the canadian red cross headquarters in london england received here recently calls for unlimited quantities of blankets quilts and relief clothing at once further shipments of socks sweaters scarves helmets gloves mitts pyjamas bed jackets dressing gowns t bandages and wash cloths will be urgently needed we have already disposed of 1211657 articles since the first of the year all the available supplies for which there was a demand the cable concluded by a later cable a requisition came for half million surgical dressi these figures illustrate the urgency of britain s desperate need already more articles have been distributed in the first three months of this year than in the whole of 1640 unceasing air raids have created staggering demands for relief and if the spring brings greater military activity the demands will be still further increased what does this urgent appeal mean to us as individuals it means that each of us must double the amount of work we have done in the past it means too that those who for one reason or another nave sought themselves too busy to do red cross work must find somehow the time to knit or sew or make surgical dressings it must not be saw of olivet and love its galilee j q whlttler the acts of jens 1 sl luke wrote his gospel to tell his friend thsopbllus of all that jesus began both to do and teach he wrote his second book the acts of the apostles as a sequel to his first in effect it is what jesus con unued to do and to teach through his apostles what a contrast between the amall beginnings that luke knew and the achievements of which church history tells us luke knew only of a few thousand christians at most in a small corner of the world we know that one third of the people now alive may in some sense be called chris tian luke wrote two books to form a friend these books now in the new testament have been circulated in the bible to the number of five nun died and twenty million copies in the past one hundred and thirty five years christ taught publicly for three years and he is now teaching the whole world through literature the church and the example or christians and christ s work on earth is only well begun transformed men e 3 instead of this long view of the centuries let us now look at the sud den tiansformation of a group of eleven men at the time of the ar rest and trial of jesus these fol lowers of christ had yielded to panic and cowardice but that was not the end of the story christ was not through with them yet he had train ed them for perhaps two dosen mon ths and returned to them to com plete their training he shewed him self to them gave them directions and spoke to them of the things per tainlng to the kingdom of god these taansformatlons in attitude are still happening a broadcast from an air raid shelter in the heart of bombed london tells of timid women losing fear of rough men becoming gentle of cynical persons discovering reality in prayer conditions for religious ex perience could hardly be less favour able but the speaker quoted with god all things are posawjae by means of the contagious spirit of christians one may learn from snoth er the secret of victorious living through faith in god a rrssatss eeealfcw 4 5 there are stages in christian ex perience think for instance of the people who went out to the jordan volley tobe baptised by john the baptist what happened there was real religion john txdly baptised with water he led people to repentance they were sensitised morally but it was elementary conscience education christ promised something better and it came at pentecost the coming of the holy spirit meant more than i and forgi it brought power and high purpose it gave coin age and conviction men who had been lonewolfing learned to work to gether the dlaflnles became a s group of men of whom it was said that they turned the world uj down how did it happen they waited upon god in prayer and with faith instead of settiajcout in their own strength they depe upon god this new experience of gods presence came because christ helng assembled together with them had told them what to do john the baptist truly baptised with water but christ rave a baptism of the holy spirit that could only be likened to lire keeeivtng power 6 8 the disciples asked the risen christ for a blue print of the future what would be the fate of the hebrew na tion would they be freed from the roman yoke even yet the apostles were thinking politically jesus told them that they would have to walk by faith not by sight that bagger things were afoot than a national re volution or imperial overthrow they were to receive power to be witnesses to christ both in jerusalem and in all judaea and in samaria and to the uttermost part of the earth christ told the men who had been thinking of earthly thrones that their vocation was to be missionaries for this high carrolls i ajfafeta qawtmlo apricots 2 apple juice aiwcarw x i cream tea sandwiches 16c
