photo grapher spent an afternoon in the district taking photo graphs and gathering ma terlal for an article which ap peared in the telegram last thursday november 13 here are some of the pictures which he took that day top left the editor poses at his desk in the herald office to the right are four members of the mcnabb st neighbourhood club which has been a strong supporter r the fund the ladies meet weekly for a social evening of sewing knitting and chatting its a club rule that no lunch is served and each member contributes a quarter those who can t attend usually send their quarter along and with the donation of s13j0 ack nowledged this week the club has contributed 100 00 to date in the picture are mrs 8 eason mrs alex keao mrs- george martin and mrs w greensward bottom left atlantic in a refugee ship this u the first in a series of j articles about conditions in great britain and other part of europe i written exclusively for the weekly newspapers of canada by hugh october 1941 iter more than two years of war and when you come to thins of it what a strange place for anyone to be unless ariveu by dire necessity most of the other 140 people on board the ujs steamship excaroblon are here because of necessity they are fleeing from unhappy buiope glad enough to get away in sphe of perils that may still he ahead they are refugees hoping for peace in the united states the passenger list contains the name of a prince related to one of the still ruling royal fami lies of europe there are such names as gomez y gomez and pastuhov and pin tsao and radajewskl there is a group of wholesome young people who have left the ujs embassy in berlin while the going is good and several chinese families including some cute utue children being withdrawn from the embassy in switzerland there is a man from the british diplomatic service occupying a cabin all to him self because he carries confidential m formation to washington and there is a lieutenant in the ufl navy in civilian clothes returning from a mil ston to britain there are two eng hsh women forced to leave prance on 24 hours notice they have not test ed meat for two years because they fed their entire ration such as it was to a siamese cat that now ac companies them on the ship there is a little french girl who ordered two poached eggs for breakfast her first morning on the boat and then could not eat them when they came but sat and cried salt tears over them because her appetite was gone and another famuy from unoccupied france ate nothing- but potatoes fo their first few meals there is even a stately english woman who crawled out under barbed wire entanglements to get to portugal and so on this ship m such a crowd as tills eleven oontlliued on page 7 sh dion t care ton district men overseas will receive parcels from georgetown it was a busy week for the soldiers comforts committee last week when 144 christmas boxes for district sol diers ann airforcemen serving over seas and one nursing sister were ship ped by the committee aided by a number of willing helpers he com mittee was busy all day wednesday packing and addressing the boxes each soldiers box conta ned a pair of socks packet of razor blades tin of meat spread piece of cake cheese tea bags sugar and a christmas card the committee is appreciative of he help rendered by the ladies who help ed with the packing and la th pri vate donations received as well as to the promoters- of the upto you sale which helped materially in sending jie boxes the soldiers comforts committee formed over a year ago
