and that no one is forgotten the weather by h l hutt now that october days are past we can sum up the dally records and note wherein the month has differed from the average of many octobers we and the mean daily maximum temper atures has been exactly the normal 56 7 while the mean dally minimum has been 40 7 or 3 5 degrees above normal in other words we have had unusually mild nights with but very little frost there has been consider ably more rain than usual nearly 4 inches wiich is nearly 15 inches over the normal rainfall for the month this was needed to help make up for the shortage all summer the first week of november has started with a rainfall of oor an inch 1 06 so we may yet get our normal rainfall for the year to fill up dry well and re plenlsh water supply y although frosts are holding off well there was another drop of 5 degrees in the average temperature last week below that of the week before following are the local records for the week inesday evening november 5th 1941 5c a copy 2 00 a year lions club help war weapons drive will complete certificate for every pupil in district schoohvplan an noal christmas tree tor december 20th the georgetown felons club held their regular meeting on monday evening when they entertained their wives at dinner at the united church the club members afterwards ad journed to the office of the oeorge town lumber company where the meeting was held the chief item of business was a plan to assist in the war weapons drive by helping public school pupils in this district to complete their books of stamps necessary to buy certificates it was decided to place the final stamp in the book completed by each pupil in the district only one stamp however being allowed per pupil fois this purpose a grant of 100 00 made the money to be taken from ihe salvage for victory fund which was started a few months ago a donation of 10 00 was made the poppy fund and a 2 00 donation to the red cross for the purchase of a blanket in their current drive for these 5 00 was given to the hal lowe en committee which sponsored the community haljowe en party in the town hall last week plans were prepared tor the annual lions christmas tree which will be held this year on saturday afternoon december 20th the lome scots band have been invited to be present ttjlons t elson and c burnside are in charge of ticket sales on the lucky draw funds like topsy the b w v and soldiers comforts funds sponsored by the herald continue to grow and grow the war victims fund inaugurated last february received a donation of 3715 last week from a lucky draw operated by the tennant family on a lome scots cushion donated by towo sons ptea b j and w e tennant now overseas with the lome scots joan latimer holding ticket number 482 won the draw which was made by june hill of newmarket the recentlyopened soldiers com forts fund grew to 151 53 when a donation of 8j07 was received from the sunday school pupils at st oeorge s church of england from their children s day collection lucky draw tickets are now being sold on an electric broiler which brihs dept store has donated with proceeds to go to the b w v fund the broiler will be on display in thel herald window this week and tickets may tie obtained at the office the draw will be made on nov 29th the georgetown herald british war victims fund popwarded to toronto bvening herald dear sir through the medium of your paper the members of the lome scots band would like to express their thanks to all those whose assistance made the hallowe en frolic such a success although the idea originated in the band it would have been impossible to carry it out without the help of the legion the lions chib the fire men and all those citizens who gave so freely of their time to put scots band accidental shooting bereaves local visitor tragic word of the shooting by a playmate of her 12 year old son don aid was received here saturday by mrs garnet clltheroe of grafton mrs olitheroe with her daughter marilyn had just arrived on friday to spend a few days with her sister mrs s p chapman according to the story told to provincial constable d adair of cobourg young clltheroe had just got off his wheel where a group of his chums were standing one or them who had been out shoot ing levelled his 33 rifle at him and playfully called stick em up to his horror the rifle cracked and the clltheroe boy slumped to the ground with a bullet wound through his heart with robert olitheroe 11 brother of donald the youth ran for help but whn dr g w peacock arrived at the scene donald was dead an inquest will be held this week the funeral on tuesday was at tended by hundreds of friends from the district who shared with the grief stricken family their sorrow in the loss welcomed the large audience and introduced the guest speaker rev dr archer wal lace secretary of the department of education united church of canada who gave ah interesting illustrated lecture on britain today dr wal lace ls not only an outstanding lee t rtr but his fine sense of humour which seemed to have no bounds en deared him to jie gathering he first howrea beautiful coloured slides ol some of the most picturesque and his toric spots in england scenes that wtre taken when he visited england in 1938 then he moved on to scot land with scenes from edinburgh loch lomond the birth places of b rns and scott climaxing a lovely trip in pictures through england and scotland dr wallace took his audi e ice back to england with 25 colour ed slides of the bombed out areas especially the city of london with its westminster abbey and st pauls cathedral one or the most remark able statements made by the speaker was that during the blitz in england 20 000 children were separated from their parents who would never again find their kin it is statements like this that make canadians stop and realize that there is a war on in eng land mrs francis thompson rendered a very pleasing solo after issue and saw the birth notice of bis daughter jean viola pte ilarley the third member of the trio spent some time at camp borden with the 48th highlanders until he rejoined his local regi njent when they left for overseas hls brother gordon went over seas with the same outfit a request by acting night con stable r marchment for a salary in crease brought on a discussion aboift salary increases in general for muni cipal employees at last evenings regu lar meeting of georgetown council mr marchment appeared before the ouncll to ask consideration for a raise from his present salary of 65 00 a month councillor s c macken zie expressed himself in favour of granting a general increase to all municipal employees based on the cost of lving bonus which the government is introducing this month evm though municipalities are ex empt from this said councillor mac kenzie i think we should fall in una with businesses which are affected by 1 and give the town employees the same benefits mayor gibbons said that he was not in favour of granting any salary in crease this year the matter was left in abeyance till the december meeting by which time the council will have had the oppor tunity of reviewing the new legisla tion and coming to some decision on the matter auditing technicality a letter was read from the firm of jenkins hardy who have been ap pointed to conduct theaudft for 141 this explain that new regulations issued by the department of munici pal affairs made lt obligatory for an individual rather than a firm to be appointed as a municipal auditor at their suggestion mr h evening november 24th at s pm to hear appeals against the 1942 abfaesssment grants a grant of 25 00 was made to the canadian legion poppy fund and a grant of 12 65 to the committee which planned the rev c c cochrane of knox presbyterian church and after this will come the placing of wreaths and the hymn o god our help in ages past rev r c todd of georgetown united church will lead in prayer and rev j e ostrom of georgetown baptist church will deliver a short h harlow secretary of branch 120 canadian legion will read the hono roll containing the names of twenty- four men who died on active
