on the plains and it was largely rapid fire with fifteen shots a minute all of which were aimed and the greater part in the target as a fair average there was no long range firing all at the decisive of salisbury it was organized in accordance with the mosaic system outllined above though the judicial authority of the rulers of fifties and the rulers of tens was somewhat restricted in theory if not in practice probably all the army formations in christendom had a similar organisation which above all delegated to the junior officers and noncommlssloned officers power and initiative and which recognized the impossibility in a modern war of any one man controlling or even trying to control a battalion scattered over i shell swept zone as large as a hun dred acre farm but the french had a different plan of organization and ignoring the deci mal system used by moses they broke the battalion into four parts each of approximately two hundred and twen tyfive all ranks and subdivided the compftnyjjita four smaller units which they called by the name of peleton and which the english have corrupted into platoon in that connection all the words and phrases in military terminology are from the french or norman french which is strongly in dicative that the hand that has car ried the sword down through the cen turies has been norman rather than saxon the fourth battalion was obliged to adopt this new formation and while the men were not seriously effected by the change it meant much to the of ficers who saw id the new system combinations that would sever them from their men and from heir bro ther officers in the old militia units in the halton detachment there was much alarm and we all waited the publication of the new order of or ganization in an atmosphere of anxiety and suspense then one night it came out the halton officers were distributed over the battalion as leaven to the lump and what we lost in a company where the men remained was gained in the companies to which the halton of ficers were alotted captain brown an excellent officer whom i tried to keep in a company went to 0 company captain dine to the divisional signallers by his own request as he was a physicist by pro fession and well adapted for the signalling work captain cooper to court marhall work within the dw1- flrbt battalion to which he was an i absolute stranger while lieutenants i murray mcklnley and reginald con- over remained in a company under my command no group of officers in the fourth battalion had a better record and no group held the respect of their men to a greater extent than those leaders who received their schooling within the ranks of the ojd militia regiment the halton rifles behind these officers from tae hal ton rifles there stretched a long iine of other halton officers allan kerns ooodwlule moore schultx panton and jnaoy- others who carried the torch of duty in the relay race of life and with such a background it was inevitable that the representatives of the regiment should make good records and liv up to the traditions so carefully guarded by their pre decessors f in the biblical extract given above it is sato that the hard cases they brought before moses before the commanding officer who at the time was ll col bert labatt there were not many hard case in the fourth but there was an epidemic of over staying passes that presented a con siderable was little known at that time but took its place in later mnwiiw and without doubt accounted for more casualties than any other form of weapon used in the war the division assembled for a tacti cal exercise on one v those early days under the direction of the gen eral in command it took place over beyond wlnterboume stoke and was a revelation of the lack of rpartnr of some of the senior officers in the matter of selecting defensive positions general aldersons criticism at the close of the day was acrimonious and deservedly so and one point he em phasized was that in holding a river line it was wise to keep the river in front of you and not behind general alderson was a man of much service and experience much of which was gained in south africa and his knowledge of open warfare such as war normally is was consider able but in the war of fixed positions with little opportunity for strategy or generalship where generals were little more than master mechanics he was perhaps too old to adapt himif to conditions so utterly dlffereritrto those to which he had been trained the men liked him and cheered him as he galloped along the column of any of the battalions his rtlrlt at the second battle of ypres were superb and his name and memory nil a large part in the lives of his men who are still able to remember he gave the divisional officers lecture one day on leadership and the importance of clear and emphatic commands he used as a sort of text the verse if the trumpet gives forth an uncertain sound who shall prepare himself for battle he was a fussy little man at times and we gave him much to fuss him but we respected his judgments and had no illusions as to his quality as a defensive general one story of him i heard after the stand of his division at the second battle of ypres his headquarters were at a srnall chateau called brtelen back of the yser canal and when the report came that the line had broken and the division was strugg ling to repair the gap he sald to his staff well gentlemen we move at once back to poperingue sir en quired one of the officers poperingue being seven miles to the rear no sir dp into the salient if the cana dian division dies we die with it if that story is true and i am in clined to believe it in substance there must have been great consternation among the red tabs of the staff of the first canadian division but the first division did not die nor did it surrender and the sacrifice of its general was not required somehow even afwthat early date we were very callous and indifferent to the greatness of generals for we all realised that the regimental of ficers and the men were the bulwark of the nation and moreover up to the present generalship had not been any too conspicuous our feelings in this matter were coloured by the visits and lectures of general officers who usually lectured us on the vital im portance of seeing that the brass and buttons of the men was scrupulously clean and that the salute was render ed with the proper degree of smart ness tout general alderson was a man of common sense and continually ad monished the division that the great factor in efficiency was to know how- to exploit the advantages of ground and so minimise the effect of enemy shells and machine gun fire but hero wa laave him with th it is a good thing the revival of mothers sunday even if it has no other results than that little atten tions rather often neglected by the young people are paid to the mothers mothers are such patient people and oh such appreciative people i suppose a lad brought hair a dozen carnations to the girl he vdored she would quite probably inwardly scoff at the meagre offering but let any boy or girl man or woman go to bis mother on sunday with half a dozen white carnations for her and it will brjng untold happiness to that mother try it it is worth it and wul everyone remember on bun- day next to wear the white f mm- which says to all who may wish to read lb meaning that or force as the personality of christ must have dominated the wrangling multitude that thronged the streets and clamour ed for his destruction one feels very small beside the oteat cathedral and loses much of his twentieth century arrogance when he learns that it was built in the thirteenth century by an architect who built to the glory of god and not to the fame of himself after the man ner of many at the present time there was no record of the chief builder though no doubt the individual stones would show the peculiar marks of the mason should the building be taken down which we trust it
