machines fob work a meeting of the georgetown red cross society was held in the public library at 800 pin on monday even ing president leroy dale was in the chair the aluminum salvage campaign which will be held on friday and saturday september 5th and 6th was discussed and mr dale george al- cott and walter btehn were appointed committee to berlh charge of the school teachers in town and district will be asked to instruct their pupils to bring discarded aluminum utensils belonging to their parents and neigh bours to the schools on september 5th and the display window at the herald office has been made available for the two days when aluminum donations win be placed in it the campaign which was planned by the department at national war services to provide aluminum vitally needed for war production has been put in charge of the red cross so ciety while the campaign has for its chiet purpose the obtaining of this metal any profits accruing will go to the red cross so that it really is playing a dual role of providing metal lor production and funds for red cross work it is also pointed out that only waste aluminum is wanted and articles used every day in the home should not be donated purchase of sewing machines another matter which came up for discussion at the meeting was the pur chase of some new sewing machines for the red cross rooms in the post office some of the machines at present in the rooms are out of com mission and it is doubtful if they can be put in working order mrs w j peck mrs p p blackburn and mr dale were named as a conunjttee to arrange for the repairing of machines and the purchase of new ones to re place those discarded it is anticipat ed that at least three new machines and possibly five wlh have to be pur chased henry sherman died last wednesday this community was shocked at the sudden passing of henry l sherman on wednesday august 20th born in georgetown of a pioneer family six tynine years ago he wasmhe third son of the late henry and jane peck sherman he received his education in the public and high schools here after leaving school as a young man he was employed by the late william mcleod co afterwards by john mcbean co many of the older generation will remember him when he and the late william mckay had a photograph studio on main street later he went into the mens furnish ing business with stores in george town and acton however his chief interest was always in photography and for thirty years he had a studio in milton three years ago he dis posed of his business in milton and returned to make his home here he was a member of the congregational church and a conservative in politics mr sherman was twice married his first wife was may tost georgetown who along with their baby son passed away in 1902 1912 he married lucy homan of grimsby who survives him he is also survived by three sisters mrs william whyte jane and mrs r r gardiner nellie of georgetown and mrs d a scott vina of or- angeville two brothers will of st paul minn and george of pes moines io died in 1895 and 1896 in tribute to the late mr sherman many friends spoke of his kindliness of disposition and fine sense of humor the much news here and papers of any kind are hard to get i have seen quite a bit ot england already as i have had five days leave while in nottingham thy had an air raid warning but all the people do here is roll over and go back to sleep on my next eave wnich is not for three months i am going to see london as i guess every body would want to see that city if you are talking to anybody over hre about the war they all say that it will be over by christmas so you can see what they think of hitler as for the part of the country we are in ngn now it is very much like ontario the first week we
