cleared away the yellow glazed tea things that sundayafternoon harry arrived he was tall well built and certainly well dressed mary felt for a mo ment that it would not have been difficult at all to engage herself to hurt everything was different now however she reminded herself pressing the little note in her sleeve harry noticed the sigh and looked annoyed he felt her preoccupa turn she invited him to take one of the jtiqst comfortable chairs and then poured tea for him and passed cakes but there was little joy in the ceremony he asked her whether she would go out to supper with him and take a walk how about it mary he asked uary sighed a little wanly i am sorry harry she said with her becoming shrug if there s someone else he said sullenly you might introduce hirn to me i can put up a pretty good fight 1 you have no right to talk that way said mary you know you haven t you but she did not finish for it was then that a rather fateful knock came at the door that gave mary an opportunity to rush into the little hall she opened the door and a tall rather plain young woman of thirty stepped m she held out a large well groomed hand i m so glad to meet you little neighbor she said so so yeu re dear neighbor said mary valiantly i m not quite what you expected to see she asked just exactly said mary with a little trilly laugh after much discussing of plans it was agreed that mary and harry should take tbeir walk gfledear neighbor went back to her little apartment to make a salad and a batch of muffins and then they shduld all have supper together in her wee apartment if there s someone else harry said when they had reached the se clusion of the park i want to meet him why harry said mary why harry there isn t anyone if there was would you care don t ask me said harry don t you see bow i feel if you mean that you want to be engaged to me i don t think you are saying it very nicely do i haye to say it mary he asked putting his arms around her in the darkness no she whispered when winter comes to afflict those who are not in good health whose circulation s poor and iwhose clothing is possibly tnsufflclentv by far the most common location for chilblains is the leet but neither the hands nor the ears escape at the point where the chilblains develop there is first of allt a ting ling sensation then itching a blis ter which hats a purplish tinge forms over the area this blister is painful and when it breaks an open sore la left which is slow to heal to avoid chilblains the feet must be protected and kept warm by shoes and stockings which are neither so tight as to interfere with circulation nor so thin as to allow for chilling of the feet tightlyfitting shoes with thin soles over thin stockings invite trouble as do stockings which are so heavy as to cause the feet to perspire when the hands and feet are chill ed they should be kept away from open fire place stove or radiator a sudden change from cold to excessive warmth causes a rush of blood to the parts which have been chilled and this leads to irritation followed by chilblains under such circumstances suppos ing it is the feet which are cold the proper procedure is to remove shoes and stockings first of all the feet should be placed in cold water and then given a brisk rub with a rough towel this treat rest cir culation gradually and averts trouble a poor state of health may be the underlying cause of c a so it follows that as a practical meas ure of prevention the general health should receive attention through pro per diet and suolr hygienic essentials as fresh air rest exercise cleanli ness and elimination in many homes the floors are cold and in such homes the mother who stands for so many hours doing her housework develops chilblains on her heels and the sides of her feet to some extent this may be overcome by wearing heavier shoes and warmer stockings but more attention should be given to warming the floors painting the parts with tincture of iodine will stop the itching at the onset if an open sore develops it is well to remember the danger of in fectlon that attends all open sores and secure skilled treatment chilblains are not dangerous to life but they may take a great deal of the joy out of lire questions concerning health ad dressed to the canadian medical association 184 college street toron will be answered personally by letter gambling devices condemning punch boards as con trary to two sections of the criminal code of canada- and issuing a warn ing to the people of victoria couaty in this regaffdcrown attorney j e anderson kc asked the press to convey his warning to the people of the county my information is crown attor ney anderson asid that punch boards are imported from the united states and are distributed here for cents apiece to local dealers by local i mean county storekeepers etc there are 300 unches on each board and they sell for five cents each the prizes are three cheap pound boxes of candy at 25 cents each and one three pound box at 75 cents the dealers outlay is 2 jo and he gets 15 therefore a profit of 12 70 this is one side of the question the store owner and small merchant who has these punch boards is the one who will get hurt if there is court action the distributor wont be hurt he gets his bo cents and the store keeper owns the boad m this way the seizure ofslot machines is differ ent from punch boards because the seizure of slot machines hurts the distributor the operation of punch boards is double infraction of the criminal code under section 236 the opera tor is liable to a sentence of twi years imprisonment and a fine not exceeding 2 000 in addition the fellows who operate these boards bring themselves within the category of running a common gambling house and the penalty for this la one year prison or a heavy fine there ore a few exceptions in the case ot fair fairs with regard to games of chance but the exemptions do lot include punch boarot i undestand there has been large consignment of these punch boards come through on their way to a county distributor and it is only fair i think that the tsress should let the public and dealers know- where they stand we have made some sei zures and we arent going to allow these things to dllct right back where they were before if so a jiarier crack will have to be administered the fate of the twenty slot ma chines pin games
