third fair since the be ginning of the war and reverting to the old saturday date georgetown fair broke attendance records for the past ten yers and almost doubled gate receipts of last year when well over 1600 people supported the b5th consecutive esquesing agricultural so- dtys fall fair while it is still doubtful whether the prize money can be paid in full due to a small deficit being carried over tor the past two years the direc toro considered the gate receipts and lair as a whole highly satisfactory and appreciated the efforts of all those who in any way helped to keep this time honored institution on a par with the best fairs hi the district the fair was favored with ideal weather conditions both on friday and saturday the sun shone during the entire day and many former ceorgetownites availed themselves of the wonderful weather conditions to renew acquaintances at georgetown fall fair and one elderly lady was heard to remark that she had attended the fair here 50 jears ago exhibits good on the ft hole exhibits were as good if not better than in previous years the hall while not as full as in years gone by looked lovely with the dls play of ladles work home made bak lng fruit flowers and vegetables one of the best displays in the hall was that of the children of georgetown public school many favourable com ments were passed on their work and the boys and girls are to be compli mented as well as the staff at the school for we believe principal wrig glesworth takes a keen interest in the lall fair display bj the pupils excellent displays of work being done for the red cross society were shown by verdun bebekah lodge branches in the district of the wo men s institute and the red cross so cleby itself another booth drew at tention to the purchase of wax sav ings stamps and certificates the display of dressed fowl in the hall was consplcious by its absence something that has not occurred in a good many years the horticultural society prizes lor the best bird house made by boy or girl brought out a number of exhi bitors with winners being as follows lat doreen mclholland 2nd clifford norton 3rd violet barnes 4th ted ooknan it was disappointing that only one little girl entered for the best decorat ed doll carriage excellent prizes were offered in this secttom with june lerch being ae lucky little girl the showing of light and heavy horses was good while the cattle ex hibit was particularly fine the t eaton co special for hogs brought out a large class and sheep were on ex hibit in their usual good numbers the poultry show was not quite as large as last year but the quality of stock shown could not be surpassed at any fair leading exhibitors were unset farms georgetown just re turned from winning many prizes at the one w j alexander ashgrove w h mclaren erin excellent races the harness racing provided some thrilling moments for the large crowd assembled on and in front of the grandstand with close finishes in all races in the 220 class the results were 1st rosatoelle lee owned by coliton toronto 2nd dy peters owned by jacob walters allenstein 3rd kaye han ester owned by jim mcdowell toronto in the 2 26 cliss st patrick owned by wm lawson oranges 111c finished 1st bruce henle owned bj ken thompson drayton 2nd and t he other two horses tied perc lee own ed by w mcdonnell hamilton and betty gratton owned b charles o learj tottenham bill morris of brampton won the running race with victor queen with alkadeena and safetv first owned by dr bovalrd and d campbell also of brampton finishing second and third respect vel the potato race also held in front of the grandstand was as exciting as usual and produced the following win ners howard laidlaw bramp on jean gowland brampton the only lady entrant war effort were won by girls first teresa curtis 2nd marjorie hernngton boy a 1st douglas peck the stock judging competition for bojs under 21 produced the following winners ward brownridge r r i georgetown 1st harold brown r r 4 acton 2nd angus mcnabb and ro bert alexander both ol r r 2 georgetown were tied for third place there were eight boys in the contest this vears midway was a much im proved entertainment for both jomg ind old the ferris wheel merrv go ound and a ito ride held the attei tion of the children while the varou games and shows provided a diver ion for the grown ups a detac iment of military officer st john brigade parade to anglican church he first church parade of the georgetown branch of the st john brigade was held to st georges church of england on sunday mem bers from the georgetown division along with those from toronto cen tral west toronto and westminster divisions formed at the legion hall with col g b s cousens as maxshali of the parade and marched to the- church the music being furnished by the georgetown pipe band the divisional surgeon dr c v williams and capt williams of the toronto corps st john ambulance brigade took the salute and with them were mrs mccutcheon district superintendent mrs douglas corps superintendent and mayor joseph gibbons rev woo thompson rector of st georges church led in a very fine sen ice of re consecration and read the special prajers of the st john ambulance brigade following the service the george town division entertained the visitors at lunch among those present were divisional superintendents mrs t f grieve and miss williams first offl cer miss foss and second officer mrb red pa th mary feller weds herald editor ceremony took place at si georges church last thursday st georges church or england was the scene of a lovely wedding last thursday at 4 pjri when mary holley elder daughter of mr and mrs a h feller was united in marriage with walter charles younger son of dr and mrs c e biehn of windsor on tario rv w g o thompson per formed the ceremony the church was beautifullydecorated with multt colored gladioli v the bride who was given in marri age by her father wore a white sathi wedding gown with finger tip veil and white accessories her bouquet was of white roses and bouvardia her sioter floria was maid of honour wearing orchid corded taffeta with deep orchid hat and accessories and carrying a bouquet of gladioli gwen dolyn and kathleen lake of lang staffe twin cousins of the bride were junior bridesmaids they were dress ed alike in primrose taffeta with bou quets for the active arm another interesting feature of the daj was the ceremony for the lower ing of the flag held bj a company ol lome scous before the armouries at the close of the afternoon lieut h c mcclure acting o c w as in charge music throughout the afternoon was provided by the lome scots band of georgetown their fine program was much appreciated bj fair goers the amplified public address system on the grounds was the best yet with all races and judging events being clearly announced by russ crelghton the fair dance on fridaj evening a dance was held in the arena and being an annual af lair drew a crowd of over 300 dancers rujs creighton and his band provided the music for both new and old time dancing it was judged a grand sue cess and it was russ creighton s third engagement in as given in marriage hy her father wore a suit of blue alaskan pall mall crepe with a hat and shoul der veil of the same material and black accessories she wore a corsage of better time roses and was attend ed by her sister mrs fred harrison dressed in dusky rose crepe with brown accessoile and a corsage of johanna hill roses the groomsman was her bcrt arnold brother of the groom a reception was detachment left military district no 2 last week to attend all fairs in the southern part of onta io on saturday a recruiting base was set up at georgetown fair in the hope of en listing men tor the active services captain g a hanuly of toronto scottish and lieut w e milner of the argjjc and southern hirhlanders hamilton were in chaige with sgt major dymond speaking over the pub he nddress sytsem actual signing or recruits did not ike place on the grounds but those volunteering were referred to recruit i a depot 61 albert st toronto sgt major dymond recently returned from eneiand and was able to give first hand information regarding the war situation on the continent halton garage operators association held opening meeting following a brier holiday period the halton branch of the ontario garage operators association held their first meeting for the 1941 42 season in mil ton on thursday evening sept nth with the president mr j l mcklnd ley in the chair a large number of members turned out and took a keen interest in the programme and the enthusiasm shown gave the members plenty of op timlsm regarding lhe future life of the branch a verj large number of business items came before the meeting for discussion and in particular the many new regulations affecting the garage business provided the members with much food for thought the members were greatly favoured with a visitor in the person of mr e j wadham editor of the garage operator who is always a welcome guest in halton county mr wad liam spoke briefly and introduced mr j a reid the new field man for the association who gave the members a very interesting and instructive ad dress based on the principle of doing and carrying on good clean business and stressed the necessity of maintain lng honourable practices at the conclusion of the meeting the members enjoyed a social half hour which brought another successful meeting to a close red cross branch gets all proceeds from collection in this area citizens of the georgetown district cooperated to make the aluminum drive a success in this district and s good supply or the metal is ready for snlpment to the central warehouse in guelph the collection was smaller than it might have been owing to the fact that a simllarrdrlve was under taken last year by the countess of strathmore chapter iodjh which fairly well cleaned up all supplies of old aluminum in the district however it was surprising how many old aluminum utensils were still avail able and the herald window was fill ed with a good assortment of pots and pans kettles coffee percolators ther mos bottles skates and such articles as curling tongs soap dishes and alum inum wire several people mentioned to the editor what a fine kitchen shower had been given by the town but we hasten to explain that dona- tors took it literally when the govern ment advised them to give only dis carded aluminum utensils a fid there was little that could be put to use in the new home the georgetown lions club co oper ated with the red cross in the cam paign and donated articles collected by tl em in their own continuous sal vage for victory drive there wsa also good results from the appeal which president leroy dale addressed to dis ret school teachers to have their pupils bring aluminum articles to school and the main part of the collection was compe ed in this way 1 e dr ve was planned to relieve urday for mary florence sutherland widow of the late charles sutherland who died suddenly at her home in ac ton on wednesday september 10th she was born sixtyfive years ago on the 2nd line chlnguacousy and was a daughter of the late james and mary jane norton her husband pre deceased her ave years ago she had lived most of her life in glen williams and district surviving are two daughters mrs jack crichton and mrs harold plues both of acton two sisters mrs r marchment of georgetown and mrs dennis tracy glen williams three brothers james and fred norton of the glen and alan of llmehouse and four grandchildren following services at the home in acton a short service was held at the graveside in glen williams cemetery where interment was made pall bearers were six nephews
