by air will be m operation from mon treal to vancouver since march the western section of the transconti nental airways from winnipeg to vancouver has been operating there are now two regular dally nights across the prairies and the rockies with the receipt of planes that have been on order for some time and which are expected shortly the regu lar service will be extended eastward to montreal opening flights across this section have already been made the minister of transport mr howe took part in one of these flights on his way to the west for a tour of in spection of airports equipment and personnel the next step will be put ting the finishing touches on airports lying in eastern quebec and the mari time it is likely that before the end of the year air services will be tabhshed between the atlantic and the pacific mail from halifax will be delivered to vancouver in about hours the recent test flight of the mer- 1 cury was a further step in transat lantic aviation bringing the hour 1 nearer when london mall will be des- i patched regularly by air to canada the time is not distant when mails from the mother country will reach our west coast in about two days in the future this time will probably be considerably shortened the transcanada air line with its ao to 90 equipped airports will be an important link in the british com monwealth and world air routes xt requires no stretch of the imagination to visualize airlines ultimate oper ating from vancouver to the southern pacific dominions and other lines through the northwest territories the yukon and alaska to the orient the northwestern route is the shortest way from northern europe to the orient it will be recalled that the hughes world gridling trip of a couple of weeks ago followed this route from siberia to new york the british air mission it may be some little time before a definite announcement is made of the result of the conversations between the air mission and canadian aircraft manufacturers on the purchase of aircraft for the rjlf in canada the members of the mission have not arrived all together mr f handley page british industrialist having reached this country on ional defence after conversations of members of the mission with mr mackenzie and officials of the nation al defence department who will make available information which the de partment has compiled of facilities in canada for the manufacture of air craft the british visitors will carry on their negotiations with the manufact urers air vice marshal w a bishop distinguished aviator in the great has been one of those welcoming the visitors and aiding in the discus sions it is confidently expected that the visit of the mission will result in the placing of long term contracts of some magnitude with the canadian aircraft industry commander j m robb of the royal air force is also in canada to discuss the question of teaming raf pilots in canada he wul probably visit air training facilities available and if conceded that the plan is feasible all matters relating to the schools and the establishment of the services within the framework of the national defence department will be fully discussed with officials of that department negotiations for the ar rangement will then be carried out through the regular diplomatic chan nels the fixed price for wheat announcement will be made on august 4th after a meeting of the cabinet of the price at which the grain board will purchase wheat from the farmers during the coming crop year with the heavy crops reported from most grain growing countries of the northern hemisphere there is un certainty about future wheat prices canada will have pretty strong com petition during the autumn and early winter months from the united states the danubtan countries and possibly from russia while later argentina and australia will enter the market there are certain factors however favorable to canada in world mar kets there arc the quality and grad ing of this countrys wheat the bulk of the best spring wheat as well as the best hard karvsan winter wheat in the united states is used by do mestic millers the percentage of the higher grades available for ex port is smaller than in canada rus sian wheat is sold by samples and shipments are not so uniform as ship ments from canada how excess of supply compared with import qulreroents is a
