that morning of august 20th 1914 when the first contingent overseas marched to the station in georgetown the first move of the journey to prance there is always water going through the mill and in the sixteen years to come there will be just as much though whether it will be as hot as that of tne p sixteen is a prediction beyond the scope of this re cord and the divlnatory powers of the writer much water went through the mill on that day too for it rained without ceasing as- the contingent folded its tents and departed for the qtr station and the people of georgetown raised their umbrellas squared then- shoulders and stiffened their upper lips as they inarched beside these men who carried tne honour of- the nation on their standards and the love of so many in their hearts no roman expedition would have started under suehrtondluons all the auspices weffiadr had we be lieved in signs and portents there would have been no postponement of tiny or then- agents if you pref were busy at ottawa and they had or dained that the assembly of the cana dian forces should begin on the 20th of august and there are seldom any conditions attached to a military or der it was as i remember the wettest summer on record it rained much of the time at valcartler and the plains of salisbury and the mud became a proverb in the first division that was the lirst of the long line of mis haps and troubles that was laid to the war and the wise ones explained the rain as the result of the detonations on the western front which were great indeed to cause disturbances in the atmosphere at a distance of three thousand miles the force had been in georgetown just three days and when the order came t moye to on a routs marc up over the white brlugr wei wsung along side or ute road in front of john melvins house when a messenger handed in the ex pected telegram the receipt of which was the signal far an outburst of cheering the substance of the mess age was an order to proceed to val cartler the following morning and included details as to transport and rations and our first reaction was to dispatch mr conover to the otjt station to complete transport arrange ments and the second to get back to the drill ball to pack up that was in the late afternoon and the people of georgetown had but few hours to prepare for the patriotic cele bration that was held in the park that evening d lf of tfro hk not ancpover uiatplcturesque stream his scepter had no authority there are many things in life that do not move to the word of command or halt and it is well that such is the case the trip to valcartler on the troop xfaln was uninteresting and the ar rival there and the long march in the rain to our place in the camp along the jacques cartier river not much more all troop trains are alike and the only thing that stands out on that trip la the lordly tninm of some city corps officers in our car though we were all to be brother of ficers in the same regiment within a few weeks it takes a great while to get acquainted with some people and sometimes it is worth the effort and as often not the lordly isolation was one of the outstanding elements of that hectic camp at valcartler and describes the attitude of the so called city corps to wards their comrades from the rural districts this was engendered by the desire on the part of these city corps to carry their regimental identity in the militia into france rather than to form part of composite corps of which they formed a part only while none of the city corps were large enough to form a whole regiment they were willing and selfish tingh to form the nucleus about which a dosen or more rural corps would be gathered with all the kudos andffeon- ours accruing to the cjpjours and per- sonel of the city corps the city corps had the pull and the rural corps were the footballs that were kicked about the commons jave cheerfully preferred death on the firing line tofhe soul oonsiuning misery and rtesblatipn of spirit that comes to mentsf btmt category there were thousands of such and at valcartler we were- forced to part with many of them and one i recall had marched with a british- regiment across south africa but that was fif teen years before and fifteen years makes a great difference to die life of any man there were less than twenty regi ments when the organization was com plete and there were at least four as pirants for the position of command ing officer for each of them and a hundred more ready to jump at the opening should one appear the most any rural officer could hope for was to get command of a company and even there most of them name very close to the age limit which defmately axes the age at which any officer may bold his appointment in that connection the age limit at which an officer in the british cana dian or american service can hold his commission is lower than in any of halton schools progress in music medical inspection and health supervision ratifying progress is being made in regard to music in haluin county schools li noted in the annual report of public school inspector j m denyes who points out that four of the five towns in the county and several of the rural districts now have vocal instruction in their schools a develop ment of this being an annual festival for the third time this year the inspector also calls special at- ntlpn to the sublectf shwi saxon nations it is extremely doubtful if waters of the jac cartier blvitr i fk vnn tin shall poche the two outstanding mili tary figures of the war could have held appointments in either the bri tish or american forces for both of them were about seventy and well over the retiring age for even senior officers in the armies above mentioned it is further interesting that the swiftest and most successful as well as the most brilliantly conceived campaign of modern times the prussian cam pugn against france in 1870 was the conception as well as the execution of von moltke a man then over seventy i mention these details for i wish to make it clear that a great number of excellent militia officers were wasted because of the low age limit in the british and canadian services captain cllne one of the hal ton officers transferred to the divisional signallers at this time a position he was well adapted for as he was a physicist on the faculty of toronto university when the war broke out re had filled the position of adjutant during the camp of 1914 and filled it well and efficiently as he also did his position on the division during the war some of our men transferred to other the feeling against the city corps abated nothing add the queens own t rifles of toronto was the particular object of our dislike and contempt and this was evidenced whenever the halton men and the the companies were built up to a strength of two hundred and twehty seven all ranks the v platoons of a company number three and four were from the york rangers a fine lot of fel lows who lived in perfect harmoiry with the men from halton 1 must note however that the thirty men from the norfolk militia battalion were also admitted to a company and their service was above suspicion and of high quality i emulation plays a tremendous part in military life as a civilian no bat talion is satisfied with being as good as the sister battalions it must be bet- iter and the construction placed on from a polioe viewpoint declared to the electric club at the king edward hotel yes terday that crime is not on the de crease in this country in spite of all the money being spent on public wel fare to a certain class of people who attempted last fall to tear down the british institu tions of this city they believed in neither qod nor morality he said and the action which we were forced to take tn spite of certain adverse criti cism is ample proof that when a man makes his home here he should be forced to live in accordance with the laws of the country objects to women senators from the bracenridge am sure i do not think a woman senator i am not sure that the advent of women into any such field has been or will be of benefit to the country this of course is old- fashioned let it go at that hon c drury started the same thing when he made a girlclerk a registrar women may make just as good offtclrls but they do not make better an odd breakfast is your most important meal at no time in the worlds history has the question of diet reached the importance it has at the present time physicians when prescribing for the ills of humanity lay great stress on what to eat and what not to eat and it is interesting to note that whole wheat plays a prominent part in the dietary as laid down by the medical profession the physician will gen erally explain that whole wheat con tains all the nourishing elements- proteln for body building carbohy drates for energy mineral salts for bone and tissue vitamins b and f for energy vitality and bran for safe regulation to meet the requirement of modern life it is universally agreed that the light breakfast is supreme ly important what the meal lacks in volume it must make up in nourish ment essential to the development of husky children vigorous men and healthy women of all the grains grown wheat is the richest hi food value with children the morning cereal for breakfast is the necessary element after the nights test thelr small stomachs are empty and it is imperative that good nourishing food be taken into the system the food children cat tn the morning- can do them the most good or the most harm it the flavor of the cereal is appealing when the vereal happens to be the eyer popular shredded wheat the his position and the surplus officers i winter meals crisp biscuit that requires no cooking and may be served with any of the fresh or hothouse fruits served at ie iauihy- on how to serve shredded wheat will appear in this paper from time to time in interesting shredded wheat advertisements describing the delici ous combinations that can be made with this cereal for hot weather and we publish the following article from the brampton conservator with georgetown substituted for the former town it is quite applicable to our own as well as other municipalities and should be read by every citizen georgetown wants more industries so does nearly every city and town and many villages throughout the pro vince georgetown needs more industries if it ls to ensure the upkeep and growth of the town and its public utilities and continue to provide an ample local market for those already established in business here but this condition is not peculiar to george town it ls the problem of most municipalities appreciating this fact then the mat ter of securing more industries for our town resolves itself down matter of keen competition with i other places in the province there is no u sitting down and wishing for lactorles to locate here neither is there anything much to be gained by announcing to each other every time the towns welfare ls discussed that we must have more industries true it is an evidence that we are indus trially conscious but so are most other progressive towns of equal slse wishing we had more factories and preaching to each other on the point is good as far as it goes but it doesnt go far enough our desires must take on more tangible form first we must sell georgetown to the industrial world there are many ways in which this can be done some directly and some indirectly indivi dual boosting to visitors and those we come in contact with is one good way publicity properly directed ls another good way radio newspapers and direct advertising judiciously applied ivlll all help qeorgetown s many ad vantages must be stressed and stressed hard because after all a town like most other commodities must be sold on its merits elected representatives ousiness men and taxpayers generally must be continually in search of pro spects and ever ready to advance rea sons why georgetown is the logical location but you say we have done all that and are doing it more now there is however one point which we feel should be emphasised at this time and that ls the reason for this article as stated previously our de sires and our boosting must in not iew cases be backed by something even more tangible there ls verylittle that the town as a municipality can do in assisting in- dusfiies belxed assessment ls as far ifreiliitf airy induce- ment for concerns to locate here but individuals can do much alike with many other sales trana- aotions involving- a large outlay and where competition is keen attractive terms or assistance in financing play big part in closing the deal not a few of the cdncerns seeking out locations require financial assist ance this ls not always an evidence at weakness in their proposition it may be a new company just getting organized with genuine sales possi bilities or may be anestablished com pany re organizing for expansion in each case the need for additional capi tal is not to be wondered at there are undoubtedly some real good con corns forced to look for finances tn this way the town in which they locate is the natural place to sell their stock while georgetown s experience has not been all that could be desired in this regard we must facd the facts squarely individuals in other towns are doing and prepared to do again the very thing our business men are asked to do if because we have been deceived a couple of times by appar ently good things which went bad we are going to turn a deaf ear or lose our eyes to every such proposal which comes to us rest assured we are naturally reducing our chances of se curing industries do not misconstrue this however to- mean that we favor supporting the sale of stock by every tom dick or harry that comes along that is farthest from our mind but let us banish pre judice and decldo each proposition or its merits they are npt all bad la fact some will undoubt prove real ly good and be not only an asset to the town in which they locate but a good investment for those who had faith and foresfgnl ouln5jiiquld inat study qf every indus trial proposition offered satisfy themselves of uo chances of success and the advantage to the town and it favorably impressed dont procrastin ate but turn in i and do our utmost to get such an industry established in town t 4 v
