call it the xtity of con trast where the east meets the west i didnt properly get around but may at some later time cairo made me think of toronto wide clean streets with street cars and pro per size cars driving on the proper side of the street and large modern buildings i have seen the pyramids am en closing a picture of myself with them for a background proof also am sending a chip off them we go into suez occasionally a dirty little town the canal is as wide as a big river we swam in it today and some of the boys tried to fish but the fish had different ideas also i had a ride on a camel there was a soldier egyptian doing sentry on a camel along the canal we raced up the bank and took pictures of him and then he got off and let us on the camel got down in its knees and george tried to jump on like you would a horse but the camel was not used to those tactics and at the first touch he jumped up and oeorge fell off and almost rolled into the canal i never laughed so much in my life i believe the camel enjoyed it too well we finally both bad a crack at it and its quite an experience you feel awfully nigh up and he alts down or gets up by a sequence of alternately slanting positions that are most dis concerting coming back we crossed a subcanal by a halfsubmerged raft pulled across by a chain with a native on the end two days ago we bad a terrific sand storm a very miserable experience the sand is a sort of gritty silt not like the clean sand of our lakes and it nets in yo eye and a your throat you cant see anything at all in a way its like a blizzard we wear tropical kit in the daytime here and blue at night during the day its like a hot summer day at home only without any shadetrees and at night it gets away down be low zero in temperature pve spent some time in the desert proper and out there the days and nights are pretty terrible theres quite a cold wind blowing this morning feels like sep tember on lake huron but by noon it will be scorching hot we sleep with mosquitonetting around our beds now j didnt one night and got rather badly bitten i always was a target for mosquitoes r that summer at hfflsboro a lot of the boys here im with my old gang again have got all sorts of italian stuff they picked up around sldt barani after we took it over one of them brought back a motorcycle i havent learned to speak arabic yet but know a few words saheeda means goodday or almost anything all the servants are egyptian or 8u- deneae and you call them 1earers instead of txttmen the sudanese continued on page 8 swimmers are warned not to leave valuables in their clothing while swim ming this summer afatne kemshead swimming at glen williams this week lost a wallet containing his drivers license registration card and a sum of money anyone finding this should
