battered old train of cars the bolt of paints and the books leff out and the shfp with her broken spars let me step in a house at the close of day that is uttered witk childrens toys and dwell once more jn the haunts of play with the echoes of bygone noise in spring you may catch one of them in the act of crowing the noise a comical one like that of a young rooster cut short in his first attempt to crow each locality has its local birds try the experiment of placing food for them and rest assured that you will have interesting bird visitors some perhaps that you did not know were residents there are economic phases well worth considering while bleeding the birds may be made quite as enter taining to the grownups as to child ren give me the house where the toys are seen tv- a house where is ample for some cf our winter birds and bread crumbs or waste grain will supply the many which do not care for the suet com mence as early as thanksgiving if you wish or any time later that you are ready have your feeding station where it can be conveniently seem from the livtn room in this way you can get a lot of fun out of the small service given an enjoyable method is to make a perch across the window and placed a few inches below the top of it lower the window from the top and fasten three or tour small tacks or hooks in the top of the sash from each of these suspend a piece of suet tied around with a cord the suet can be renewed as necessary without go ing out in the cold simply by lowering the window and fastening it from the inside the birds are safe from cats and all of their movements can be easily watched dont worry about how you are go ing to get the birds to come to your feast theyll look after that and you will besurprised at how soon the first one will find it you will be surprised again at how soon the word seems to be passed from one to another with us the chickedee is usually the first to find the suet it is the most friend ly of all our winter birds and very graceful in all of its movements it is easily recognised by its small size i black cap and its little decdeedee the whitebreasted nuthatch is an other regular visitor it is a little larger than the chickadee and not quite so chubby it has the same black white and gray coloring which lielp to conceal it in the snowy j branches but it has a slimmer head and a longer bill it makes a sort of nasal drrr noise as it hunts over a neighboring tree trunk for grubs in this it does what you will not find any other bird doing it goes head downward quite as often as right side up in this way 1 has two view points of the same spot and lucky is the grub which escapes its sharp eyes both chickadee and nuthatch take a back seat when a woodpecker comes they just fly to a near tree and wait until the perch is vacant there are iwo woodpeckers common at he coun try feeding station the downy is the smaller and the more friendly it is black and white with barred wings and a bright red spot on tbe back of the neck if it is a male the female shows only black and white it is in teresting to watch how the downy uses its tail to brace itself while eating al ter the manner of all woodpeckers when the hairy woodpecker pomes even the downy slides away you can easily tell it qy its larger size and more vehement pecking like the downy oiily the male has the bright red on the nape of the neck the harsh calls of the blue jay are often heard especially when a storm is in the air there is a flash of color and all the other birds yield place to the jay which takes such big moutiifuls of suet that we wonder if there will be any left for the other birds but it likes peanuts and all the smaller grains quite as well the tufted titmouse a gray bird with a prominent crest may be a new one to you but there is almost al ways seme special feature which makes it easy to recognise the different birds the blue jay cardinal oedar bird and tufted titmouse all have oonspicuous crests but one would never mistake any one of them for any of the others the cardinal male is a flaming red its mate is olive green with a dash of red on the beak wings and feel it very rarely shows any interest in sue but will eat freely of cracked corn or other small grain if it is scattereo about the lawn bobwhites are attracted also by the email grains fortunate you may count yourself lf a covey of them hap pen to come to the yard they 1 eat their fill and then perhaps group themselves into a cluster and go to ateejrjrr as lii do in their native woods in this circle each individual always has its head pointing outward we have seen them take their places in it more than onoo and always in the same way as the circle nears completion lie last ones back into their places wtth tbe wise arrange ment of nature that the heads all point outward on the first disturbance the birds scatter- in night and are hi part saved from gunshot ringnecked pheasants will alaov par take ot the feast of grain the males are especially beautiful with their iridescent plumscs eoujabiterodusrs a prize composition below is s composition written by davld crichton or form ti of the georgetown high school it was ad- judged the best composition of hls class ror last month ed treep by a tiokr some time before this experience be fell me i became an enlisted member of the 45th overseas regiment this unit had never before in its short ex istence been sent to a foreign outpost of the empire qur barracks were situated on one of the main streets of southhampton the whole regiment was quartered there when our colonel read to us the orders directing that we be sent on the following saturday to india- to suppress some ohandi uprisings there- officers and men were ordered to col lect their belongings and be on hand the next saturday at the barracks when the appointed day came we marched to the dock amid the blare of our band and the rousing cheers of our friends there was the usual kiss ing handshaking and weeping at the troops departure but nobody seemed particularly sorry to see me leave dear old england after an uneventful trip we arrived at our calcutta quarters where amused ourselves by lounging around che city and watching the bazaars of the hindus open rebellion had broken out in one of the villages situated on the out skirts of the large jungle ment was directed to cfush this re volt and to reach the place it was necessary to march through the jun gle to make travelling easier we were broken up into platoons it hap pened that i was put in charge of a rascally crowd of sepoys my platoon made rapid progress through the dense vegetation and soon but a journey of three days separated us from our des tination one dark anight however a herd of elephants charged at our camp up setting our tents and throwing us in to general disorder the cowardly blacks fled leaving me alone after awaiting the return of my hindus for half a day i became impatient and decided to find the rest or my regi ment walking for many days equip ped only with a service revolver and a haversack i roamed through the tangled foliage seeming to get no where the day was bright and sunny too hot m fact for me being tired i de cided to fave a rest under a nearby cypress tree many minutes must have elapsed before i was awakened by a low growling amid a clump of thick foliage soon the growling grew into a low bass roar and out stepped a large tiger with eyes kl like red coals suddenly it came to my mind that i was in tor some trouble about twenty yards distant was a friendly tree with low branches to this i ran with all the speed i could command the tiger seeing my flight started af ter me the brute seemed very hun gry and i did not fancy having tte seat of my trousers chewed away would i be able to reach the tree be fore the infuriated beast would be upon me the limb of the tree was about five feet ahead although it seem- d miles away i could hear the fierce animal breathing behind me and just as i was about to make a leap my foot caught in a root sending me into a handspring instantly the merciless creature be gan to acratch my back with his sharp claws ripping away pieces or my tun ic and strips of my flesh drawing my revolver i fired at the brutes head striking him between the eves what a roar dune from his great throat when the bullet struck him he delivering a crushing blow with one of his huge forepaws on the side of my head it was no love tap either for t sent me reeling into unconsciousness when i regained my senses i saw a movement in some bushes to my right it was the mate of the tiger x had just killed seeing a large sapling near me i hastily scaled its trunk and climbed out onto a branch the mate began to sniff about the trunk ot the tree but when she caught sight of me she began to roar and bellow but this did not effect me in the slightest i simply opened my haversack and pro ceeded to empty it of its contents while i was thus engaged a small party came along consisting of one white man and several sepoys you can imagine my gladness when they despatched the great canine below wtth their highpowered rifles they help ed me down from the tree and gave me some braiidy which brightened my spirits then we oontlnued our march and i tried to look as if nothing had happened d crichton form ii o hs oeorgetown dec 12th 1930 dear editor and friends i am not going to leave the house in a until i tell the farmer thai i seen the first machine made in canada for cutting grain working in that field they said was toe first one made in canada sad it was made by lexler- to streetsvflle j do not remember what it was called i am almost sure it was not a reaper it took three hones to draw it the grain fell on a table as now and a man stood on the rear of that plat form and with a wooden fork pushed it off and it took four men to bind up the sheaves it was not put off very square and li was boundby bin der twine the men had to carry the twine with them now i always- rook ed back with a great deal of pleasun that i saw such an important mac hine make its start in this world and done so much good work and still on the job all the river credit done in this case was to furnish power to help make it i feel i am rather fortun ate in being in a measure connected with first machines etc i will tell you about them as v come up ttw credit the first velocipede bicycle made in canada was made in oeorge town the first power sent back up stream by the water that had run by was installed at the paper null in oeorgetown i will tell you later about that and atw- very important manufactory the first in nna mu started in aienwuuams now i must get back to streetevule in 1857 my father and two or- three of the mill hands took the toronto globe it came twice or three times a week so you see i have been at least looking over it for a long time and have not given up tbe job yet but more of this later about 1857 there was an election on alkens on the liberal or rebel- side r i think ourreglfool c o norvalon the other mow in those days at all public meettnga both sides were expected to appear on tne same platform at this meeting my father with a number of the mill bands was present mr alkens was the first to speak and when tte had finished they said well if ever krman gave a good honest statement that is the man on the other side sneaking for col clay was tbe great john hluard cameron of toronto lawyer and they said when he got through with alkens you would be sorry for 4tae man to think that be was wyii frhgh to believe what he was saying to the people however the people elected alkens it is said be changed his mind and died a senator you know that was not so many years after the mrkenirte rebellion andfarmgs to my mind an incident that happened at the four u this is on the road between the scotch block and toron to my friend stick leg hunter kept store there and be told me he be hoved he saved toronto from the rebels about midnight be heard the rebels coming from the scotch block direction and he slipped out the back door saddled the horse and made for toronto as fast as he could and he saved the cuty i was telling another friend who lived near there mr john ballantlne and he said the joke was on hunter it was a ahtvaree another man who hved on that not ed line was big john miller they were called tbe town line masers a lot of very husky wild fellows and john was tbe champion he attend methodist revival meeting and got religion i was at one of the meet ings when he was giving bis experi ences and he admitted so did every one who knew him that his past was not a good one and to be avoided he laid down safe and sane advice and asked as many as would to adopt it those who had been drinking not to take any more and ttie young not to take the first glass and then they would never be sorry as he had often been a number showed up and 1 know one who kept the promise and was not sorry tor doing so a vote was taken la 185 or 9 as to whether mai ton brampton or streets- vllle was to be the county town as rearranged brampton won and we were very much disappointed especial ly us boys who were attending the grammar school i expect you will be saying that i am coming up the river credit by gas but i can assure you the water is still on the job same as it was in tne days ot the barbers baufis and beat- ties i can assure you that when you live to a good old age and going back in memory and living amongst such people as john and robert oraydon john soruton will and john bmble- ton john and tun street john cong-
