scott at the close of nominations clerk i m bennett was elected to the chair and called upon the following nomi nees who addressed the meeting reeve george currle was the first speaker and dwelt at considerable length on county analrs he sala that the exepnditure on roads could not be lessened much so long as the rate payers demanded it the expenditure on high schools had been heavy and eveiy pupil that attended high school was a direct charge on the county and hundreds attending never intend- ed to go through if the first two years high school work was given in public schools thousands of dollars would be saved the county if not taught in the present school buildings he could not see where there would be any saving the old peoples home had cose the county 11060 this year owing chiefly to the low prices received from the products of the farm he explained quite fuuy the financial standing of the township and stated that it had been necessary to raise the taxes to meet an over draft of 6200 from the previous year there had not been sufficient money collected for the past four or five years to meet the expenditure whoever compose future councils from now on should not spend more than they collected as the township was not breaking even when all was totalled up this year he expected there would be a deficit of moo or 500 some had doubted his statement regarding a deficit last year but the auditors had verified his statements he would be a candidate for the reoveship and his record of sevearl years was before he ratepayers if they saw fit to elect him he would be thankful and if not he thanked them just the same reeve currle answered several questions ask ed by ratepayers deputyreeve o w appelbe was pleased to meet the ratepayers again and said that jc had done his best for all concerned the road account had been lowered and while the council had spent a lot of money it had gone to meet uncontrolable ex penditure the money the council actually had spent amounted to a uttle over 16000 they bad cut the road account in two took the penalty off the taxes and no interest to pay until the first of the year unless the taxes were paid before the end of the month the county would have to bor row 40000 to pay the county rate he asked all who could to pay their taxes the unemployment was a big question and while there was lots in the country to eat there were people who hadnt the money to buy there was sufficient revenue from dog tax to pay sheep claims and charity ac count and a balance ot16950 re mained the council were not caus ing tax sales and any that had taken place were forced by the mortgagee he had done his best to economise in every way in the township and had fought against unnecessary oounty expenditures he thanked all and stated he would again be a candidate for jleputyreeve councillor lome l mullln thanked his movers and seconders for the hon or they had conferred upon him by nominating him for two positions deputyreeve and councillor he could not run for both and while it was a precedent that the term in the reeve and deputyreeve chairs was two years he was as yet undecided which office he would be a candidate for the previous speakers had cov ered the groupd pretty thoroughly eg pendltures had been cut where pos sible and hey had endeavored to keep up the standard of the roads re garding the relief question he thought a system should be worked out whereby a man 11 able could earn money by cutting wood and the wood distributed among the needy he was the oldest councillor at the present tune and if be decdled to make a change he would appreciate the rate payers consideration and left tha mat ter in their hands councillor wesley murray thanked the ratepayers for electing him a member of council last year he had endeavored to work for the best in terests of all and expressed thanks to those ratepayers who bad given work gartls to the township during the year he was opposed to going in debt and said whoever composed next years council should live with in their means they had endeavor ed to in the pats year and to the best of his knowledge no money had been misspent he was a candidate for 1933 council and solicited the sup port of the ratepayers councillor n ftoblnson owing to illness i sat unable to be present oeorge cleave who was nominated for reeve said the matter regarding overdraft had been misquoted to the people be was a member of 1s308i councils and enough money had not been railed by taxation owing to s surplus previously accumulated which it was desirous to user up the town ship had no right to carry surplus he said the council were r for the expenditure of the road super intendent he believed the past years council like most oouncuabad tried to- do their bast if elected to next years oouncilhe would dispense with the roads superintendent at the first meeting nothing against the superintendent as he had done his duty it is owing to the present de pression he would not spend money on roads but let each ratepayer look after the road in front of his property other things could be cut out such as the grant to fairs which are not justified under prese con dition we must do our part before criticising governments etc referr ing to the third highway be said the government and minister of highways was not forcing the matter merton be a candidate for reeve and if the ratepayers thought his ideas were right ne would- endeavor to carry them out if elected w a wilson numlnaled for de putyreeve stated that if there was an election he would be a candidate for the onlce he thanked all who had supported him last election and would appreciate their support agaon if there was a run for the council for 1933 r n brown nominated for coun cillor said tne statement this year looked worse than last there was about 40000 of taxes yet unpaid he thought the township financial year should end dec 1st and an audited statement presented tat nomination then the ratepayers would know the position they were in a man should not accept a seat on the council un less in a position to give his time to the serious consideration of the af fairs of the township if a candi date his name would appear on the ballot wm oowdy nominted for coun cillor said he was proud of last years council in one way we want a road superintendent and should not revert back to the old statute jabor system there was road work done that should not have been wlienno money to pay for it council must stop unnecessary spending and govern themselves ac cording to the times he would be a candidate if there was an election thos l leslie said he would not be a candidate if it would save an elec tion the council was not that bad that we could not do with them an other year he had spent no money when road superintendent that was not ordered by council he agreed with mr oowdy that we must stop spending township work should be given to men who need it in the township weeds should be cut by property owners and save that ex pense it would be a mistake to sell out farmers to pay taxes and that law should be changed if there was an election he would be a candidate mr archie mcolbbon and mr wm schenk
