georgetown ontario ladles and gentlemen in my last official report to you on the supervision of your school i de sire to express appreciation on my behalf and on that of the depart ment of education of the cooperation you hare given in the administration of the educational affairs of your municipality the past twenty five years have seen many changes in your educational set up the most lmpor- tant material change was in the erec tion of the two roomed addition posdmetketnvthonor an auditorium and stage which have ad ded very materially to the possibiltt ies in the school for mass training in more than one subject to say noth lug of the added value for school en tertainment and social events this is a very valuable asset and can be duplicated in a very tew schools of the sbse in the province you have been fortunate in main taining a permanency in the person- el of your staff much beyond the aver age in schools of the size in no small degree the successofthe school is attributable to this fact in the person of miss ryan you oae had for years the leadership of a princi pal who had added to her school room efficiency the judgment and sense of fair play which have served to make the organization run smooth ly and to perserve that confidence between staff and pupils which makes for sustained effort and final success it would be a personal pleasure to me to pay tribute individually to the other teachers on the staff the only addition to the staff this year miss june frank in charge of grade vh is proving to be very competent in both instruction and management and gives special assistance in the subject of music the other teachers have long service to their credit and are a group of whom any town might well be- proud their wholesome mor influence combined with that of the principal cannot but be reflected in the future history of the town it is in parting with such teachers with whom friendly association has meant so much that i find my chief regret in laying down the responsibilities of office i do not propose at this time to offer any remarks on the problems of education generally at some length in my last report i called your atten uon to some of these and if you are sufficiently interested i suggest that you refer again to that report i have repeatedly pointed out to you the lack in your school programme that you have allowed to continue in the absence from the curriculum of the two subjects household science and manual training i do not pro pose in this final report to traverse the arguments i have presented be fore the vrflue of these two subjects s amply shown in the fact that the minister of education has made them compulsory in the secondary schools surely if pupils there are to receive the fullest benefit from them the be ginning should be made in the ele mentary school i simply suggest again that you give serious consider ation to the introduction of these two practical subjects into your school programme the most profitable way in which this may be done as i have pointed out before is in cooperation with the acton and milton boards the enrollment of the school t present is 308 it may be interesting to point out that twentyfive years ago it was 306 with 6even rooms the new course of study for grades 1 vi has been received by the teachers with general favour this course shows wide divergence from the former prescription of work not so much in content but rather in organisation and method the new course is based more specifically on the immediate needs and capacities of the child at different stages and is intended to place chief emphasis upon the activities of the child rather than the instructional function or the teacher the flexibility of the cur riculum has already made possible such an adaptation tt the needs individual pupils as to show that the new course will be of much more general profit than a course that was less elastic in its requirements shall be very pleased to receive from you any criticism favourable or un favourable that you desire to offer of the course as far as you have become acquainted with it in your school i may add that one of the most pleas ant memories of this term was the hours programme put on in the audi torium by miss scott class in con section with the new social studies course in grade rrjt at which i was privileged to be present along with the grades l h iv and v as in vited guests in conclusion i bespeak for my suc cessor in office your support and co operation i venture to suggest that you invite htm to meet you personally oc ally in such close conference and exchange of ideas you may find mutual benefit in the admin utra hon of the affairs of your school as for myself i lay down my responsibility with a sense of having sought at least to be of some assistance to your teachers and to present to vou the needs of the school and suggest ways in which you might best serve highest interests you have my very best wishes for ever increasing success and prosperity faithfully yours j m u special attractions for seven days mens furnishihgs new forsythswrtv a large assortment of uptodate forfued shirts patterns pinstripes small
