summer on july 13 mrs bay- ley celebrated the looth anniversary of tier birth when her many friends and relatives gathered about her for the occasion at that time she had intend ed to revisit her old luune in stewart- town near georgetown but at the last minute she decided that h would be better to observe the event quietly at home mrs bayley was bom in the village of stewartiown on july 13 1838 she came to live in port dover about 30 years ago and has made her home there ever since her first husband was mr thomas smith after whose death she married thomas bayly captain of a great lakes steamer alter his death she made her home with her son t w smith port dover jeweler until very recently she remained in full possession of her mental faculties she had a wonderful memory many intensely interesting stories of the pioneer days in ontario came from her lips her maiden name waa mary thomp son she was one of a family of 10 children her father a scotsman came to upper canada when this part of the province waa nothing but a wilderness she could recall with un usual clarity the extreme privations which their family were forced to en dure there were no roads and no hor ses and the father used to walk many miles through the forest to take a bushel of grain for milling to the then town of york the exciting and adventurous times of the upper canada rebellion of 1837 were indelibly impressed upon her mind in stewarttown there was then an old blacksmith shop where the rebels congregated and where spikes and spears were secretly fashioned for the patriot forces mrs bayly waa fond of relating the occasion when the wife of the smithy visited her fathers home to warn the family of wliat was trans piring in their immediate neighbor hood lest they be unexpectedly at tacked by the rebels while the thom pson family was not touched during the outbreak the male members of the family were always prepared to resist an attack in those early days wolves and bears roamed the district and the inhabi tants wero constantly on guard no one ventured out after dark the old home or the thompson fam ily at stewarttown atlil stands and it was one of the sincere regrets of mrs baylys declining years that she had not been permitted to visit the build ing which holds such an historic in terest and about which centred her memories of fascinating clujdhood days the district
