past four weeks differs from most cam paigns which fix a definite objective arid end when that objective is reached- the objective of the war savings pledge cam paign has been to enlist an army of war savers who through their continual purchases of certificates dur ing the course of the next few years will help to supply the money wruch is urgently needed for the prosecution of the war everyone should by now be well aware that the costof this war is reaching to a staggering to tal government estimates show expenditures of over 2j2 billion dollars in 194142 half of which are for war purposes this is the largest war appropriation in can adas history and even then the government is not op timistic when it states that war costs are expected to exceed this estimated figure the people of canada are being asked to save ten million dollars a month by purchasing war savings certificates this burden falls not so much on wealthy men on companies and corporations banks and trust funds these can provide ready cash for the govern ment by buying bonds and paying greatlyinc teased in come taxes it is to the man on the street to youand you and you that the government appeals when it asks you to pledge to buy these certificates regularly in the fu ture your money is not being confiscated you are receiving a fair rate of interest and your loan is backed by the greatest backer in the country which is the country itself no the campaign is not over it is just begin- ning and its repercussions will be felt in a steady flow of dollars into the everemptying pockets of a govern ment which is bent on winning a great battle cor free dom so in the months to come remember your pledge and serve by saving march the 4th is the date when the georgetown branch of the red cross- held its annual given generously of their time and skill to red cross work and they are prepared to keep up this work in the futirre money is urgently needed to buy wool and other materials and an initial effort to raise this money will take the form of an ice carnival a the are na next tuesday march 4th it has been decided to keep the carnival purely local visiting ice stars which perhaps make a better carnival as far m their endowments and aptitude would enable them prof itably to go take upon themselves a grave responsibility fortunately for their own peace of mind they are of ten those who were similarly deprived of educational opportunities in their youth and who therefore do not real ize what they themselves missed and what their children will miss some of them however azenewspapex rea den and we make this suggestion to them that to be without a high school education is a greater disadvantage today than it was 30 30 or 40 years ago for the present we are at war and there la an opening for every body but even for the army education is an advantage and for the much sought after pilots job education is essential 3ut we will not always be at wax probably we will get back in time to the difficult economy of plenty when men compete with each other for the chance to do the little work that is to be done thenras during the past few years education may mean the diff erence between employment and the breadline a high school education is just as important for a girl we think as for a boy for while a girl may not herself be the breadwinner of her family she usually marries a man whose education is not greatly different from her own education doesnt end with school it begins there and if the boy or girl has been fortunate in his or her tea chers he or she goes on through life learning inquiring reading thinking developing a richer personality and a more capable personality for most of us it takes all the schooling we can get to enable us to take over successfully the direction of our own education if it is a responsibility to discourage our children from finishing their high school education and there are peo ple doing it it is a privilege to urge them on to get every possible drop of formal education that they can high school certainly and university if at all possible it is difficult to finance a university education and ye it is just from those homes that have difficulty that our country and our world need new leaders armed with a knowledge of the difficulties and problems of work aday people and equipped for the fray with an education no whit inferior to that of the representatives of an easier bill tub hobo broadcast from button woe by gabriel beatter ladles and oeouemen maybe there is a dog at your house who is holding his bead up tonight with full operation at any given time is about 9000 according to au- thprittv estimates it is unlikely 1 germany would be able to esses 9000 aeroplanes for her opening as sault on britain estimates which place german air strength as high as 70000 or 80000 fighting types are dismissed as non- jcooke cement and cinder blocks brick and tile mantjpaottncd any quantity st phone ttf btjbltnoton the air correspondent of the lon don sunday times in an analysis of german air strength points out that germany has seven regular air fleets to these must be added the naval air aervtoes operating separately and an operational training division which to gether constitute total first line strength of the luftwaffe these formations have a first line strength including first line reserves of 24000 with an operational strength of 12000 available at any moment behind lie reserve pool and unfin ished machines amounting to approxi mately 60 per oent as well as some 5000 trainers and communication air craft this brings the grand total of all german aircraft to about 40000 the estimate is incomplete however without mention of production losses records show rjlf have scored nearly 000 confirmed victories over german aeroplanes in all engagements stnoe the war began experience suggests as a reasonable estimate that for every machine lost in combat two were put out of service by accidents and unre corded victories this does not in clude training losses usually estimated at is per cent per month thus total losses of the luftwaffe since war began counting norwegian dutch belgian preach and
