to redeem these pledges need liave brought no remorse s w p in the new outlook is it pair after giving the matter very care ful thought we have arrived at the conclusion that there is one law con cerning highway traffic that is not en tirely a fair one and that i the law that says if farm animal get out on the road and any damage result from their being there the owner of the animals is fully responsible for such damages incurred we have ar rived at the conclusion that thla i un fair to the farmers no farmer want his animals to be on the roadside they might wander away might be impounded and cause trouble for the owners therefore it is to his advan tage to keep his animal in his fields and the farmer does that to the best of his ability let us give two exam ples from our own neighborhood on farmer through whose land the rail way passes turned several liorses into a field at a late hour of the night a train coming along scared the animal and in their fright they tore into a fence and got out of the field onto the highway the following morning the farmer learned of a car accident near his farm and found that it had been caused by an autolst striking one of his horses which wa on the highway the liorse was not seriously injured but the car which hit the ditch was badly smashed although the occu pants escaped the farmer wa held responsible and wa forced to jjaythe damages in another instance a man called on a farmer one evening and when leaving the place overlooked closing the gate some horses wan dered out on to the road and a car coming along in the early hours of the morning struck a horse and killed it and the car was badly damaged this farmer not only suffered the loss of a valuable horse but also had to hand over the amount for repairing the car it will be noticed that practically all these accidents caused by animal occur on the road at night of course it may be said that the animals can not be seen then but everybody knows that at night when the traffic 1 lighter a great deal more speeding is done on the road and in many cases the cause of the accidents 1 just that it isnt altogether fair to the far mer to be soaked for damages his an mats caused on the highway when they get there through no caues or ne glect on hi part but for some reason beyond hi control kincardine re viewreporter liquor profits in ontario reach haslmm the province of ontario has a aur surplus remained after full provision lng october 31 1028 it ha been an nounced by hon j d uontcith pro vincial treasurer in his customary pre- sesslonal statement ur budget es timate of last session profit on the actual sale of liquor revenue was der ived to the extent of i7j2sa00 this amount is m42ao0o greater than that of 1027 when the new act operated only five month liquor permits con tributed tsosjoo to the treasury with fines imposed under the new taw the treasury earned altogether approxi mately tu29000 from operation of the ontario liquor control act ordinary revenue for the year was iu4ivf and ordinary expenditures m1w000 in both cases ur llon- lelth reports that expectation were ceeded in 1027 ordinary revenue amounted to tmmooo and ordinary expenditure to w5o47001 the outstanding advance in revenue was registered in the attorneygener als department which admlslter the liquor law here the increase was 2jm0000 over the figures for last year in the prime minister- department revenue amounted to s270l000 an in crease of m50o0o in water rentals tan increase of 9170000 and a refund of 2108000 to the government by the ontario hydro- electric power com mission for advances made by the pro vince at various times since 1000 for preliminary work and other operations incidental to the esubltshment of the system hog cholera has made its appear ance in peel county a herd owned by ohas hunter had to be destroyed to prevent a recurrence of the disease which la incurahl ups and downs of life homk extraordinary cankh or himien romtunkh there died recently in guildford workhouse a man named jam cut- tttrmhi pratt vivo some fifty years uo bought tlie whou of the land on whlrh johannesburg now stumli an urea of 18000 acre for t2a0 nayn aiinwer he unfortunately wan de- harm from mvjoylng the gigantic for- itine which would have been hln for when the boer republic wa declared hi property wa confiscated by the new government and lie returned to england penniless that land today u worth at least 20000100 here is another story of an extra ordinary bargain in land in the flf- tlea or last century a number of texas frontiersmen came to tlie town of corsleana on a trading expedition and had a merry evening at two next morning one of litem awoke jwlth a terrible thirst but there wa no water in the room and lie could not find lfny putting his head out- of hie win dow ike saw tome men asleep in tlie yard and called out begging them to bring him some water but tliey paid no attention at last lie yelled out one of you fellows give me a drink and ill give you 320 acres of land r this aroused one of tlie sleepers who called back that hed be hanged if hed move for a beggarly 320 acres the man above raised hi offer to a whole section that 1 840 acres and at last the one below fetched up a bucket full of water in those days a texan word was his bond and next morning the 840 acres was duly made over by deed to the not very good samaritan the latter took possession and before his death sold the land for t30000 it u now still more valuable the increase in the value of cana dian lands has been enormous a british army officer travelled to cal gary in the year 1887 with the then president of the canadian pacific railway noticing a beautiful site near the bow river seven miles from calgary he bought nearly three square miles paying 80 cent per acre phlrtyflve years later that land was being sold at prices up to 1000 per acre truly the oolden west some extraordinary case of sud den fortune were provided by the re cent florida land boom a tampa newsboy named d p davis saved 8100 and gambling with it in real es tate at ulaml turned it into 150000 he then bought an island in tampa bay added to its area by dredging built a bridge connecting it with the mainland and sold out for 818000000 one of the richest men in mexico maximilian damm a german by birth began as a clerk went into busi ness as a storekeeper and in course of trade took over an old and apparently worthelx silvermine for a bad debt of 878 he found a new lode in the old mine and for a long time mao 3800000 a year out of it but land i not the only foundation for fortune mr abraham white or new york holds what is probably a worlds record by making 150000 for tlie expenditure or a penny stamp the united states government naked for tenders for a large luu or bonds no deposit being required mr white then o clerk in a ttockbrokers office in new york made a tender for part of these bonds ills bid was accepted and next day he dis posed of these bonds allotted to him in wau street at a profit of 180000 he then formed the abraham white bonding co and more recently bid for the whole of a new issue of 40000000 of new york city bonds it wa another mart american marcus j waterman who bought 0600 shares of chicago it great stock for fifty cents a share a week later the shares stood at 530 and mr waterman sold his 3000 purchase for 135000 a profit of this site in one week is pretty good going the auctionroom is full of roman ces years ago a provincial lad atten ded a sale and bought a box of mis cellaneous articles for thltryslx shill ings at the bottom he round two large eggs which as he could not identify them he took to the famous auctioneer mr stevens they turned out to be eggs of the great auk which has been extinct since 1847 one sold for 280 guineas the other slightly cracked fetched 180 guineas a young man strolling through northneet saw a saucer or old coins in a shop window they were mostly oeorgian pennies and halfpennies and were priced at a penny each quite a much a they seemed worth he looked them over and found one which though as blank s the rest seemed heavier he bought this took tt home cleaned it and found it to be a gold medal or the seventeenth cent ury which was afterwards sold for t200 another fortunate person was the london collector who bought an old deed for eight shillings at a bookstall in marylebone lena when examined this proved to bear the signature of ouy fawke there is only one other signature of this conspirator in exis tence and the value of this docu ment is estimated at anything up to ci 0000 the old family cat out of the realm of childhood memories there are none more ln- stlmately treasured than those of the old family cat and her kittens
