department of agriculture all of whom are in close touch with the general farming situation in their respective counties are expressing the hope that owners of tractors wifi aid their horse power neighbors to pre pare their land for spring crops this would be one excellent way to meet the undoubted farm labor shortage in ontario this year they state in discussing the matter one agri cultural representative pointed out that there were a number of farm tractors in his county which ordinarily were not worked to anything like full capacity the owners hustled through their work by tractors while over the fences their neighbors were doing an equally good but slower job with horse teams its really a shame he said to see these tractors idle when they could be doing a really good job on a neigh boring farm in speeding up wartime production if farmers who own tractors could work out a plan whereby these machines would be kept going for longer hours or for a greater num ber of days either on the home farm or neighboring farms there would be a much better chance of getting land for crops worked at the proper time with a consequent increase in produc tion no person would suggest that a tractor owner neglect his own field but i would appeal to him to look round his neighborhood and go to the aid of the man who may have lost his hired man to a munition factory and help him get bis crops planted nosrbif ims yfauts wool cup seqcired for war purposes it will soon be sheep shearing time in canada as a large percentage of the 1941 canadian wool clip wlu be used in war contracts it is important that canadian wool be handled and marketed to best advantage says a a m production service dominion department of agriculture all wool sold commercially will be graded according to the canadian wool standards and in this way each grade will be used for the purpose tor which it is best suited as canadian wool of itself is equal to any pro duced elsewhere the following sugges tions may be of value to canadian sheep raisers at this season of the year 1 at lambing time avoid dropping btraw and chaff on the ewes backs while in the small lambing pens 2 avoid allowing ewes to get dirty in wet muddy yards or pens 3 during the spring breakup keep pens as dry as possible provide drainage from pens and yards 4 prepare for shearing by making sure that the ewes can be penned in a clean place free from chaff and seeds 5 a clean shearing platform is es sential 6 ewes that are tagged at this sea son of the year are less likely to become dirty later on 7 make arrangements for a supply of paper twine and wool sacks so that the fleeces can be properly rolled and tied at shearing tune and the- wool well stored until sold the 141 clip of fleece wool should make a valuable contribution to canadas war effort and it is import ant that each fleece be kept clean free from straw seeds chaff burrs and tags and that it be marketed in good condition for grading and sale to canadian mills that can use it to best advantage two war time series pamphlets care of the fleece no 17 and canadian fleece wool no 18 may be obtained by writing publicity and extension division dominion depart ment of agriculture ottawa farmers should plan to help each other should work on tbe system that the lord help these whs help each other there is an old saying that the lord helps those who help themsel ves and it would be equally true to say that the lord helps those who help each other many ontario far mers will literally have to help each other this year if they cannot get sufficient help for their own individual farms there will be from all accounts a number of oneman farms this year with a consequent reduction hi crop acres as a result of the farm help situation unless farmers cooperate in the oldfashioned neighborly manner of changing works with each other it will be recalled that during severe farm labor shortgages in the last war neighbors worked back and forth helping each other with seeding and harvest operations a return to this method of operation will mean that farmers will beableto plant and harvest more crop acres and feed more hogs and cattle than the would by attempting to run the farm alone hundreds of ducks signal for meeting a little story perhaps commonplace in itself but revealing one feature of the- remarkable progress achieved in the drought areas of the prairie pro vinces comes from saskatchewan o freer superintendent of the lands utilization branch prairie farm re- hajburtatlon board hod occasion to call on the superintendent of one of the community pastures made up of submarglnal lands which are not suit able for grain growing the pasture superintendent was not at home he was busy in another part of the 30- 000acre pasture under his charge gaung in his quandry at the pl vista of rolling pastures mr freer wondered what he could do to com municate with the pasture superinten dent for the matter was important when the murmur of multitudes of ducks in a stock watering dam some distance away attracted his attention in the olden days pioneers and in dians signalled by smoke why not signal by ducks was mr freers thought he approached the water and the ducks rose in their hundreds wheeling in everincreasing circles aiway off the pasture superinten dent knowing that something was amiss started post haste for the lake to investigate particularly because the postures are game preserves and bird sanctuaries thus the two officials met and the important matter which mr freer had called to discuss was soon settled r a few y ago in that distric such an incident would nave bwn impossible before the initiation of the prairie farm rehabilitation act the district in question was in the midst of a birdlcss waterless and badly soildrifted area now in the growing seasons due to the work of rehabilitation extensive areas of grass are grown upon which hun dreds of head of livestock are sup ported there are several epic stories in the work that has been done un der the prairie farm rehabilitation act of which that connected with the community pastures is among the most romantic manganese
