of tha early regiment we must supplement the hit of halton men who served in lft0 during tha red river rtebelllon- robt bliooby and david dolg or stewuttown u well as sergt tarry and andrews of oakvllle took nan hi tha campaign blscoby who held a oommlsslon in tha stewarttown com pany stubwquettuy anllstad in tha and ufa ouards with which fsmoua eorps ha took part in tha battle of tel el keber in tha egyptian campaign completing his service in tha life ouards ha went to south africa and anlistad in tha cape uountad rifles one of the most useful and plthureaque forces in tha empire a force whow work paiwjeued that of tha royal northwest uountad pojlo in tha ear ly days his servioa in south africa included the boer war in which ha waa wounded i regret that x have no record of his eompanonislnarnu from halton on will all those in arrears kindly let us have the amount of their sub- scriotionatonce tha red river fmedluon but their service was no doubt meritorious and it is a safe inference that tha man from halton bald up their and to tha satisfaction of colonel wolseley and his staff but this chapter has to do with lt colonel wm allan of acton and his time a period or service in the halton regiment of twentyfour years the last nine as officer command ing probably no officer aver served in tha halton regiment who had more in fluence on his own time and for many years after than colonel allan of ac ton he was not merely a command ing officer who had served in tha regi ment from subaltern to officer oom- nianding he was a tradition and his robust ufa and robust actions have bean tha subject of many interesting conversations among tha older offic ers while tha younger have listened as if to tha saga of soma nona hero whow life and exploits fired tha im agination and challenged emulation there had been a sergeant in one of tha highland corps in tha imperial service the argyle and sutherland illgwsndars and with such a back ground was sir oracle whow judg ments and declilons on all matters pertaining to drill and training ware wldom challenged in his own regi ment and even among the divisional staff officers with whom ha was noth ing loath to break a lance at any time and place of their own choosing ha was scotch no doubt about that his nndeoessors in the commanding officers saddle had scotch numw ctilaholm and murray but colonel chlaholro was bom in canada and his ucoeesor colonel murray in ireland colonel allan however came direct from the land of brown heath and shaggy wood and settled in acton whence his cnnnactlon with the newly formed regiment waa as inevitable and as natural aa the flow of water down tha sides of tha mountain to the valley of the credit every man who amounts to any thing has an ideal to work to some one whow life tires tha imagination and whow character stands out aa tha guiding star that directs and control his thoughts and actions through ufa raejling back through tha years i feel that the great influence in tha early ufa of colonel allan waa that lridomltabla old warrior sir colin qamphell whow brigade of h era had stood like a stone wall at bal aclava in line and had repulsed the russian cavalry establishing an ln- fantry precedent and immortalising their action under tha title the thin red line when colonel allan became the commanding ojfioer ha asked for an issue of tartan trews of tha campbell plaid and in that ha probably bad in mind the camerorilans or scottish rifles and during his ssdminlstratlon tha halton regiment must have borne a striking resemblance to that historic covenanter corps it la noteworthy that when tha first contingent from tha halton regiment went into tha trenches in france it waa under the instruction of the oameronlan regiment whow courtesy is one of the pleasant recollections of tha war i never met him for ha had retired afore i joined tha regiment but x had the honour of paying him what was probably tha last military compli ment ha received it was long after ha nad retired and whan ha waa a frau old soldier a land mark on the streets of acton to whom tha cltlwns of that town point ed with proprietary interest and pride on seturday tha tttb of septem ber 1001 a parade and ceremony waa held in acton in connection with the unveiling of tha memorial commem orating the life and sacrifice of our comrade gunner w j uoore who had given his life for tha empire in south africa x wu in command of tha south african veterans some forty in number who had assembled to honour one they all knew and loved as the pared marched along mill street in tha direction of falrvlew cemetery where the cenotaph was erected x reccnlsad in tha crowd that lined the streets a figure that everyone in tha county knew by daacription colonel allan the men looked weu in their khaki tinlforms and marched with the pre cision of regulars animated by that mysterious quality esprit da corps on the on hand and on the other by a detail- to glv their best in tha honour kid lo mi wlio a few months before d marrhed with thetn as w pass ed colonel allan x gave tha coramand royal cianadlans eyes right and the man turned their heads and searched the crowd for tha person to whom this compliment was given they did not have to search long for even if the salute had not been re turned they ttroutd have ricegnlaed the stalwart old soldier without diffi culty but the salute was of eourm returned the old colonel stiffened to attention and as he brought the right hand to his cap a smile of pleasure came over his face that any man in the halton regiment would have marched the length of tha county to receive x am told that colon allan never did anything reluctantly he always knew what ha wanted and knew the best way to get it x think the follow ing anecdote wiu throw some light on his robust personality and also indi cate a way of inforclng order and discipline wblch wul be new to marly jf the officers in the regiment today a private soldier had run amuck under the influence of he hot weather or something else and had driven his tent mates from the tent at tha point of the bayonet which he had fixed to his snider rifle one of thew fellows had been jabbed in the chin by the bayonet and it was evident the sold ier waa in a bad temper he stood in the tent with his body and rifle through the flap defying all and sun dry and addressing the assembling soldiers in the choice idiomatic lang uage peculiar to men of his type and condition and there didnt seem to be anyone who was particularly anxious to try conclusions with him at this juncture the colonel arrived an the scene took in the situation at a ilance as the crowd parted to let htm through olve me a belt roared the colonel and immediately a down were proffered by the men who were gal vanised into action by the voice of authority and the resolute stride and appearance or this soldier who did not have to refer to the kings regulations for the solution of such problems the old colonel wlected a supple mlt and immediately stepped towards the danger none with the belt in his eft hand he struck the prodding bayonet with the supple belt it colled around the steal blade like a serpent he jerked that weapon to the left and drove his right like a battering ram x the soldiers jaw and that soldier duappeared through that tent flap as it a trap door had opened under him the incident was closed x have said that the regiment dur- ng his time must have resembled tha oameronlans or scottish rifles it must have sounded like them too for oe introduced two bagpipers and it is tald that these pipers worked from reveille to tattoo in their endeavor to invest tha regiment in the musical atmosphere so dear to the heart of colonel it is a far cry of the days of colonel allan and colonel murray and ihe military service has made much progress along the road to efficiency men have learned that the eswnoe of jfficiency is not the capacity of its jolonel to manoeuvre the regiment through the intricacies of clow order drill and ceremonial but the criterion if efficiency is the capacity of au the officers and iioncotnmlsslcned officers to lead their respective commands in the absence of higher command as in the prewnoe one man battalions are as obsolete as the square formation used at wat erloo and quatre bras for authority must be delegated and initiative must iie encouraged and developed in order that a battalion may live through the stress of modem war for purposes of administration there is little difference between the early regiment under colonel allah and a regiment in th canadian expedition ary eporces in fact the cgnutation of a regiment is older than the mosaic law and was outlined by jethro the jbfldlanlte to moses before the people of israel had their first brush with the amalekltea in colonel allans time the tactical unit in the field waa the battalion and its every move was by order of tha of ficer commanding assisted by his adjutant black pwdw vwainous saltpeter aa tha poet called it was replaced by a smokeless cordite and the old single loading musket was replaced by a magatln rifle and clow order forma tions suddenly went out of fashion and extension and decentralised command superceded the old order of things this required of the youngest cor poral a tactical knowledge and capac ity for leadership unheard of in the old days and the undying story of the retreat from mens is the story of how the british regiments broken up into fragments and sections mutually sup porting carried on in tha absence of commanding officer and even platoon commanders this decentralized system was the weapon that contributed most to the dereat of prance in the war with prussia though it was not till the nineties that it was adopted in the british armies it made slow progress in the militia owing to the paucity of qualified iion commissioned officers in the expeditionary regiments it took a full year to develop them this new system introduced after colonel allans time of which the key note la cooperation and initiative la the greatest change in the service buf there are many others whohe nkauttr f nobody wonders what gom on behind the curtain our pride liau drawn to dim the sights that would sham conceit or quicken our hearts one kindly best i that screen twlxt us and the rrleml- less poor who wearily wait in vain at our door unloved unguarded groping blind tt a veil that nobody looks behind nobodys business if women toll in a deathtrap drenched with eetyr oil risking an uglier doom than the ltake in lofts that the very rats forsake i no ones affair if fortunes grow of peril and lifeblood pain and wot and childrens faces that used to shin nobodys business but yours and minel leonard if robblns balunafap a miscellaneous shower was given at the home of mr and mrs james klrkwood balllnafad on the even ing of december 37th in honor of mr and mrs oear sinclair who were mar ried last week when the young esqueslng mrs bert rogers spent a few days last week waiting on her sister mrs r english or toronto who is ul master albert kirk or toronto is spending the holidays with mr and mrs john mckechnle there was no service in the united church on sunday or at melvule church celadon on account of the rev mr n candler their pastor be ing ul advocate jan 3rd an irishman who was an eligible bachelor visited a widow in the dis trict every evening and had tea with her a friend suggested that he should marry her i have often thought about it he d but where should i spend the evenings thenf a farmer it ts a bad season my com is hardly an inch high colleague that is nothing the sparrows have to kneel to eat mine why is it that you have broken off your etiagament allcer oh my dear i he told me he waa connected with the movies and the very next day x saw him driving a furniture van notes and comments a doctor was severely crltlcued by a coroner and jury for not attending an injured child until three hours after the accident his explanation was in part that the parents had not paid his bllu for years the jury seemed to think that this was no ex planation at all but doctors have to live they begin to earn money from their profession later than al most any other men in any other walk or life and after an exceedingly expensive training they are splendid ly responsible to the humanitarian calls made upon him vet they may justly claim they should no more be expected to attend people for nothing than should a dairyman to give his muk or a cobbler to supply free shoes on demand the jury omitted to con sider one point they should have directed a rider against uie thouiandi upon thousands of people who habit ually leave their doctors and dentists bills to be settled last of all the long distance driver of next year is going to be th man to f ul the provincial coffers according to a re cent statement from tha provincial authorities to the effect that the year ims would see an appreciable ln- creaw in the gasoline tax the man who does but little driving will not feel this tax as there is to be a counurbalancing reduction in the lic ense fee premier ferguson stated that the aim in this new legislation was to provide an equal paying basis for the provincial highways during the past year the gasoline tax yielad m 033 mi over gsoooo being paid by tourists the license fees for the year exceeded gmoooo it is said premier ferguson expects a revenue of 1 0000060 from the gasoline tax at a special meeting or the ontario motor truck owners association held in toronto it was decided that a delegation be appointed to wait upon the minister or highways requesting a compulsory insurance upon all motor trucks and truck drivers be limited to a ten hour working day in many business institutions and stores this time of the year la stock taking time the holiday season is over the years business is over with and preparation is made to see what has been carried over into the next year and under what handicap or help the years business starts off with in a senw it is a bothersome job and in another sense it la a pleasure each stock taking wlu disclose many useful lines that have been stored away and perhaps temporarily forgotten line that mean real money on the tmisv sheet will be unearthed and put to uw this stocktalcing checks us up it wul show many lines that possibly should have been sold in mother season and can be readily duiosed of now that they have been unearthed tha stores seem to make it a time of clearance for the stock that has been accumu lated and left on hand by tha old year people have come to look forward to the january clearances and many profit by the purchase of inriaartu during this time it provide the merchant with a more or leas busy season if he decides to dlpsow of his surplus and provides funds to add fresh stock more and mora each year this time is looked forward to by the careful shopper and the merchant who falls to take advantage and clear out his surplus wares at this time is los ing a splendid opportunity of turning dull months into tune of real good business ovebestimattno oneself when paul told thow to whom he wrote that they were not to think of themselves more highly than they ought to think we usually regard the advice as for thou alone who were altogether too conceited and we for get that the apostle wrote to every man that is among you we wonder u he really meant itt we know some college professors who are conceited and some self- made business men and some young folk who wul listen to our good ad vice and some preachers who are too proud to do what we tell them and some editors who think that they know it all but that it applies to plain tom jones of mary johnson this seems absurd i vet there may be something in it we overestimate ourselves when we refuse to listen to the advice of our friends a friend may be mistaken but he is a friend and that means that he should be treated courteously we may not take his advice but at least we had better listen to what he has to say and we need even more to give at tention to what our enemies say about us they do not like us but that is all tha more reason why they will not be afraid to teu us the truth they may be wrong but probably they are part ly right and they wul let us see our selves as we ought to and we overestimate ourselves when we think that we are better than oth ers we may be but the probabulty is that they are just about as good aa we are they may have less education but they may know more they may have less refinement but they may have greater artistic skill and discern ment they may not be able to argue at all and yet they may have the rights of the caw and we may be ab solutely wrong better think soberly and allow to others the possibility of being occasionally a trifle wiser than we ore of courw it is humiliating but it may be very safe the new outlook the ontario government has appoin ted miss pear church daughter of o ft church editor of the streetsvlua review to be a junior farmers lec turer miss church will lecture in different parte or ontario last week she spoke at cobourg she
