the georgetown herald wednesday evening february 16th 1938 soi ttcnauy treasurer of the sla lom jclub entertained the members at his home last friday night theje was a large tornout attd those pies- entettt afterwards declared that it was one of the best social evenings yet held by 30 all had arrived and the evening got under way the first part was spent playing bridge alter which it was announced that there would be a scavenger hunt the members drew for partners and each couple given a slip oi paper with in struction as to what was required of them some were asked to get such things as a 1936 calender a black cat stag 10 shoe a birds nest etc etc v7e might mention at his time that one of the highlights of the evening was the president and vicepresident trying to catch a black cat and not meeting with very much success another interesting feature of the hunt was when the two mem bets assigned to bring back some red hah- tried to persuade an auburn- haired young lady to part witfl one if her locks by 1030 the last strag glers and how some of them did straggle in had arrived and after the various objects of the hunt had been shown to the judges of the contest the first prize was awarded alter the party had recovered their breath and were sufficiently rested lunch was served at this point we would like to thank those who have had the responsibility of preparing the eats each week it is ratlur a difficult job to know how many to prepare lor each meeting night and our social convenor mary paul de serves a greatwdeal of credit for the way she handled 11 after lunch was over the pianist of the evening paul barber gave us some music and the party bad a paul jones various games were played and the party lat er danced to the radio and it was several hours before the party finally broke up the next meeting will be held at the home of leslie clark on friday night feb 18th all members are urged ute present at s oclock an interesting feature of the evening will be a source ol fuel supplying about 15 to 20 per cent of the domes tic requirements of the country dur ing the ave year period 1931 35 the average annual cut of- fuel wood in canada was approximately 8000 000 cords valued at about 33 000000 wood as a fuel has a very definite field it lb the mainstay of our iiral regions and is mucn used for heating purposes in villages and towns in those parts of canada where lack of coal deposits- prevents the popiuitlon from securing cheap coal for domes tic use if methods of selling meas uring and burning firewood were jm proved the value of this fuel un doubtedly would be more appreciated to this end the forest products lap- oratories and the testing and re search laboratories or the depart ment of mines and resources in co operation with other organizations are investigating ways and means of extending the use of wood for fuel it has been found that as a rule thc fuel of seasoned wood depends generally on the weight per cubic foot the heaviest woods naturally giving the most heat a standard cord of well seasoned sugar maple lieech or yellow birch split firewood weighs upwards of 4 000 pounds whereas a similar cord of softwood may weigh less than two thirds as much the relative alue of the different wood fuels may therelin be approximately compared on rtt basis of their weights at the some moisture contents two pounds q
