services by the mini ster reported 12377 on hand we listened to a very able and in structive address given by mr a maclaren the speaker began his ad dress by saying he did not altogether approve of the prohlbiuonary methods for which the society stood he be lieved more in dos than hi donta life consisted of affirmations rathex than negations assertion rather than ion some situations however can only be handled by prohibition because we do riot know how to do otherwise human life wants to do if only to break the donts it is the urge to do dangerous thrilling things in doing things that satisfy the na tural desires and happiness really comes from doing something useful and doing it better than someone else does it to feel we are necessary and useful in modern society we and many with weak bodies in strength of character subnormal these qauli- ues often inherited and intemperance is often the cause not many years ago toronto was a city where most people owned their own homes but now we find a house built fpr one family housing four families or more whole families living in one room this is one cause of drunkenness bro ken homes relief rations not twins sufficient to keep whole families to gether and in health russia built many mental hospitals to accommo date the need of her 120000000 peo ple but- when the people were given employment tnatiy of the hospitals were empty our system of education also had 111 effects on life all taking same courses goingthrough the school like meat through a sausage grinder give young people a chance to express themselves bring out their person ality choose and be trained for their chosen vocation we need schools where short courses in all trades can be taken in georgetown we lack a home and school association we lack recreational facilities and room in our school buildings for instruc tion in all the necessary branches of learning women should agitate for buildings that will meet these needs much is being done in camps for re forestation mining fishing road- building and in farms on the- prairies and homeservice projects for girls but we should plan and carry out a porgramme that will give every per son an opportunity to make a living we were then favored by a duet beautifully sung by james and claire bums a vote of thanks was extended to the speaker the singers and the hos tess the meeting closed by all repeating the lords prayer in unison the outside woman fights hard for five years to get into society and then she fights tooth and nail for the next five years to keep all her old friends out
