the georgetown herald wednesday evening march 2nd 1938 page 3 tilting the camera up or down gives unusual angle pictures i17hen too walk down the street of your home town looking tor pictures what are some of the things yon see do yon notice a new building go ing np and tilt back your head to get a good tlew of the work is there someone digging a pit or ex cavation so that you hare to lean over and look down to see whats going on in such cases the angle makes the view interesting doesnt it then why not try the same thing with your camera i know of course theres a rule which says dont tilt the camera its a good rule too for many pic tures for instance if you take a picture of your bouse and get so close that you have to tilt the cam era upward your picture will show the house as if it were tilted back on its foundations which isnt the ef fect you want at all brit in a great many pictures an unusual viewpoint gives added in terest and for many subjects the birds eye or worms eye angle is a natural point of view for example suppose you see a painter on a tail ladder doing repair work on a store- sign if- you snap him from some distance down the street the picture wont be espe- c tally interesting but what if yon are almost under tbe ladder with the camera pointed straight up at him yoa will get an angle pic- tare that catches the eye instantly and it yon try snaps from two or three angles turning the camera so that the lines of the ladder and store sign lead into the picture in dif ferent wayb you may get several striking arrangements whether it is a natural view of an unusual subject or an on usual view or an ordinary subject the angle shot nearly always has in terest value a small boy curled up in a big armchair with a book is a good picture subject from a normal viewport but why not try a snap of him from a high viewpoint auch as from a box or table or even from the household stepladder it might give an even better picture i saw an interesting straight- down snap recently made from a window right over the snapshooters front door two visiting friends were looking straight up at the cam era one could see but little more than their faces and the walk on which they were standing unusual camera angles made the picture un usual but there really should have been one more plcturere snap of the snapshooter as be leaned ont of tbe window to snap his friends taken with the camera pointed straight np that would have given both viewpoints try some angle shots they are a fruitful source of camera fun u7 john van guilder i wish for you a little laughter when tbe canadian women use lipsticks to wbxt extent the facts have not been made clear by the dominion statisti cian but it is safe to assert they are not so lavishly decorated by this means as their sisters in the united states a recent report issued by the department of commerce at wash- mgton gave to the world the rather m startling news that last year the mon- ey spent on lipsticks would have patat- edo000 bams nearly every one will agree that the money would have feaab better arrestment if spent on che tafktmgs there are occasional ivwences that even georgetown ladlea seek to imp then appearance meal times and in the quiet of their homes m the evening he went about touching the lives of folk without any apparent schedule we do not study tbe journeys of jes us in the same detail as we study the missionary travels of paul because geography was secondary in the min istry of christ today spiritual leaders are forced to carry heavy loads of responsibility in conducting the ac tivities of organizations the faces of some of our most prominent lead ers bear signs of strain as though they never had an opportunity to re lax or reflect leisurely christ stress ed fellowship far more than organiz ation he had fellowship with his disciples and with all others who car ed to have fellowship with him spent no time in church courts business meetings his full time was given to human contacts interrupt ions did not disturb him because his method wasto deal at first hand with people laactra teaching 2 3 nazareth where jesus was brought up may have been a town of nearly ten thousand people one s dtfy jesus taught in the synagogue a ad hnmediately interest was arous ed he explained the scriptures bet ter than the trained rabbis he was able to see meanings more beautiful than the poets and he told a story with inftnite charm the simplicity of the narrative carrying a profund ity of thought his attitude towards people presented a stiff moral chal lenge there was no doubt in the world tliat his teaching was novel helpful and powerful but he was a boy of their own home town a carp enter whose mother brothers and sisters they knew they knew him so well they could not appreciate him a good test of ourselves is qur ability to i appreciate christ so many or us are bunded by the commonplace and miss the sublime cangrcg tional atmoaphere 46 christ said take heed how you hear as much depends upon audience as the speaker ministers going from city to city find the con gregations vary greatly in responsive ness dullness in tbe pew is just as deadly as dullness in the pulpit t man who complained about the qual ity of the sermon of his minister talk ed throughout the sermon to members of his family in a dark comer at the back of the church a practice that prevented him from receiving any thing helpful that his minister did st y one enthusiastic unselfish young minister had his heart nearly broken by a couple of grammatical de- tectives in his official board there is a wise proverb like people like priest church members can make or mar their minister in the syna gogue at nazareth christ could lo no mighty work because of the atti tude of criticism jealousy and fixed points of view one of the best ways in which we can help our ministers sympathetically ttmmlng helaen 7- no one cari possibly know all that was in the mind of christ but we do know that he wished to perpetuate bis ministry having bis followers tell others about the reign of god on earth he spent much of his pubuo ministry in training the twelve dis ciples he allowed them to see him self in action and then he sent them out to try their hand they were to learn by the trial and error method it may be that we are trying to be too expert today trusting over much to academic degrees and official ordin ations christ believed that fisher men could help to spread the love of god in the lives of then they need ed training and he gave- them train- tag by word and example but he also believed in the leadership of the holy spirit which does not depend chiefly on academic degrees or educational preparation christ gave his disciples heart education spurring them on to suffer with their fellowmen and to be filled with a divine discontent as long as disease povetry injustice and marred the development of human personality a theological college today is expected to do far more for its pupils than christ did for bis dis ciples perhaps college training at tempts to do too much or falls to give sufficient stress to the most es sentia thing grace communicable 1t43 the disciples learned from jesus how to do his work this is an en couraging fact they went out to teach and preach and they won others christs way of life there is a great opportunity for lay preachers sunday school and bible class teach ers in the modem church there is abundant opportunity for personal evangelism in the life of every day apart from the organized church a young man who was in lour canadian provinces within four days was giv en an example of the living christ through a railroad man on the train through a lawyer who picked up a hitchhiker through a young man who has spent the last eight years in bed through a salesman making calls from town to town through a cloth ier in a store through a man who keeps his door unlocked for strangers meeting in four days a half a down men who are trying to express christ in their behaviour he discovered that there is a spiritual power by which to live the grace of jesus christ is not a luxury for the esoteric lew it is the goodness ol god to all mankind of achieving this very desirable result which would benefit everyone are suggested by those who raise their voices possibly one of the most practical steps to lower the burden would be to find ways- and means of decreasing the enormous expenditures for relief which although justified to a large measure are adding to our national difficulties to reach this point work must be found tor every worker unemploy ment however islargely governed by consumer demand as sales decline so does- employment conversely sales increase the services of more men and women must be utilised in the channels opened by the upward swing in buying that supports the point established by the produced in canada movement to wit that the more canadian mer chandise bought by our people whether it be from industry the farm or our own waters the more employ ment will be available and conjoint ly the less money will be required for unemployment relief that at least offers one way even though it be small of tackling uie problem of tax reduction it has a twofold advan tage in that it offers hope of some reduction in the enormous expendi tures for support of our unemployed of course the remedy in this par ticular direction lies in the hands or our own people if they lnsited on buying canadian where price and quality are at least equal on everj occasion we could soon hope for some increase in the number of can adians who would be gainfully em ployed fabmrrs creditors act to be cancelled the farmers creditors arrange ment act about which there hasbeen so much discussion since it became- law during the bennett government regime and which has been consider ed a curse hi many circles is to be- cancelled in the province of ontario the credit of farmers who endeav oured to pay their way was deterl- mentally affected by the act seem ingly unfair advantage has been given many farmers who were so far be hind financially that they could never extricate themselves and seemed to become unconcerned about their just debts not only that but due to the act farm mortgage and loans have become unfavourable investments and in many cases of no more value than the paper used in the financial trans actions frankly we feel that the rescinding of the act is a wise pro cedure and will do much to place farm financing tor a more favourable con dition and upon a firmer fou our idea of a perfect home
