sotmi time ago drawn to a kw5- cessful close some may wish that it luul continued longer had thu been doue some of tlie essays might contln ue indefinitely some might evrn be ultlioul end during our four days stay in toron to we not only liad uu opportunity to see the very best crops and live block that are produced in this county but we were able through tlie courtesy of various firms to inspect different manufacturing firms and commercial crgonutatlons thus seeing farourselves tlie interdependence that exists be tween farm and factory we luul a royal time in more ways than one probably to some of tlie boys the trip was regarded as a holi day and a chance to have a good time but it woo really more than this these annual pilgrimages as premier pergusorl has called them have al ready borne fruit in stimulating inter est in live stock judging work and it is certain that they will have a pow erful influence not only in elevating the status of the live stock industry but in promoting more efficient form ing methods generally the lodging accommodations in the ford hotel proved very satisfactory the government provided us with many forms of amusement but different occasions in the hotel we had plenty of amusement which was really not provided by the govern ment our official programme opened with the government banquet in hart house hart house is unique in uni versity buildings and the great hall is the finest thing of its kind on the continent we all had the privilege of shaking hands with the hon john 8 martin and hon o howard pergu- son and it was a great honor indeed after we had satisfied our appal very inspiring addressee were delivered by these two honorable gentlemen and by the hon dr h j cody anyone who left hart house without a good many lasting impressions mutt have been dreaming entirely three different visits were made to the royal winter pair it is the greatest agricultural winter pair in the world other fairs may be strong er in certain departments but none embraces the whole field of agricul ture in so complete and thorough i manner and none is better equlped with accommodation both for exhibi tor and visitors the royal winter pair is young in years but it has pass ed from an enterprise to an established institution while the royal is primarily a live stock show there is much else to he seen the flower show itself beautiful beyond description exhibits were there of the various branches of the different departments of agricul ture one of the most striking of the educational exhibits was that of the dominion live stock branch here the importance of our export trade particularly great britain was feat ured and the story of what canadian formers saw on their trip by means of pictures and a loud speaker it woj evident that people were not only in terested in but impressed by what they saw and heard most of the classes of live stock were extra well filled bo keen was the competition in many classes that potential winners were not even in the money in some cases indeed a worthy list of prise winners might have been picked from the ent ries left after al the awards had been passed out the excellence of the ex hibits the wealth displayed in crops and live stock and the enormity of it all constitute a wonderful tribute to canadian agriculture but the applica tion of all the lessons taught depends upon canadian men and women and the intermingling is after all the royals greatest contribution to con- ido at both evening performances a parade of prise winners took place in the judging arena the parade on the first evening of the pair must have been a sharp contrast to the others on that occasion the parade was of the winning junior partners while on the other evenings the parade was of prise winning horses and cattle a forenoon tour of the union stock yards and packing plants was made great surprise was shown at the else of the yards and the service which they must give to farmers in general the packing plants were also busy to see the amount of meat on hand and the rate in which it is slaughtered one would not think there could surely be any shortage of meat it is plain to be seen that farmers and meat packers must work together if real success is to be obtained it seems lmposslbel that farmers could use all the machinery we saw at the masseyharrls plant the various departments were turning out thous ands upon thousands of parts for all kinds of farm implements the big gest attraction were the moulding and the dropforging these two operations were so different from our ordinary work that our leaders could acarcely get us post them one could not help being overcome with a sense of the weakness of human muscle com pared with the power of modern ma chinery it is hard to realise that a little over two hours were spent in our tour of this plant without once going government and of the different l dr o roves of partus speaking in elora recently nude u clear that he la strongly opposed to capital punish ment in explaining his conviction dr groves insisted that the judge who oonderaned the man to death the jury the crown and all of us who con curred in such a punishment wen fly- trig in the foot of che sixth onmrnsm a our tour of the mail order depart ment of the t eaton co ltd proved to be a remarkable event the com pany provided guides to show the dif ferent groups the organisation neces sary for handling mall orders quick ly and efficiently we were shown from floor to floor following with no little interest the various steps each order passes through from the receipt of the order to the packing mailing and despatch by special arrangement with the poet office department only under efficient management and a spirit of cooperation among the em ployees could this concern be car ried on by any means successfully surely if farmers as a whole would on ly adopt more efficient methods and also some of this cooperative spirit and organisation they would be mak ing a lasting improvement the banquets given us by the t eaton oo and the root simpson co respectively occupied a place of out standing importance on our pro gramme to say that one of them was better than the other would not be doing justice to either they were both of the highest quality possible at the close of each banquet a vote of thanks was moved und seconded by different hoys in the party the way in which it was done would convince anyone that judging was not the only acotvnpllshment which these boys were taken for a drive around the city by motor ooacltes as guests of the city of toronto something like twenty- two coacltes were required for the trip so it can be seen how much trouble and expense it must have been to carry out such a splendid uvetit nor were we finished our sightsee ing yet many of the boys took advan tage of tlte oiyer of the toronto board of trade to view the city from their board rooms tills made more evident then ever tlie courtesy which was shown us wherever we went it would seem there must have been something between tlie different firms and or- ganuatlom which entertained us which made each one try to use us in iter than tlie oilier i consider ureat credit la due to tlie mcerit und official wlio orgunlsed and carried out tills event of more importance turrliaiw is tlie person or lierumii wlio flrxt bfgan thiw move ment the frlcndithlpa alone that were inaujf the sun brought the final day of amusement we were al lowed an extra hour to selep relieving tlte elevators in the hotel considerably no doubt some of us resembled hum ans that were drawn through knot holes on the last day probably caus ed by sleepless nights and excessive headaches also occasional swellings of tlie head drifted our way my trousers lost their crease however this trip has planted t broader intellect in regard to my fu ture succeu in farming the speeches that were given by nationally known men have left a print that cannot easily be effaced and without hesita tion i can assure my readers that uicrc u no other way that will bring tlie producer manufacturer and con sumer in closer coordination and co- peratlon than to prepare a trip of this kind for the junior farmer or on tario i thank the provincial govern ment in closing my camiiosltlon for l heir kindness making this trip paut- ibte for me our tour of the parliament build ings was a change from our previous tours occupying the seats in the leg islature proved to be something which had never bean dreamed of until this my trip- u the royal whiter pair dy joseph rput r r 3 georgetown every hour grew more more excit ing until tlie train hod arrived i hurried into the coach and we were soon on our way to toronto i could perceive that new construction work was in progress in some places and completed in oilier before i arrived in toronto tlie trip hod aroused con siderable interest in connection with the development of canadian enter prises we arrived at the new union ela tion about five oclock this enormous building is one of torontos finest structures prom this station we were courteously guided to the new pord hotel at this place we were pre sented with badges programmes booklets and a key to our room it was a prodigy to notice how the officials made their discrimination between the boys from the form and the city about seven thirty after our registra tion we were due at the hart house for a banquet however we were de layed some on account of the difficulty in assembling the five hundred guests into groups the famous hart house of gothic and roman architecture is most superior achievement rival ing in beauty and crofuinanshlp with any building in the worltl here we shook hands with premrfr ferguson and hon john 8 martin both of these men gave instructive speeches after the banquet we formed groups and were soon back to the pord hotel after a very satisfying breakfast on wednesday morning we marched in groups lo the union stock yards at these yards we studied the different classes of animals which were sold on that day we also learned how the yards were supervised before our luncheon sponsored by the meet packers association we had the pri vilege of inspecting the swifts abba- tours receiving a thorough knowledge in regard to the disposal of our lmals at the luncheon we were addressed by several prominent men representing various firms the president of the canadian meat packers association gave an exceedingly interesting talk in reference to the most profitable type of animal to breed for producer and meat packer shortly after one oclock we secured special street cars for the money harris implement factories upon en tering this factory i at once compared the quiet farm life with that of the workmen performing their doily duties in this clomorus buildings roaring fires that melt the hardest of iron pounding and welding machines that are capable of designing the most de licate ports used in our implements after a refreshing supper sponsored by the massey harris co we were en tertained by a humorist followed by an instructing motion picture in con nection with farming thu picture was taken on eastern and western canadian farms for a short period we all participat ed in drowning any silence that might prevail by exercising our lungs in singing and yelling those who were not completely exhausted left for the coliseum at the royal winter fair the winter pair woo officially open ed by premier uackenxie king af ter the opening we had the opportuni ty of seeing foremost horse jumpers compete for enviable prises the opening however was not com plete until the five hundred guests had marched in groups around the coli seum amid applauses we then form ed groups outside the arena before marching to the hotel where we re tired for the evening the next morning being thursday proved to be mild especially after walking every floor in the t eaton company store in this vast store we spent most of the forenoon taking glimpses of their products on display about ten oclock we left again for the royal winter pair arenas and until luncheon was served we were interest ed in the various animals shown after testing my appetite in coles restaurant i suggested to the group or boys i was with that we have a con test in judglngotrtaln classes of ani mal the contest proved not only amusing but also instructive in this way we spent the large part of the afternoon about ave oclock the boys were assembled outside the main en trance awaiting orders from the group commanders our next journey led us back to the t eaton lunch room for a banquet many prominent men at tended this elaborate supper speak ers such as john i christie gave in structing addresses on this occasion the medals won by different contest ants for judlng various classes of ani mals were presented after the pre sentation we were entertained at the pantages theatre before retiring at the ford hotel we ate breakfast at the usual time on friday morning at the hotel af ter eating we marched to the parlia ment buildings where we were es corted through the most important sections of these buildings we were taken to the seats in which the mem bers of the parliament sit an employ er the government explained any feature that we desired to know in connection with the mojiaegment of political affairs in connection with the province the photographers were busy about nine oclock getting ready to capture our picture in the meantime about sixteen busses were summoned to drive us around the city as their guests thu was a most interesting feature of the day on thu tour we viewed cen tree of note such as rosedale high park and sunnyslde about eleven oclock we arrived at the royal falr collseum from that time we were busy inspecting exhibits after an ap petising dinner at coles restaurant we again endeavoured to examine the various exhibits shown by reputable men and in thu way comparatively all the afternoon was spent shortly after five oclock we seated in the street cars which were due at simpsons store before six clock simpsons like eatons gave us a magnificent banquet to our honour in their palm room dr montelth iiuirh iioim nin emit ix sir
