acixfe imagine a whole section of this country crushed and twisted and distorted in the mighty hands of na ture 1 imagine earthquakes so terrible that they made the land break up into huge mountains under the stress of forces too great to calculate that is what actually happened in eastern pennsylvania millions of years ago when nature form ed the finest fuel that man has ever discovered read ing superclean anthracite through the long apes nature had been setting the stage for this dramatic climax great forests had grown and been leveled marshes filled with decay- ing vegetation to depths from 100 to 8000 feet had covered the eastern part of what is now pennsylvania the warm lifegiving sunshine had been stored in these swamps in the form of carbon a layer cake as the centuries rolled around the ocean had flowed over the swamps covering them with layers of sediemnt that later hardened into rock time after time this took place until a huge layer cake of rock and hardening vegetation had been built up with the rock corresponding to the layers of cake and the coal to the filling between the layers fourteen layers were thus made in eastern america the coal filling between the layers of rock at this time was soft and crumbly the kind of soft coal that is found in many sections of the country to day but luckily nature was not content to leave the coal that way the giants waken one day titantic forces were loosed and eas tern pennsylvania was put to torture slowly terribly it was crushed and broken folded and squeezed there was no escape from the tremendous forces pressing on the coal so it was compressed and hardened because of the nature of the vegetation in the pennsylvania marshes and because it was subject ed to greater pressure over a longer time than was coal in other fields this anthracite became the most refind of fuels the ages went by and as the warm sunshine and rain mellowed the ground so that foliage could grow again strange beasts roamed above the coal beds riche1 hani coal now supercleaned today themountains are being turned inside out the seams vjf anthracite that were left flat tilted or on end are being followed into their depths the sunshine of millions of bygone years stored in ancient vegetation ndw hardened into reading coal comes to warm you without fail to heat your home without dirtying it to serve you silently safely faithfully and
