public meeting on tuesday evening called by mayor mackenzie for the purpose of discussing the lav ing of pavement on church and charles streets the maypr introduced the subject and also spoke regarding the unem ployed who were now registering t he then called on warden mason of acton who explained the conditions under which the county council who evidently control the building of these connecting links in towns if the re bate of 50 is to be secured would construct th pavemen these con ditions were the same as accorded other towns in the county engineer smith also spoke at some correspondence more about sewkraoe the editor georgetown herald georgetown ontario dear sir judging by sentiments expressed- by a not inconsiderable number of resi dents following my letter of a week ago there is some encouragement fat us to continue efforts to obtain a sewerage system for georgetown those who oppose the scheme do so chiefly on account of the high cost to a town of 3000 inhabitants and covering an area of 1000 acres tsie following municipalities in ontario of similar population have installed mod era sewerage systems in the last 2 years alllston with a population of 133s palmerston wish a population of 1800 grimsby with a population of 2o00 orangeville with a population of 2t03 swansea with a population of 3540 as will be seen later the acreage is not of great importance as far as initial expenditure and cost of main tenance is concerned a rough general survey of the town has been made and it is stated thtst from an engineering point of view tile town is well suited for a sewerage system the town slopes toward tax low ground between queen and joku streets there would not therefore be any need of pumping except for one small district this would greatly re duce the cost of installation and usp- keep it is suggested that it would be suf ficient for the present to mstau a system of two trunk sewers one on queen street and the other on main street each emptying into a disposal plant situated somewhere below the factory of messrs harleykay ltd from year to year laterals from side and back streets would be connected ret h s bellisik 18 basilian material has passed through this plant there is left 1 fluid as pure as drinking water which is re turned to the river 2 solid material which is always m demand for ferti lizing purposes as tar as upkeep is concerned the plant is practically selfsustaining and requires only sui occasional visit by the sanitary in spector the sysem would be financed in the case of the disposal plant by the issuing of 20 year debentures and 30 year debentures for the sewers tthe money required to carry on the work is borrowed from the bank the in terest being added to the debentures the initial cost of the work is not great the system would be financed over a period of 20 to 30 years m the meantime residents and factories would have the use of the system whlcr will cost them less than they are now
