ing music throughout the services waa provided by the choir of the church assisted by mr stuart maclaren of georgetown and btfen quartette who sang several p1wsnlint numbers ferns and gold chrysanthemums de corated the auditorium beautifully far the occasion many former members of the con gregation and residents of ashgrove came from a distance to worship in the church in which they bad vine wanless brampton mr j h wilson milton mr and mrs stanley gowland milton mr w a wilson georgetown ashgrove church erected in i860 began its career as a methodist new connexion denomination and from the records now obtainable rev james caswell and rev james mcallister with the aid of a group of men messrs thomas crawford joseph ruddell joseph brownrldge and george wrlggleswarth 8r were in strumental to startling the cause in the community rev james mcallis ter was the first minister occupying the pulpit in the years 18606163 then followed reverends thomas goldsmith 186364 william irks 1665 1886 john kay 16676869 william tlndall 187071 george brown 1873 7574 in the latter year the first union of the methodist churches took place and a change was made in the circu bcundarles until this time milton was the head of the circuit ashgrove now became connected with georgetown church and continued in this relationship with the exception of one year 1885 until 1936 one yeu after the final union of the three churches congregational presbyter ian and methodist the ministers during the period 1874 4936 were as follows reverends william mills hugh mclean william morton joseph colling in 1996 ashgrove church became an appointment on the hornby charge and the ministers were rev j wes ley kltcnlng rev john a neill rev benjamin eyre and rev j o totton the church originally a one storey building was built by thomas craw ford one of the first members and it had the high pulpit customary in those days no organ led in the service of song in the first years but the hymns were raised or pitched by one of the singers appointed for that purpose about the year 1882 an organ was purchased and placed in the centre of the church the choir occupying the seats surrounding it miss m brown ridge was the first organist others who served in th am oopacitywex- mrsr wesley held miss maggie hood mrs f w thompson miss ida wtiggleswotth mrs john shanks miss florence ruddell mrs r h wright miss olive ruddell and mrs l arthur ruddell in 1910 the fiftieth anniversary was celebrated with rev w g h mcallister a son of the first minister as the preacher during rev henry caldwell s in cumbeney in 1935 extensive improve ments were made in the building oonsfcting of a new basement sunday school room modem heating and lighting equipment new seating and decorating throughout it is believed that the sunday school i was organised shortly after the found tag of the church and it has been ae tive continuously since that time playing an exceedingly important part m the life of the missionary society mls- befcd lecturer draws large audience an illustrated lecture on birds by stuart thompson wellknown natur alist and bird imitator drew a large and appieclative audience to knoi presbyterian church last friday ev enlng the program was sponsored by the georgetown horticultural society with net proceeds being ear marked for the local branch of the red cross the evening opened with the audi ence singing the stirring therell al ways be an england accompanied at the piano by miss june frank a group of public school children then presen ted two musical numbers followed by miss june frank with an organ solo introducing mr thompson a m neusen president of the horticultural society referred to him as a business man with a hobby and this hobby is bird life mr thompson explained that he is in the printing and advertis ing business and although he is par tlcularly interested in birds he is also a lover of everything pertaining nature and the outofdoors it is most fitting that a bird lover should aodress a horticultural society said mr thompson because people who love flowers cannot help but love birds and the opposite is also true there are three hundred and forty different kinds of birds m the province of ontario alone he pointed out the reasons why bird study is so fascinat ing birds are alive and have per sonahties ranging from the friendly sparrow to the fierce hawk birds have a home life which makes them akin to we humans and they have vol ces which are most interesting to stu dy mr thompson then showed coloured sides of different forms of bird life illustrating these with anecdotes and imitations of bird song a former resident harvey edwin medonald buried here tuesday the funeral rites of the late harvey edwin mcdonald popular proprietor of tilden lake camp north bay were held on tuesday afternoon november 12th from the home of his sister mrs harold cleave georgetown the late mr mcdonald had been in falling health for the last two years was born at ballinafad ontario and spent his early life in alabama later moving to georgetown with his fami ly where he attended high school ret f c cnerend of the united church conducted the service the pallbearers were j j olbbens ray kercher everett cole howard kent geo c greenwood tort interment was made cemetery georgetown he leaves to mourn his loss his wife the former helena stout and three daughters mrs reginald dyer mrs alan brock and mrs george clark also three sisters mrs a c memur- chy huttonville mrs c e ruddy temagaml mrs harold cleave georgetown there were many beautiful floral 79oa birthday last wednesday november 6th at her home m town born torkee england she came to canada when she was ten years old g her home in toronto nine years later she married the late edward colman they first settled in glen williams then moved to georgetown when mr caiman was employed at tfaj greenhouse with the late dr rows he was night watchman at the alli ance paper muts for seven year mrs evening the jtf of the church served supper which was enjoyed by nearly two hundred per sons the program of the evening was presented by the pastor rev g ml holmes and a trio of young people from the wentwprth street baptist church hamilton miss marguerite hodd sang several soprano solos mx john barkers violinist contributed se veral numbers mr jack hodd organ 1st and choir leader in hamilton be sides acting as accompanist sang two solos and joined his sister in a duet rev g m holmes who was ordain ed to the gospel ministry m the george town church in 1915 referred briefly to his pastorate here and brought an encouraging message to the congrega tion the national anthem and bene diction brought the program and 93rd anniversary celebrations to a close the weather after a week of clouds township passed away on tuesday november 5th at the home of his daughter mrs chester burt in hulsburg mr cole who was in his 80th year was a son of the late peter and sarah cole halton county pioneers four brothers william and henry of acton peter sr of georgetown and john and one sister sarah pre deceased him his wife the former esther mcenery passed away in 1806 mr nrtlt wtttt nwrnrr nt t11rnfar1
