the herald these past few weeks when the wee sma hours were nearing and still no sounds of presses rolling in the shop chances are that there will be a few more late editions this fall as you know besides turning ou a weekly newspaper the herald does a good amount of commercial printing and at present we have orders on hand which are going to take a good deal of time to fulfill to us our commercial printing is of equal im portance with the newspaper asavery necessary source of revenue without a thriving printing business no weekly newspaper can exist so whenhe herald is late now and then on wednesday nighwe hope our readers will realize that we are doing 3glc both our jobs well to gie our printing custorf5rs first class workmanship and to give ou a paper you will enjov readings a great fall fair we were sorry to miss the tall tair this year from all reports u was a standout in the nmetvfive years of fairs sponsored by the esquesing agricultural society and we have yet to meet anyone who was there who didnt report a good time it is gratifying to know that the a tendance figure was almost double that of last year and we know that the directors will al ready be optimistically viewing prospects for a bigger and better event next year we have a few criticisms to make which we feel will htip to make the a2 fair a better one first of all we believe it is important that the prize list be out at an earlier date than it has for the past two years it would be better to have this in the hands of the public a good month before the fair and certainly not less than three weeks in advance a certain amount of time is necessary for exhibitors to get their displays ready and we are confident that more work would be shown particularly in the womens section if the prize list were out well in advance of fair day another point where the fair could be improv ed is in a careful revision of the prize list especiallv regarding the baking and sewing sections we think a groups the lady directors should have a few meetings ths fall and give this part of the list a thorough house- cleaning we were pleased to see a few new items in this years showprizes for model aeroplanes and for essays on georgetowns war effort if the directors would draw up a list containing a number of things like this and show it to prospective donators of prizes we think that the fair could be made much more interesting these are just a few random thoughts which come to us today as we write this column readers are reminded that the fair board welcomes any sug- gestionssr improving the fair in with ideas from the public that will show that they are interested and encourage the directors in their efforts to give you a good fair next year g advertising we are pleased to note that more advertisers are taking advantage this month of the herald as an adver tising medium and we trust that the results are justify ing the expenditure there is one sure way to encourage people to buy in georgetown and that is to tell them what you have for sale every week some 800 heralds go out to subscribers in this district who are waiting to read the news and to see what merchants are offering in their ads if you are an adcrtiser keep it up it wi pay you dividends as you already have learned if you havent used the herald to advertise your products try a few ads and see if you dont get results and remem ber that the results are an increased number of cus tomers in your store an advertisement can draw cus tomers into your place of business but after that the rest is up to you keep your stores neat and attractive and your merchandise clean and uptodate these the soldiers comports fund in the excitement of a busy week we neglected to start off our soldiers comforts fund last week with a donation from the herald this week the fimd is formally opened with a two dollar bill from this office in the hope that this will multiply many times in the months to come it isnt very much this two dollars just four br five cigarettes apiece for the i 20 lads from georgetown and district who are serving overseas with canadas armed forces but from all reports four or five cigarettes mean a great
